does sinking a ship in port accomplish anything?

Yeah you can sink them where they are moored.

You gain damage vs object points, and Hit% vs object when in attack, bomber, or vehicle modes (Hit% only in a PT boat with rockets or torpedo).  It has no practical effect on gameplay though.

so its a score hore thing? was wondering if it did anything to score, not thatd i use it anytime soon

and strangely you can sink them even if you own the port :huh
(the cranes are destructible too)

There are far better targets to go after if you're hoping to improve your score.
