Title: PCI Express 2.0 vs. PCI Express
Post by: 442w30 on November 09, 2008, 02:30:39 PM
Is there any advantage or disadvantage to using a motherboard/video card combo that is PCI Express 2.0 vs PCI Express?  Can a PCI Express Video Card be used on a PCI Express 2.0 motherboard?

Thanks in advance for any comments

This should have been in Hardware/Software.  My apologies, I will repost there.

A lot of the PCIe x16 2.0 video cards still don't take full advantage of the 2.0 slots but they are beginning to, which doubles the bandwidth over PCIe x16.

For future-proofing, I'd go 2.0 on both sides as BIOS/Driver updates will modify them to take full advantage if they don't already.  Either way, they are cross-compatible.

I just built a computer that has a PCI-E 2.0 slot but installed a old 7900GTX video card that is only PCI-E 16x.  Works perfectly fine and is actually faster in this system.
