Title: Did you/Any familly who served?
Post by: Curlew on November 13, 2008, 03:53:21 PM
I was just currious how many people here have served the country, and how many who have family who are vetrans. My unkle is curently a naval captain running the intelegence dept on a aircraft carrier, My great unkle was a higgins boat driver slated to be on the first landing of japan (thank god we dropped the bomb), and my grandfather was the helmsman on the dds Herrman and was inlovled in the battle of San Bernidino Straights.

I know this thread is a little late seeing as how vetrans day was a few days ago, but that shouldnt stop us from honoring those who hav served.

SO FOR THOS WHO HAVE SERVED  :salute

(Pics if you can too, ill get some up in a bit)

My Grandfather Rollie "Buddy" Snell fought since day 1 with the 45th Infantry Division. 2 of his friends in his company got the Medal of Honor, and he got 2 silver stars himself.

At the battle of Anzio, his company, and one other company got a Presidential citation. He was one of the few men who survived the battle. His company lost 75% of their guys, he was the 25% that was unharmed. He got wounded and got the purple heart in Germany, late in the war. (There is a video of him when he got shot IIRC)

My Uncle, Charles Felker, he fought in every battle the 27th Infantry Division fought in up to Saipan. At Saipan, he got wounded by a Japanese Machine gun, then a Japanese Grenade. The doctors thought he was gonna die, so they put him outside the tent with the dead after medicating him on Morphine. That night, Japanese raiders killed everyone inside the tent, but left the part full of the dead alone. IIRC, he is the only survivor from that tent.

Grandfather (army) was a medic in Europe in WWII entered at d+30 Batogne. Past away this year in April about 2 weeks before my birthday.

Uncle who was fighter pilot in AAF though the best details I have been able to get about him was that he flew both single and 2 engine fighters. I still continue looking on the internet for details though. Try doing a google search for John Crawford one time and see how many sites you get. It seems that there was a general who died in Gettysburg during the Civil War and Gettysburg is where my uncle lived when he died, further complicating issues.

Father-in-law was marine served in Vietnam and wife's uncle served in vietnam as a marine also though he died several weeks after returning home in a car crash.

my blood father was a navy man though I never knew him

My grandfather was in the 873rd Engineer Aviation Bn. in the Pacific. My mom told me his job was to go in and secure Japanese airfields after they had been bombed by our bombers and rebuild the airfields for US planes to use. All the Japanese would run and hide in the jungle and the 873rd had to watch out for any Japanese snipers or groups of Japanese soldiers ready to fight back.

He was trained to fly in by glider, but couldn't because of all the jungle.

His name is underlined (E.Stack). Second row, 2nd to last, with his arm around another guy.

Here are a couple pics he took:

Jack16, that unknown plane is a recon version of the P38. The nose has cameras instead of guns and it has a side lens so pictures can be taken to the side of the target instead of directly over it.

Grandfather was a fire chief at Charleston AFB. Have some very insane looking pictures of things he had to "deal with". He came to Wings over Houston and was disgusted to see civilians sitting on the emergency vehicles. He would have had them with their engines running, and drivers in their seats at all times.

Other grandfather was Navy.
Cousin in the Marines.

I found it on ancestry.com back when they had a free period, just some basic info, nothing to detailed.  I havent put as much effort into it as I would like, just to busy right now.  I found a few websites that had some details so I know more information is out there.   My dad is in regular contact with one of his cousins thats been doing some research and one of my nieces has spent the last couple of years tracking down photographs and personal histories from everybody in the family.  The little bit I can recall is there were a couple of Treadwells that came from England to Massachuetts area around 1609 or 1612, and then they bred like rabbits.  During the Revolutionary war the family split, those loyal to the crown went to Canada.
I have a copy of the family bible that shows my direct ancestors back to Georgia and South Carolina about 1848.  I havent searched farther back than that to see how we might be linked to 1609

That's awesome, the furthest I can go back so far is around 1720's, beyond that is sketchy, but there are people on each side looking, so hopefully they'll come up with something.

Awesome reading here .. makes me wonder about tracing my family back, I can't go very far (Civil War) due to a fire in some county courthouse that erased our family's history long ago, apparantly no records were kept at home back then.

From myself back:
USAF/ECM 1972-1986, mostly flightline, spent some time in Southeast Asia, Germany, Korea.. young man's passion.

brudda USAF retired after 20, Crypto-geek. I hear he shook hands with Regan an stuff for some of the things he did.

Dad, Army during WW2 (arty observer for Patton's 3rd for entire war) then txferred to USAF in 1945, retired at 30yrs)

Uncle Bert, USMC WW2, Guadalcanal, sent stateside when wounded ..his CO told him to enjoy time there before the Japs came.
(they really thought there was no way the Allies could hold everyone off, much less 'win')

Uncle William Rathgeber, 8th AF B-17's through the bad days of 1943, I was told he went back for second tour, txferred to MAC after the war, died in the fog near Templehof durin the Berlin Airlift, 1948.

Paternal Great grandfather was Major on the Union side, Civil War. Married a Cherokee lady after the war, was in the March of Tears.
I still remember the smell of her cookies ..she made the best I ever had.

Aye .. a lot of us have been at this awhile.
Warriors all.

Many members of my family had the "honour" to serve during WW2. Two of them:

My granduncle Günther. Was killed as a pilot in Russia. Sadly, no documents survived the war. I'm currently working the archives get more info than the unreliable family gossips.

His brother Hans-Joachim, my grandfather. Was a professional soldier (Luftwaffe) 1936-1945, finishing the war at the rank of Oberfeldwebel. Had many different functions during his service, motorcycle instructor at first, later for a large part of the war being a dispatch rider (mainly in russia) and ending up fighting as a paratrooper (who never received any kind of parachute training). Was being wounded three times.

Didn't tell much about the war, but the few things he mentioned were making a profound impression on young Lusche. War ain't no fun nor glorious thing...

Myself? Unfit for miltary service, so I never were drafted :)

My Maternal Grandfather US ARMY with the 84th Railsplitters. Hes been quiet for so many years and was recently recognized as a "Hero" in the county where he resides. I did a bit of research and found info about some of the sights that confronted him during the war. Now I understand why he has been so quiet for so many years. Won the Bronze Star twice.

My Uncle John retired USN Commander: went to Vietnam as a corpsman for Marines, ended up doing 2 tours. Came home and went to college then to OCS.

My Uncle Allen served in the US ARMY during Vietnam

My Father served as a boiler tender in the USNR after Korea and prior to Vietnam.

My Cousin Dan is currently serving as a Captain in the US ARMY in Iraq.

My Cousin Andrew is currently serving with the US ARMY in Korea.

My Nephew Sammy is currently serving with the US ARMY in Afghanistan.

Myself, USN 1983-1987 USS Koelsch, GMG3 on 5 inch 38 caliber single mounts.

I need to research this. Was tould my last uncle got drunk and was hit by a car. Some reason I liked that story better. She still has some telegraphs.

Me, my brother, about 1/2 my cousins, all my uncles, both my Grand pops, my Dad. Pretty standard for an American working class family. Even without the draft many still join out of commitment and wanting self-improvement. My Dad tended bar at an AmVets lodge and the US Military, in some way, was always around during my life.

When I came home in the early '80s I used to drink at the AmVets or at a German bar we had in the neighborhood. Once a week a bunch of German WW-2 vets would meet and I'd sit there drinking beer with them. The funny thing is they were almost exactly like the American Vets I hung out with at my Pops Amvets. Neither never said anything bad about the other and neither side ever had much good to say about Politics. And neither ever said anything good about war.

One uncle in France, another uncle wounded on IWO. Another uncle would have served in the army air corp B-24 gunner but got a TB diagnosis and the war ended while he was in a sanitarium.

Father served in air force Vietnam.

Me? Came of age during the Carter administration, not much motivation to serve. (regrets) but I have seen Platoon a couple of dozen times, that count for anything?

United States Army.
Last Unit was the 1/11 ACR in Fulda Germany. When I got there Fulda was near the Inter-German Border, when I left Fulda was in the center of the recently reunified Germany.

Our Squad (False Prophets) is mad up almost entirely of active duty/prior service Military personnel. If you'd like to wing with us PM me here or in the MA... We are a Bishop squad so if you have a "MAJOR ISSUE" with flying Bishop, please disregard. ;)

Father USN 1943-46. Coast Guard 1948-1968. Served on a ammunition ship. POW? Philippines. Grandmother said his ship was sunk and he was a POW in the Philippines. He never talks about it. He often mentioned the 7 Captains masts and 3 Court Martials he attended. And during the war "enjoy today for tomorrow you may be dead". During battles, in the engineering spaces there was always an officer with a loaded 45 at the exit door.

Uncle USN 1942-1946 USS Saratoga. His reminiscences are of going to the brig. One uncle was on the USS Morrison (DD 560)when it was sunk(kamikaze?). He survived. Another served on the USS Newberry (APA 158). As per my aunt, she had 3 brothers that served. And 2 were wind talkers. The uncle on the Newberry was supposedly one of the wind talkers. He did have a lot of wind. He became a lawyer after the war.
Couple of other uncles served in WW2 not sure where though. My grandfather worked with home defense in Alaska (as did many Alaska residents) during the war.

I went into the Navy in 1976 and retired in 1998. My older brother did a tour in the Army. 1st Air Cav. One nephew is in the USMC. He was scheduled to go to Iraq in January, but that has been delayed. I have probably fifty nieces and nephews and many have served or are currently serving. Mostly Navy.

Sir Francis, I would like some info on your grandfather if you have it like unit, aircraft he flew.  I've got a hunch we might know some folks that flew against him if he was over Russia.

well, now I have a bit more Infos about my grandfather. He was a technical officer (TO) at Jagdgeschwader 3 (Udet) and Jagdgeschwader 2 (Richthofen). There a some pictures he shot (even in colour). If I have them scanned, I can post them here (if allowed)...

Here is a picture of him together with (from left to right: Maj Jansen, Oberst Lützow, Oberst Dahl (http://www.luftwaffe.cz/dahl.html) and my grandfather to the right.

My Father and his brother transferred from MN to RN during WW2 both Lt Engineering, Mum was a Leading Wren 1942-45. Paternal uncle was in the Army in Burma during WW2, couple of second cousins were aircrew with Bomber Command (both KIA) and one was a Marine. Both in-laws were in the Army in the fifties.
Paternal Grandfather and Great Uncle MN / RN WW1, Maternal Grandfather Army WW1.
Various Cousins and Nephews served in US and Aus forces
I'm MN, applied for RN in 84 but failed the selection board interview, telling the headmaster that my favourite day of my school career was the day I left probably lost me lots of perk points. I think I pawned myself that day.
