Anyone know where to find cheap laptops...600 or less? Maybe 700. I was looking at an hp dv7z...
I'm looking for something to replace my Inspiron 6000 thats running slower than anything right now. I've done Adware, Spybot, etc you name it I've done it, nothing worked.
Anyone know/trust a place that has good deals?

walmart had one saturday on a saturday only sale that was $300. Forgot the name but it was a cheap POS
best buy had one sunday on sale for $300, thought it was an E-machines. It was a cheap POS too
-
Yeah TBH i doubt I'd go under 400...just because I wouldn't trust it. I really don't trust a no name brand or some online store you've never heard of.
-
I dont really like E-machines stuff.
Those laptops I seen on sale, I read the reviews on them and they were made with the cheapest of cheap flimsy parts. Just an "oops" waiting to happen.
I wouldnt mind a nice gaming laptop though, but too costly for me

Dell Inspiron at 499$ dont know about software though. And make sure to get windows mojave. :rofl

Yeah, I've got a gaming computer so I'm not looking for something all too powerful.
I don't really wanna go back to Dells if I don't have to. What Inspiron is it? Bad thing about them is they don't have a built in web cam.

Have you looked at refurb places? Really great deals can be found there, plus they will usually only have just an OS, and not much useless dreck added to the HD.
try these:

Wife has a refurb for work, works great and can run PS without hiccups.

I'm still amazed what the resale value of used laptops are. Either on Craiglists/Ebay/retailers. You spend $100+ and you can get a budget laptop thats 'new' and will beat something thats 2+ years old.
-
wait till xmas..... last year many retailers had laptops for $200 limited quantities to get customers throught the door. I bet they do it again.

Inspiron does have built in web came! :D and hmm death might have good idea, did I say that out loud. :uhoh

My ex-boss's wife went to walmart on black friday for a $250 laptop last year. I don't remember the processor but I believe it was an Acer with Vista Home Basic and only 512mb ram. He asked me a month or so later on how to make it faster and I suggested more RAM. I showed him that (at the time) 2gb of ddr2 was $45. He gladly ordered it after his wife took it to a computer shop and they quoted $180 for the ram upgrade IIRC. Must of been some computer shop

because of the high demand for laptops... quality desk tops are CHEAP

Go for lower end Lenovo's or the lower end of HP's NEW business line. Both series are solid and well buildt laptops that you can trust.

Compaq Presario CQ50-139WM Notebook PC
Hewlett-Packard

Good post. I've been looking for one to use at work to keep records, burn and play discs and surf the web. So far I'm liking the Dell Inspiron 13 for $619.00. 2gb memory,160gb hard drive, intel duel core processor, and plays and creates cds&dvds.
:salute

Our IT department prefers Lenovo and Toshiba, due to them having the best durability.

From what I remember reading in Consumer reports, the repair numbers were lowest on Toshiba and IBM. Apple had the lowest overall, but who really wants to pay twice as much for an elitist POS?

I've owned about 25 laptops over the last 7 years. No I am not making this up. Costco used to have a program where ANY computer was returnable for up to 6 months. As soon as I figured this out I was trading in my laptop almost every 2 months, every time a new one came out with better performance at the same price. After a few years of doing this I got my wife on the same program, so we had 2 laptops at once and would stagger the trade in times so we were never without a laptop. This also allowed us to custom order HPs through cosco's website to the exact specs we wanted, while it took 4-5 weeks to have them custom built we didn't care because we had 2, and were staggering the returns, we never were without a computer.
I lost track at 17 but I am guessing we ended up with about 25-30 different laptops over 7 years. Then Costco changed their policy, I'd like to think at the board meeting they brought up my personal account as an example. I never bought ANYTHING at Costco other than the laptop, so my record would only show the many returns. When they did change their policy to not allow returns on computers, I simply allowed my membership to expire, then went and returned the laptop for the last time. See when you make a return with a receipt and no membership, they have no way to give you in store credit so they must give you cash. :rock
So after buying a computer, trading it in every time a new computer came out, and getting ~25 over 7 years, I got a FULL CASH REFUND of my original purchase price. This was the best legal scam ever, basically a free, new, top of the line computer for 7 years. Oh and the return policy, well like I said no questions asked, I even spilt a full beer on the keyboard one time and fried the poor thing, had a brand new one the very next day!
Anyway, the bottom line is I have a lot of experience with all of the major brands. Most of them are total crap. HP and Dell are the worst, Toshiba is only slightly better. After I got my cash refund from Costco I went out and bought a middle of the line Sony, and COULD NOT BE HAPPIER. You will pay slightly more for the same performance, but it is well worth it. The quality of the sony is just so much better in every way, the built in mouse pad, the keyboard, the way the case is made, the list goes on and on.
Also another thing I would recommend, buy a laptop with the least amount of ram you can find, then upgrade it yourself. The reason, the computer companies charge way more for ram than what you can buy it for separately, and the upgrade is very easy to do yourself. I custom ordered my sony and chose to have nicer components but the least amount of ram they offered (I think it was 512), then simply bought 2 gigs for $45. If I would have got the 2 gigs from the start, sony would have charged $200!

My dad's trusted Dells all his life and I love em, but I want to jump into something different now. HP's have always lasted me a fair amount of time.
Hog, what would you recommend?
-
I think I got a pretty good deal on an ASUS laptop from newegg, 1 gig vid card, 4 gig of ram, dvd burner, 250 gig hd. Only a 15.4 inch monitor though. :frown: The it was around 1200 or so, a little more than most want to spend but the vid card was well worth it.

Out of all the ones I've used I'm most happy with my Sony. Of course, just like all of them, its components are mostly generic and can be found in most of the brands. However my recommendation is based on the actual quality of the laptop, the quality of the keyboard, the mouse, the speakers, the battery, the card readers, all the things that are brand specific. The best take home value will still be HP, but I just don't think they are built to last very long. I just don't feel like the 'fit and finish' is up to par. I literally wore out a mouse pad on one in less than 6 months, while after a year with my Sony the mouse pad doesn't even show use, just as one example.

Sony's aren't cheap probably number 1 brand. If not going for a Dell, HP and toshiba sound good. Would go with the toshiba IMO.

It is a very nice computer the only problem is that it didnt have alot of memory so i bought 2048MB for like $30 from tigerdirect also. Refurbished laptops and computers are good too. My brother got a real nice HP laptop from tigerdirect. not sure which tho, but it is really fast. he uses it for everything!

If it's a software problem a reformat and reinstall will fix it. No need to get a new laptop.

I've tried reinstalls, RAM upgrades, everything...
