My 12 year old learned how to 'make a virus.'
Actually, it only appears to be a virus, so he's no longer allowed on my computer, or my husbands... he's stuck on his own computer ~ and that's IT!
He learned how to do the thing where if you click on something it brings about 20 pop up windows, then executes a shut down command. But the pop up windows, he places a message that windows has detected something or another virus and is wiping C drive. Then it shuts down.
It doesn't actually wipe the C drive, but it makes you think it does from what he types in the message window.
I don't like surprises, so his little prank wasn't funny to me. But he thought it was hilarious. I told him to think it was hilarious on his own computer all day long, and to stay away from mine.
I wonder if this is how master-hackers-wanted-by-the-law begin?

Do wipe out his C drive, so he learns that viruses are not fun when they hit you. :D
-
I think you found is calling tho.....computer programming.
:D
Race

Sounds funny to me, I've done it to my parents before. They thought it was funny as well.
-
Whats that? The shutdown -s -t -c dos command thing?
-
wow, gotta give him points from doing it at some young age
:aok
-
You can do that remotely, too.
-
most master hackers end up with a criminal record but a very juicy career with corporations that hire them for anti-hacking.
anyways, its good he knows stuff that young. focus it on something productive. Perhaps compute game programming? Mmmm...

TexasMom coming from someone who hasn't any kids you can take this with a grain of thought. Doing something like that to me would have lost even his computer!
I know that schools pretty much require kids to have access to them now days. So maybe an hour or two to do his home work. But no games, and Mom checking the back of his neck every few minutes would teach him not to do stuff like that.
Good luck with the problem!

Ma.. 12 years old?
It's tuff sometimes, teaching kids respect for property.. theirs, or anybody elses. I found it was a mistake to NOT insist my wife strenuously disabuse my daughters notions of destructive humor at that age.
When it came time for her to go pick my daughter up at the police station few years later, it was pretty much too late.

get 'em back.
go to your kids computer and hit PRINT SCREEN.
then open up MS Paint, click Edit then PASTE.
Save as JPEG, open it up, and set that as the Desktop Background.
THEN just drag all the icon's on the desktop into a folder and move it onto the C: Drive. (just go to My Computer, C: and cut/paste it in there)
Your kid will freak out when he can't click anything.
It's a good 'un.

LOL!
I've done this to my parents and numerous classmates as well, always good for some laughs :)

I can one-up you here.
1. Start as above, taking a screenshot of the desktop. Paste it in a graphics editor, then INVERT (it must be flipped NOT rotated to appear correctly) the image so it's upside down.
2. Save this and set it as the desktop background.
3. Hide their desktop icons (there's an actual option to hide the icons, so you don't need to move them to a folder).
4. Set the task bar to auto-hide, and reposition it to the TOP of the screen.
5. Invert the desktop (usually CTRL-ALT-Down Arrow, or do it from the Advanced options under the Display Settings depending on your monitor and video card).
6. Sit back and laugh.
You can complete this image by creating an inverted mouse pointer (inverting the desktop will make the mouse pointer look like it's upside down, so creating a special pointer will fix this).

I wouldn't find it funny at all! There would be a price to pay for that. Since I don't spank I would think of something really devious.

If you really want to get someone good, download the BSOD screensaver from Microsoft. It's a screensaver that looks like a BSOD and generates an actual memory error code and when you press a key to get out, it makes it look like its rebooting. Very good joke to play on co-workers.
ack-ack

Anyone remember the movie "sneakers"? Or if you want a peek at Angelina's ta-tas you could check out the movie Hackers. The computer scenes are fairly lame but the movie is funny.

You have smoked enough, this morning. I will now confiscate the rest, thank you.
TxMom.
Duct tape and closets...........

ahhhh mom! I haven't smoked today yet! I'm still recovering at work from the Bob Weir and Ratdog show in Greensboro last night.
:pray

sounds like he probably made a batch file. You may want to keep an eye on him because while this one only said it was clearing your C drive and rebooting you can just as easily make a batch file that does clear the C drive.
-
dang ~ GREAT idea!
Don't wipe his HD, just remove the HD from the boot order. :devil Be sure to password protect the BIOS after you do it. After he's suffered enough, just put it back.
Mom, you might consider Ghosting backup images of your's and your husband's machines. Always a good idea, especially in a house with kids.

Hehe, i remember when i was around 10 or so my friend and i installed a program on his dad's PC that when you click on it, a box pops up informing you that your C: drive will be formatted in 30 seconds unless you click cancel. As the cursor moves closer to the box, the box moves away across your screen. It was hilarious hearing his dad's cries as we sat giggling in the next room- we felt a little guilty when we walked in as he was pulling out the plug to save his drive.
We also installed a "sticky mouse" program that randomly stops any mouse input for a second or so on my brother's PC. He must have spent the better part of a morning cleaning and recleaning his mouse rollers and ball.
Boys will be boys. :D :devil

you should play a prank on him by giving his computer away, to me.. also all of his valuables.

There are sites that you can go to that will allows you download a harmless trojan onto the computer. I used to do it as pranks, you can never erase them but it's really funny when every 16th time somebody presses the letter 'I' for .15 seconds a man flips you off on the screen or something. Just long enough for you to notice something changed in the corner of your eye, but not enough solid evidence to investigate if anything really happens. They got all sorts of stuff those sites, if you wanna get a laugh at your friend (or enemy) that's the way to go.
