Used to be a time I really enjoyed the H.C. most everything they had on. Here the past
(?? couldnt even tell you), its really been poor programming for the most part. Never really
had to pick through it before, especially while back when there was at least "Mail-Call",
"Dogfights", "Enterprise 360" and a multitude of other war-history programs.
Everybody has to just get on the "Reality" band wagon and I never thought H.C.
would ever do that. Now its "Ice Road Truckers" over and over,(just in case you
didnt get enough of it the 3rd and 4th time through!), and several others Im not
even going to waste my time saying. Any other fans besides myself been just
a little disgruntled about this?...and dont get me started on "Gangland"! :furious
-
Completely agree...wtf Ice Road Truckers has to do with history is beyond me.
Discovery Channel has become more interesting than History Channel.
-
It's economics....Reality programs are cheaper to produce.
-
Yeah. I agree!!!
Hardly watch anymore, too many inaccuracies,
or total BS revisionist history on now...
Those mega BS shows like, UFO hunters, Monsterquest,
Ice road truckers, Sand hogs, Axe men, are just the
outward signs of the propaganda machine at work
behind the scenes...
Then on sunday morn, they have a show that
spews liberal political garbage from Neil Gabler..
(A self avowed socialist)
And they represent it as "History"?
Are ya getting an inkling of our liberal media future???
If history doesn't support your viewpoint? Just Change it!!!
LOL, how do ya like it?

I agree, History Channel & Military Channel used to have great programming. Both have seriously slipped in the last 2 years IMO.
I'm about to drop to basic and stop paying for them. Its just not worth it anymore. The only reason I don't is that the Science channel is still doing some interesting stuff from time to time.
-
Wait until Winston Smith is selected next year and is told to report to the Ministry of Truth - the real re-write will start Jan 2009.
the death of capitalism will be the prelude................

YEA!!! WTF IS UP WITH Monster Quest?! :furious

Many years ago I used to watch the Discovery Channel when they had Wings and other science/engineering type programs (mid 90s). I haven't watched one of their shows in more than a decade.
The History channel never had its golden age so far as I'm concerned. From the very beginning, all of its war "documentaries" were propaganda.
-
I was watching that Showdown Air Combat on the Military Channel, the show where they actually fly the airplanes and he chases them around in an AT-6 describing the dogfight.
Well, this one was P-47 vs Fw 190, and I'm thinking to myself, where did they get the 190? Because I know there aren't too many around let alone any that can fly... So they go to the dogfight portion, and there showing the P-47 flying around, doing maneuvers and such. Then the host (in the back of the AT-6) starts talking about the fight between the P-47 and the Fw190s. Instead of cutting back to the P-47 footage they cut to footage of and Remote Control P47 and Fw190s fighting each other.
The most shameful thing about it was the fact he is describing the Remote Control fight from the back of a AT-6 Texan. I don't see how anybody could of believed it.

LOL it was a good show, up until that point.

When I read this thread topic, I thought Shape Up was a new reality show coming to the History Channel...

No, I think that one's on ABC.

I was incredulous when I saw that. That was the only episode of that series I had seen to that point, and I will not be watching any others.
Why they do not go back to the "classics" of documentaries like the Civil War series, Crusade on Europe, Century of Warfare, War Walks, World at War, Battlefield (of PBS fame, there are alot more never aired in America), Victory at Sea.. heck anything by Cromwell Productions would be easy to acquire and broadcast for less than some of those shows they are doing now.

I use to watch that stuff now it not even on :cry any one remember heavy metal now that was a good show.

To put it plainly, it sucks.
Once The History Channel replaced Dogfights with Ice Road Truckers, I stopped watching.
Television in general is unwatchable.

It so true there noting on that good. :( :(

I'd rather wathch the animation of Dogfights than the silly air naration of Showdown. I don't give a rats posterior about the guy sitting in the back of an AT6. Dogfights was a better presentation even if it was animation.

Agreed.
Although the constant re-explanation of basic flight and combat maneuvers was annoying. Honestly... I could just watch 20+ minutes of Computer animated Air Combat, without narration just Radio Chatter :D

That dose get very annoying.

The air narration stinks but the repeating of material within the same show is worse then Battle 360 even and that got on my nerve. I understood it when they were using animations but its pretty easy to shoot more footage.
Once our vets are lost to the ages it will only get worse.

I liked Deadliest Catch but HC has gone overboard with Ice Road Truckers. It was cool when it was a special episode after that all down hill.
I haven't even turned it on in 2 months. All military channel for me now.

Totally agree Ripchord.
Anyone have the E-mail link? Couldnt find it on their site for all the garbage.
-
There's still some good stuff on there, but you have to pick and choose. They DO still show the old WW2 docs, but maybe just not on at the prime hours. Ice Road Truckers was super lame, it was one episode of material at best. The Iditarod (sp?) Race one was pretty good for the one episode I watched, but that's probably not History Channel. Now that I think about it, you sure Ice Road was on History and not Discovery or something else?
History International, Discovery, Military, Science... if none of them have anything good, there's usually House marathons on TNT or something like that. House being one of the best shows on TV and in rerun.
-
History International, Discovery, Military, Science...
Don't forget NFL Network :)
-
Don't forget NFL Network :)
The way my Lions' season has gone, I'd rather forget it :o
-
Absolutely nothing on television has meaning anymore. Only thing decent is certaain sports. History Channel has nothing going for it,at least discovery has "How Its Made". The international media is trying to sway our beliefs in a certain direction that goes against what history has taught us. Sometime soon someone will step away from the crowd and it will be shuned for not following everyone else.
-
I was actually watching a dogfights episode from a while back on History International last night and say the AH commercial. the first though that wen through my mind was, "Stupid two-weeker HC noobs."
NOTE: Who's the voice in the commercial?
-
That's Coach, IINM.
-
The way my Lions' season has gone, I'd rather forget it :o
Unless you lived inside 8 Mile, why on earth would you ever be a Lions fan?
(they played a hell of a first half Sunday...)
-
Aggreed with both the History Channel and Military history channel.
As annoying as anything.
On the Military history channel the little sniipet presentations they do during the commercial breaks.
Was cool at first.
Was ok after the first 50 times I saw them. started getting old at 100.
They dont come out with any new ones.
Its the same ones over and over and over again.
Anyone but me sick of hearing about Shermans march to the sea?
Does anyone care anymore about that guy and his fragment from the 88?
I'm at the point where I would like to take it from him and hit him with it just to put him out of my misery.
Lately I've been finding myself watching alot of "CSpan 3 History"
Not bad stuff there. None of the flash of History channel
But pretty informative and interesting stuff.
Last night was something they were doing at the WWII museum and news coverage of WWII
An interview with Andy Rooney and someone else talking about how the war was covered. Including about the mistake broadcast by NBC that the invasion had started on June 3rd.
-
Bring back mail call!!!

Bring back mail call!!!
Yes please do i miss watching that show and heavy metal to.
-
Back in the day..
There was a great docu called "Battleline"...
It was chock full of (period correct) film, and the
narration is FACTUAL and quite exciting as well..
RARE film, as the intro said, "from both sides of
the BATTLELINE"... Each episode focused on a
single battle of WWII, Crete, Dieppe, Alamein,
Tarawa, etc etc.. Had combatants from both
sides give testimony, and boatloads of awesome
film.. NOT incorrect generic filler... The real thing!!!
Amazing 20+ episodes, the best!!!!
Definately a must have!!! If you can find it...
These days it seems neccesary to preserve
some of it, before its ALL gone...
You guys remember any others?
-
What the Mil History channel should do is re air "The World at War" as a series.
There are probobly a ton of younger folk who have never seen it
-
This is the very reason i dont have cable.
I refuse to pay for garbage like this.
-
we should all watch some victory at sea, that show is the shiznit
-
What I hate is this..
"Next on the History Channel...The B-29 Superfortress. (Short clip of B-29s taxiing and fire bombing Japan)
then the inevitable...
(B5N rolling of Japanese CV)
"December 7th 1941..."
55 minutes of the same rehashed stuff, and if your lucky you see 5 minutes of the B-29
Same goes for Europe..."The King Tiger..next on the History Channel"
"Hitler invades Poland...blah blah blah"
-
There's also the endless repetition of the same points after every commercial break. It's enough to drive ya crazy!
-
No one has any origionality. Even youtube is getting boring.
-
You all have Deadliest Catch to thank for these new reality shows on HC & Discovery, they saw what a hit it was and had to jump all over the genre.

That's a real shame, because Sig and the gang on DC are great. Frankly there's little to no originality on TV anymore. Oh, and while I'm venting... What idiot decided that anything shot with night vision gear is automatically "scary?"
Typical scene from "Ghost Hunters" (predictably moronic green tint )
"Here we are on the condiment isle of Tom Thumb after-hours in search of paranormal activity... OMG!! what was that?" (camera shakes, grown man screams)
Puleeze

Unless you lived inside 8 Mile, why on earth would you ever be a Lions fan?
(they played a hell of a first half Sunday...)
I grew up around the street that could be called 4.5 mile (but instead has a real street name) ... but west of Detroit in the 'burbs. I'm a Lions fan still because I'm loyal to my teams... Direct TV Sunday Ticket for the past 8 seasons... a timeframe during which the Lions have lost more games than any other team in the NFL. And I've watched every game but two.
A few years ago when the Lions went 1-15, they had the second highest attendance in the NFL, so I'm not alone in loyalty.
Its ok, I have the Red Wings, Pistons, and sometimes Tigers.
-
Back on topic, my favorite all-time WW2 doc TV show was The Color of War, where they only showed footage shot in color. Focused a lot more on the troops than on the battles. They need to re-run that.
-
Completely agree...wtf Ice Road Truckers has to do with history is beyond me.

Not enough truckers fall through the ice which makes for very bad TV

I think Sig should change his names spelling to Cig. As much as he smokes I think his chances of dying from smoking is higher than dying from the Baltic Sea. :D

I agree, but I don't think he's gonna find nearly as many crab in the Baltic Sea.

Oh thats right the Bering Straight
-
I like watching gangland... kinda funny seeing some of the stupid stuff these people say..
Ice-Road Truckers... no... I did like Axe Men though.
Get the Military Channel... THAT has what you're looking for :rock
-
Most of the shows we are talking about are one-hit wonders, if that. Deadliest Catch is a good show though, actual danger.
-
Gangland is good show same with cites of the under world to kind of cool to see how the tunnels were made.
-
I WOULD like to see the old show 'Tales of the Gun' that was an awesome show. Showed a certain military weapon, and then fired it, even had an experimental rocket pistol that this guy shot... :O
I miss that and Dog Fights... :(
-
Dogfights got a little stale since it was only from the perspective of the American side. Would have been a better series if they included dogfights from the British, Japanese and German perspective.
