Title: Off-map flights?
Post by: Fidd on March 04, 2001, 04:11:00 AM
I'm sure this is nothing new - but I for one am getting irratated by off-map flights, especially on this new terrain. Any bloody fool can launch a lancaster and fly it with near impunity to an enemy HQ via the outside of the map, regardless of how organised the defense is. Given that these flights are almost largely "afk" on auto-climb, this is pure gaming, and should be stopped (imho). The same applies to being able to position CV's off map.

Possible (?) solutions:

Once an aircraft strays outside of the map..

1. put the aircraft in a 4000fpm descent rate, to persist until such time as it re-enters "legal" airspace. Player (elevator) control inputs cease in "illegal" airspace. In the case of CV's, they should be caused to commence steaming back to home port via most direct sea route.

2. Permit up to 10 minutes (per flight) of "illegal" airspace flight, during which a coloured warning text shows that you are in "illegal" airspace. After 10 minutes, your guns will not fire, nor bombs drop until u re-arm at a friendly field, or re-plane. This has the benefit of allowing fights to occur near the map edge with accidental straying to off-map not being punished, but persistant use of off-map to evade detection being precluded. In the case of CV's, disallow off-map positioning by causing the off-map areas to be considered "land" for waypoints.

Possible? Desireable?

I like it.

One possible way to implement this without too much additional work might be to use the stick stirring code.  Just freeze the controls  for short periods and issue a warning, then disable the ordiance after a certain amount of time.

I agree totally Fidd, its probably the #1 "bug" on my list. Totally frustrating.

Another option is to just disco anybody that leaves the legal playing area.

Good topic!  I really do hope this is fixed.

Maybe by nailing the bastards with a thermo nuclear tipped Nike?!?!

20-30 88mm's per sector, located right down the middle of the sector right off the map.

I'd rather rattle their brains a bit  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Just make it an instant "God kill" for those who fly or sail off the map for more than 5 minutes. Why make it a hard deal to code. You leave the map, you get rapid return to tower.

Interesting enough, we had a flight near A52 and I instructed everyone to "fly to the edge of the map where the ground meets the sea"...and when we did so, we were in the first white border area of the pretty stuff on the clipboard..still legally on the map mind you, but not per the visual of the clipboard.  I say fix the map border first, then implement suggestions above.

End of world=fall to death.  Instant.  If you're in a dogfight that's tough, what did you think, the world is round and goes on forever?

I am all for the insta-death for the off-the-map flyiers. And possibly a 100 perkies fine.

Perks should only be awarded to honest players.

Cheers,

Pepe.

make the earth round - once off one side, you pop in on the opposite side of the map..

Intersting replies. I think it would be unwise to have planes able to "warp" from one side of the map to the other - remember anything like that can be exploited! I think also that we need to encourage people to stay OUT of off-map areas, at least for a prolonged period, but not do anything instantaneous in nature, as it will be highly annoying to be mid furball near to an off-map area and get killed by the host merely because (as part of ACM) you have momentarily strayed into an off-map area.

For this reason I suggested the 10 (or maybe 5?) minute grace period. This would preclude someone climbing off-map to magically reappear by HQ, but would not punish someone for a midfight momentary lapse.

It would be nice to hear from HTC their views on this.

Fidd,

midfight momentary lapse punishment is already modelled in the game.

Yes, I tried the hanged the usual banner "Don't shoot, AFK" outside my autoclimbing plane, I even try to add "please" at the end, to no use.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

If you take a break, you should bear in mind potential implications, and take preventive actions.

Cheers,

Pepe.

Simple solution.........

Add 1 more sector around the whole map as a water border. That way anyone flying off map will be easily spotted........

Extend the map..

Dog out.

The off the map flying is a frustrating situation that promotes milkrunning.  An ethical problem perhaps in that it allows easy accumulation of points or defense proof attacks on an HQ.  This calls for drastic measures (IMO)- The intruder loses all of their perk points and their score gets reset to zero.  The price needs to be high for a single player using this method to significantly diminish the gameplay of one country's pilots for several hours.  Either that or remove the oxygen over the land outside of the map's borders.  The pilot blacks out and the engines quit until the airplane returns to the map.

I like that idea. It tortures the off-map stratobuff dweeb. Muahah.

Lets comine that with having a toejamload of flak batterier in the off-map areas.

Im really getting sick of this stuff with this map too. With the old map at least these clowns had to invest an hour or so to get to the target. Put an off map speed multplier of 10% in effect, ie 150 mph = 15 mph, betcha that would stop them

Even easier, have fuel burn multiplier kick in at 10X normal while off the map...

If you fly for for 10 seconds it won't hurt you too much, but if you stay out there you'll be outta fuel in 5 minutes.
