Title: The new guy, day 5.1 11-12 (video included)
Post by: SkyTiger on November 12, 2008, 05:31:52 PM
Moderators: If I shouldn't have made a new thread, please close this one. I decided a fresh one would be prudent as the old one was pretty off-topic.

After a brief break (Sorry Vermont and mercury if it seemed like I was snapping at you. I was just getting kinda blue and frustrated due to several things) I returned to the skies over Tank Town.

I was back in my Hurricane IIC and it seemed some of the Spitfire pilots had come out to play. As I took off, I died the moment my wheels left the runway. A Spitfire strafed me on takeoff.

I felt frustration and almost logged back out but decided to hang in and deal with it. You don't get better by not getting back up when knocked down.

I turned north over the valley and observed that much of the fighting was taking place on the northern part of the island. I then observed to my left and low, two friendlies chasing a Rook LA with a Rook Spitfire and Ki-84 in persuit.

I hoped to bounce the Ki-84 riding Tail-End Charlie but his SA was up to par. He turned into me and flew north as I continued south into the fight. The LA had broken away and all I saw was one friendly chasing the enemy Spitfire. I persued the LA with my energy advantage and caught him. I fired at <400 and scored hits and was quickly going to overshoot. I dipped my nose a little and fired into his tail at 200, 100 and 50 and then pulled up. He augered with his tail shot away.

I turned north and started to climb as my team finished off the Spitfire. A Typhoon soon appeared in the skies and most of my team broke away to chase him. Being in a Hurricane, I knew better than to even try so I kept an eye on a Spitfire, 109 and P-51 who had major altitude on us. I figured while my friendlies chased the Typhoon low I could act as a buffer at mid-level between them and the zoomers.

I noticed the Ki-84 had returned and was starting to drop altitude. Not wanting to get caught, I rolled and went inverted and then pulled into a dive. At about that time the Typhoon came flying through under me. I pulled the dive up a bit and engaged WEP to boost speed.

I dove on the Typhoon, which read as a TEMP when I got closer as it flew over a vehicle base. I fired at 400 as it began to pull away and hit it several times. To my suprise it didn't go down but it did start to bank through the smoke and fire of the base. I persued it in the turn, firing half second bursts at <400 and then again at 200. The Tempest fell out of the sky, possibly with an engine hit.

The Ki-84 bounced me as soon as I tried to hug the ground and get away from the fight. It approached from my 7 o-clock and killed me instantly with a cockpit hit.

The following is a video of the fight. There are no tracers for my guns, as per Jango's advice I turned them off to avoid giving the enemy warning and to help my gunnery.

Hey!  I actually made a posted video, and not as a bunch of assorted airplane parts falling to the ground!  :lol

I had fun in TT today, glad you are having fun as well.

Too bad this good advice will be ignored by the majority.

It's refreshing seeing a new player with your attitude in this game and I look forward to the time we meet in the unfriendly skies.  :salute

Lol, somebody took my advice    :rofl :rofl :rofl

Actualy it was given to me by merlinVI, and since I turned them off Ive found it much easier to bounce sleeping hogs. I find if i try and sneek up behind somone , no matter how well I aim, a random muscle spasm sends bullets everywhere except at the intended target, and of course as soon as tracers starts flying past his cockpit your target will instantly crap himself and try and make your life more difficult..and shorter. Funnily about a minuite after I put that on channel 200 my hurricane got bounced by an f4 whilst on the deck straffing a strat. I was so absorbed in making buildings explode it took a moment to register the bright dots flying past me...luckily he'd missed and given himself away, Id only taken a few hits and made sure he wasnt going to get another free shot like that!  Lesson learned to us both there I think.

And as far as i can tell it does make u a slightly better shot..u watch were the bullets hit, rather than get distracted by where theyre going....And it forces you not to shoot till you know your going to hit! Handy in a Hurricane IIc with its small clip. I swear some of the rides with huge ammo hoppers teach bad habits like spraying and praying at 1400 yards....  :huh  (of course it could be that people who like to spray and pray are attracted to planes with ammo to feed their trigger happiness, but I suspect it works both ways ;) )

I take it u disabled stall limiter too then? You should be able to turn tighter now, though you'll stall more  :D

I tried the stall limitor thing and really didn't like it. The very first fight I was in I stalled out in a bad way. I think I need some more time with AHII before I can comfortably turn it off again. I guess I still need my training wheels.  :D

Honestly, if I were you, I'd turn it off now and get started learning to fly without it now rather then later.  I turned it off as soon as I learned that it was there and never looked back.  By flying with it on for awhile before shutting it off, you may just get bad habits further ingrained into your style of flying.

one of the first things i was told in the training arena was to turn off the stall limiter. it only takes a littlewhile to get used to it, and seeing as you're a very quick study, i think you'd get the feel for it in only a couple flights.

the tracer thing, though, i was never able to get used to. mine are still on.

You definitely need to turn off stall limiter, no matter how good you get the guy with it off will have the advantage.

Yep, the stall limiter is no good.  My hats off to ya SkyTiger for flying a Hurri instead of a spit of la. If you need some hurri2 pointers look up Grim on the knight side. He's a handful in a fight.  :salute

Gets on my nerves more seeing a hurri than a spit/la. spits n lalas u can suck in and toy with. cant get cute against a hurri and your attack options on them are limited.

Hehe, I occaisionally will simply avoid a Hurricaine if there are other targets to choose from.  Too often a Hurricaine pilot is all about HOing at every possible chance.  Unless a Hurri has a big E advantage on me, I can usually stay away from one until the situation is more in my favor.

I found that the best way to learn was to dive right in to the fight....meaning turn off the stall limiter.  You are really limiting what your plane is capable of doing.  The way I look at it is if you have the stall limiter turned on while learning a plane, you will have to re-learn the plane when you turn it off.  My $.02.
