Title: Its so easy to kill
Post by: Sunka on November 06, 2008, 01:34:21 PM
Why is it so easy to range and hit the bird in front of you?In world war two i had always herd you Wait till your right behind your opponent. But in this game people hit me at amazing distances. Is this a game flaw or what?

Two quick thoughts:

How much gunnery practice had WW2 fighter pilots - and how much we have? We practice and practice without end, myself having >30,000 A2A kills in this game alone.

Only few players are actually that good. Average AH player has ~ 3% and when hitting at long ranges it's often more due to pure luck and spraying around

So you are saying you think it is mostly just the practice we get?And the AH firing simulation is ok?

At least it's a very major part in that equation. Having 100 or even 1000 times more experience with much less stress (no fear of dying)  has undoubtedly a major impact on marksmanship. How often did real WW2 aces fire their weapons in live combat? A new player may easily pass this number within his first tour of AH2

Oh, and expanding on what I said above about average skill level: Most players are actually unable to consistently hit at long ranges.

BTW, I have actually much trouble to hit a bird just flying straight in front of me. Long range shots on crossing targets are fine, but sitting on his dead six I suck, regardless of being 100 or 1000 yards away ;)

Ok all your explanations sound good to me.And i love data in black and white,ty.

can't argue with lusche. of course it's always gonna be a bit easier to hit from your computer chair with your high tech smooth as kazaas bum ch stick..

but geez, this game would be boring if you had to sit 10 yards behind your mark. love those crazy shots... and bnzers would hardly get chopped.

And remember we have perfectly modelled guns, no wind, no turbulence, no propwash, etc, combined with thousands of hours of practice. Wasting a thousand rounds to hit that guy at 800 yards just means reupping, or a 30 second rearm and you can be back in the fight within minutes, as opposed to hours.

I think the lack of weather/turbulence plays a significant role in the explanation.  Moreover, real tracer rounds did not follow the exact same path as the bullets they were supposed to help you aim.

Range judgement requires experience especially in a environment with no background objects for reference. And you must remember, for a pilot under normal non-combat conditions, being a mile away from traffic is considered close.

Hub Zemke wrote that the first time he fired his guns in combat, he *thought* he was tailgating the enemy plane. Gun camera footage revealed he opened up at approximately 1,000 yards. So it is entirely possible that when the new pilot thought he was entirely too close to the target, he was at ~200-300 yards.

Besides, you can find examples of some pretty amazing long-range shots from WWII too. I'm talking about nailing crossers in the 400 yard range. With all our practice, it is no surprise some do this consistently.

BTW, if you do a .target command and shoot the thing from auto-level, you will see dispersion, increasing with range. HTC has not equipped us with unrealistic "laser accurate" guns. Well, you know, except that one time it equipped us with lasers...

A game flaw would be making gunnery unrealistically difficult by making our sim aircraft so ridiculously unstable even in trimmed straight and level flight that if you were actually in them, you'd vomit with motion sickness after a few minutes. This being done in some futile quest to make the gunnery of pilots with thousands of hours of flight time innefective, to live up to some unrealistic standard of what "realistic" flying is. Its been done before!

I can never get mine over 10 IIRC... but making level shots is pretty easy. I still have trouble making some deflection shots...

They didn't have big red icons with the range clicking off as they fought like we do. :aok
