When I built this PC on 4th of July weekend, I intended on spending A LOT of time with this. I couldn't and regret not taking the time then, but I have just cleaned up the case as best as this "Pain in the arse Case" will allow.
Case is a "very difficult to clean up" Aspire (now Apevia) X-Cruiser. The bar in the rear is the reason for the bundle of cables in the back (out of the way of airflow). I got tired of looking at the Gawdy Yellow dual device round IDE Cable and ordered an 18" Black single device one.
In just 30 minutes tonight I went from this:

I use adhesive backed zip tie bases to secure wires. These are an absolute must for any Case. I have a ton of these on hand and put them in other people's cases when working on them.
To this (I'll post more pics tomorrow when I get home from work):
I rerouted everything on the bottom of the case and tucked the wires farther back under the sound card. I also re-ran the Blue (why Blue and not black WD?) Raptor cable. I wish they made a 4" version of this very cable.
I'll post more pics tomorrow while it's brighter outside, helping see things better. Not a single cable is "in the way of any fan".
-
I should probably go back through an redo the cables in my case again. I'm not a fan of my hard drive cage in my NZXT Lexa case as has the drives going width-wise in the case instead of length wise. This is close to what my case looks like on the inside except I have zip tied most of the stuff istead of the pictures twisty ties. Also there is now a third hard drive and a PCI slot fan under my video card.

You people have cases that look like nightmares and dreams at the same time. Much larger than mine, but in ratio the same amount of wires (same amount of case space taken by those annoying things). Looking in my case...do I actually have RAM in there somewhere? :D
Due to having such bad airflow I actually made a make-shift side for my case. Cardboard cut-out that has room for a 120mm intake and an 80mm out take. Quick question: 2 80mm out and 1 120mm in there a good airflow or should I something change? Yep Micro-ATX PC here.

Well not quite as nice as the rest of you guys, but heres my attempt at cable management. Not bad besides the giant knot of wires at the bottom IMO but thats because my PSU isn't modular or whatever it's called.

Get out the Kodak there Kojak... But my first thoughts are NO not enough air flow. I would have to see. I am a huge fan of SATA drives and cable sleaving (hate IDE cables). Sleaving is a cheep way to increase Air flow and decrease heat.

Karaya has revealed his secret, didn't anyone see that flux capacitor in there?
I installed one in my Wrangler, but I just can't get the damn thing to go 88 mph :furious

Well, not easy to get good pics, but here goes:
Closed (poor siding, but it was the only piece of cardboard laying around):

Here is a System I built last night. Striker Extreme, Q6600, Asus 8800GTX, 4gb OCZ Platnium, Tagan 900 watt, 500gb WD, NZXT Tempest case, 6 Fans. The real machine is in the works... parts due in today :rock

Is the lower front of your case vented? If so under your HD cage you should be able to place a 120 fan there. The one in the back looks a lil weak. What are you basing your temps on that your now using cardboard? (I have seen worse, plastic wrap). Are you using Real Temp? Get it here http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/ (http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/) If it is not running hot put the case back on if it is, heck let it be with no side.

I usually run all of my machines at home without the side cover. There are 2 smokers in my house, and the machines seem to collect less dust (in the hidden spots) that way.

Looks good. I will have to take some pics of mine.

Dust filters work great. I ran my case for about 12 months or so with dust filters that came with it. I virtually never cleaned it and my house has two cats. There was barely any dust in it. Recently, after I did some upgrades (adding parts) and OCing, I needed to generate more airflow in a case that was quickly becoming too warm for my liking. After about 3 months of not running filters on both my side intake and front intake fans, there were some dust bunnies in some corners and dust layers on most of the parts (especially my HSF). Without the filters, my case runs at least 5C cooler and my video card (right next to the side intake) up to 10C cooler on a load.
So if you case temps are pretty good, dust filters really make a difference. However, they can cut your airflow from the fan down quite a bit.
-
I used those Pl*%ge Grab-Its, taped over the intakes, but it just gets too damn hot.
Now I just blow it out every week. Dry air can on one side, vacuum out the other.
Keeps the dust from flying all over the room.
-
I see some of you guys still have IDE hd and cd/dvds. I easy way to add airflow is to separate your IDE data cable. Its easy to do. Turn off machine and power off the board. Remove the ribbon cable, with your finger nail and some pressure in the middle of the cable (about 1/4 inch from the side) separate the cable, repeat until your all the way across. (about 1/4 inch from the side), now twist the cable until it has made a cylinder. Re-install. Violia instant airflow.
Will look like this when done.

Rounded ide cables are also available cheap and they look prettyer than that! :D
Sata is the way to go anyway.

Had any lead breakage doing that?

Agreed check out my two boxes posted here and a third will be up maybe Sunday. Complete H20 system (CPU, MB, HD, Mosfet's, Memory, GPU's) everything in the box except the power supply and the blu-rays. I didnt want to shell out 500 for a water cooled PS since my TT 1200 is new

Lucky for you guys, unfortunately I live in a house with an old coal furnace so dust in my computer is always a battle. Thankfully I do have an air compressor in the garage that cleans everything out like a charm.

What you need are high RPM fans for more airflow! I bought some off Newegg to replace my stock ones in my case. IIRC the stock ones ran about 1100 RPMs for the 120mm's. The ones I ordered (2) were rated at 2200 RPMs. Yup, I could now hear my computer from another room. Eventually I hooked up the new fans to the chasis fan connectors on my motherboard and turned on the Asus Q-Chasis fan feature in the bios. The motherboard adjusts the fan speed based on the mobo temp. I have no control of it but it is much quiete. They run about 1300-1400 RPMs now which moves a good amount of air. When at full blast, I can only image it was a mini-tornado inside my case.

I used to do it all the time before round IDE and SATA came out. To answer your question no I have not to date (knocks on head), but again your using your thumbnail and not a knife, razor, hacksaw, chainsaw. Its a matter or just getting it started then separate like an electrical cord.
-
Excellent post Karaya. I am motivated to clean mine up.

I use Enermax fans a lot and they are whisper quiet and move tons of air. The blade pops out for easy cleaning and they are bearingless.

Ok I didnt manage the cables at all but hey at least I have a badass 16" fan blowing 250cfm air on it!!

I was on the cheap, I think the fans I bought were $4-5

Actually, I use ribbons (IDE) the way they should be used. Creased them at an angle and hugged the HD bay upright and bottom of the case. They worked 100% afterwards and they increase airflow.
Getback, thank you for your compliment. It's not too often compliments are shared on these boards, it's a good start to the weekend to boot. Hopefully, this can be a "new beginning for this BBS."

What do you mean? It's not easy to get all the cables required for raid10 sorted. With the 16" fan there's plenty of airflow regardless. I have 250cfm where your typical 90mm case fan blows 20cfm unobstructed.
-
90mm fan moving 20cfm? What fans you looking at? I see most fans moving air in excess of 100cfm in sizes 80mm and up.

Air In should equal Air Out.

Looking at quiet fans that most people want to use.. Quiet = low rpm, small fan with low rpm means low cfm.
For example 140mm Aerocool EN42383 blows 55cfm at 1000rpm / 19db. That's already 6db louder than my fan.
Those who know sound know that 6db means a double sound pressure.

Air In should equal Air Out.
Well my pc case hardly is a pressure container. You see huge gaping holes on the side?
-
I think I am about ready to start working on a water cooled or something along those lines to eliminate as much of the noise as possible in my system. Any ideas on what to do, etc...?

The highest rated WC systems that are sealed are from Swiftech. Of you can do the componient end and go Danger Den or Koolance. Dollar wise the Contained will run 175 to 250 and are the easiest to install. If you go componient you could spend upwards of 800.00 depending on configuration. I am a dealer for all 3 of the above mentionedand others. Get with me for ideas and pricing. I will beat new egg hands down!To see the swiftech in one of my systems its on the first page. Here is a look at a Koolance setup I have on top and the bottom is a Swiftech. The Koolance wc the Vol Regulators, North Bridge, South Bridge in one loop and the CPU, 280GTXs X2 in SLI in another loop. There are 7 fans, 4 UV lights, 3 Hard drives, 1 DVD, 2 280 GTX's, 2 Pumps, 1 Single radiator and 1 Double radiator all in the box :O. Temps on the Koolance are about 28c. The Swiftech just does the CPU, There are 3 HDs, 2 DVD's 6 fans all in the box. Temps are about 34c Both systems use ultra low 9db fans. Both boxes are at about 20db total. (includes pumps)

Thanks for the info there on the WC setups. I will check them out and let you know what I am looking for. I will most likely do something along those lines for my Christmas present to me.

I guess I need to clean mine up (next re-build) ,
Systems look good guys! :rock

I'm torn. I might keep this case, but I just found the Antec 900 for $79 and the 1200 for $119. I just need a picture of the MB panel side. Every picture shows the usual panel removed, not the back panel.

I own a 1200 and the case is huge... what are you looking for? There is plenty o space behind the right panel for cable management. PSU mounts on the bottom ony thing is the length of your 4/8 pin cable. Also in that 120 range is a NZXT Tempest case, awesome case. Better fit and finsh then the Antec's

Cable management would be my first priority Death. I have the PC&C 750W PSU. I might look at the 900 then maybe, or the Lian Li PC-7B+. I'm assuming the 1200 is a full tower, yeah, moving that around would get old fast.

Then I would look at the NZXT Tempest over the Antec. Quality is as good or better then the Lian Li in that range. I have a Lian Li V2000 case and a NZXT Khaos both costing simular and the NZXT has better fit and finish. All aluminum case seems like it was CNC'ed but it isn't. Welded and screwed and the thickness is twice the Lian Li.

No problem at all here is a link for the tempest http://www.nzxt.com/products/tempest/ (http://www.nzxt.com/products/tempest/)
And if you decide to go H20 in the future the top has room for a Duel Rad btw its this case.

I've enjoyed my NZXT Lexa case for almost 3 years. Only quarks I do not care for on it were the hard drive cage facing the side and in order to install an external 3.5" drive (in my case a card reader), you have to take off the front part of the case which was a pain in the butt. Otherwise, its been hands down the best case I've owned.

Using an Antec 1200 as well and there is plenty of space behind the case, even a couple of pre-installed re-usable zip tie like things backthere for convenience. Only problem I had with wires is my 8 Pin power like death said, so I had to stretch that one straight across my mobo but that's not really a complaint about the case.
