The range on the icons are to make up with the inherent shortcomings of a 2D display to gauge distance.

First, I'm not good at English.

We have optical gunsight with circle to ranging from wing span and human's eyes are not too accurate so long distance.

WW2 pilot's measurement of the distance was often mistaken to attack heavy bomber.

Without icons we would be playing as fighter pilots who have vision so impaired that they could not get a drivers license.

The distance is not displayed in almost racing games.

The distance is not displayed in almost racing games.
The need to identify your opponent's attitude, altitude, energy and distance at moderate to long range is also, coincidentally, not needed in racing games.

Racing games also don't require you to be able to read street signs and the traffic signs they do require you to read are oversized.

Chasing dots is not fun.  I've done it and it does not make for thrilling aerial combat, just boredom.

Of the things you listed, I do agree about the historical tank sights.
