Title: Well, it happened.
Post by: Tac on November 05, 2008, 01:41:11 PM
Laid off Nov 4.

*grumble*

Now I either head to New Zealand with no job offer and no idea where to stay yet Nov 26 (cheapest airfare) or stay in Florida and try to find whatever toejamty job and head overseas Feb/March after the holiday slump is over.

Not that I did not see this coming but it still bites. ><

Sorry to hear that :(

New Zealand is a phenomenal country, but I think work visas are tough unless they really need your specialty.  The scene may have changed in the past few years, but I know in early 05' when I was there that was the situation.

Good luck with your search.

Here in the Detroit area I wake up everyday hoping I have a job. Been lucky so far, but GM is are prime customer. Just in case we have shut down the pay games and other non essental fun. I haven't gone shooting for the last 3 months. Mostly just sit and pray.

Good luck to you sir.

Losing a job sucks big time. I'm hoping it turns out to be a good thing for you very soon. Best of luck with NZ if that's what you really want. In the mean time take a couple days to decompress then go out and find something to keep you busy if nothing else.

Been there and now doing it.  Out of work.  Unemployment insurance is nice.

Got laid off.  I had them by the PC short hairs, so it became a layoff instead of a firing.  "Hostile work environment" is a good phrase to remember.  A week later I find my position being advertised by the company.  Go figure.

Well just remember that W gave you an extra 13 weeks when the unemployment compensation does run dry. We all paid for it at least someone from the community should benefit from it if its needed.

Job market for System Adminstrator types is pretty tight in SD.

TAC, are you from NZ?  I have always thought NZ and AU would be neat places to visit.  I spent 5 years in the UK while I was with the USAF.

Not sure about where you live, but that is illegal in GA.  If you are laid off, and the position becomes available, they are supposed to offer it to you before anyone else.  They also can't offer it to you for anything less that what you where making when they laid you off.

eh no, im in Florida and was planning to go to NZ for a year under a work visa I already have secured.

Its just that I was planning on going late March so as to not go to NZ and have to pay holiday rates for the stay..plus id believe it'd be like here in the US where companies dont hire much during nov-dec but do hire end of February.

Same here. I'm moving to Florida without a penny and up to my ears in debt. At least I'll be warm.

Tac, what is it you do for a living (obviously prior to the layoff)?

My regards,

Widewing

You are right.  I am just letting the sleeping dog lay.  I know they won't give it to me.  I figure if I complain then they will screw with my unemployment insurance status.  Audits and all that stuff.

However, when things have run their full course then I shall open a can of whoop behind on them.

Long time no see Widewing! How you been ? :)

I work in the travel industry. Wholesale Travel consultant.. in short I do all the background reservation/confirmation for the travel agent's agency after he's done lying and sucking money out of the customer.

I'll be fine financially .. I had originally planned to move overseas this month and had saved and had all my stuff ready but then found out how expensive the holiday season would be in NZ so decided to travel after it .. no need to burn money plus one more xmas with the family is always nice. Will be getting whatever job I can get to last me until march & then i'll do the hop.

In fact, already got an interview tomorrow  :aok

Its funny to think at all this.. my major (International Studies) was turned from a major to a minor in all the Uni's in this city so I got screwed out of it.. nothing else interested me..then landed a job in that travel agency and loved it.. looked for degrees in that but found only hotel-management related ones.. looked out of state and found one in Wisconsin where I had a family member living there so I prepared to move there.. had everything ready & resigned from my job and was heading out to job hunt...

... and to make things short I started having chest pains and as my doc checked me I decided not to leave, they found my triglyceride levels to be suicidally high.. so while I was getting treated for it I stayed in florida and got a job at the company I was just laid off from (which I had contacts with from my previous job..we were their suppliers)... got my US citizenship... and the past 11 months have been the doc checking me up and making sure the medication was working (it is.. normal levels = 150 .. mine were at 980.. now down to 210 and going down with diet change)...

... all the while I looked around and found that in NZ they have a degree thats 100% what I wanted to do.. the Wisconsin degree wasn't this detailed or complete (and was more of a certificate than a degree).. and no other US degree was this complete..

so began to check other options... couldn't afford to go to NZ with a student visa (can only work part-time) .. and I did not have enough pre-reqs to go there and qualify for residency.. so a working holiday visa allows me to live and work there 1 year .. and that 1 year experience + a job offer in NZ (which..if I have a job 1 year I can get the employer to give me visa support) = work-to-residence visa after that 1 year. With that I could become a resident in just 2 years which is perfectly timed to when I would be almost done with the degree.

Got the work visa approved already and I was searching where to live and get best work opportunity in NZ with plans to leave late Nov .. then finding out how expensive it was in NZ in the holidays plus the hiring slump at end of year.. so decided to wait until March '09 .. and now the layoff.

I had heard the 30th year of one's life was a pain in the arse but man... its been exciting  :t :D

I'm aware of the many job openings there Vulcan. Thing is, I have applied already to both of those companies and received a rejection letter. They never say why but im sure its because im not physically in the country.

All things considered, when I head there in late feb/march the housing costs will be lower than in the holiday season & thats $$ ill put to better use at the time :)

..and it gives me time to save more $$ for the trip too!

I do not have an IT degree and my work experience in that field is only tech sales and tech support so I do not think i'd be hired or given visa support just with that. I bet them SA folks with funny english have a bachelors :P
