The Royal Marines have a solution for this nonsense.

owch more than a 1/4 of saudi arabias oil output hurts :uhoh

This kind of stuff won't go on for much longer. With all of the recent pirates problems making it to the media, I just don't see it lasting.
In this latest situation I wouldn't be surprised if a US based assault team like the SEALS boards the ship at night and simply kills the pirates. That seems like such a simple solution, although according to that report there have been ships under pirate control since September :huh.

The somali govt doesnt seem to concerned about it.
seems some form of military solution is in order for the pirates and the somali govt who are certainly profiting from it.
its just a matter of time before their ports will be occupied and removed from their control.

Why would they take care of it, its money flowing into thier economy and its less people for them to take care of, its a extremely good for them

that was the purpose of my post.
I guess I didnt word it properly.
"seems some form of military solution is in order for the pirates and the somali govt who are certainly profiting from it"
I meant for both the pirates and the somali govt to see a military solution to eliminate the problem, against them.

Short of a multi national naval blockade I don't know how an organized response can be made to the continuing piracy. I'm not familiar with Naval operations so am out of my comfort zone in thinking about tactics for it.

Hitting the Saudi oil?
Yep, this won't go on much longer. I'd expect some real punishment dished out in the near future.
-
What we need now are a few good privateers. The countries who are being affected by these pirates should be issuing letters of marque and promise the privateers a portion of the recovered cargo. I bet the problem would resolve itself pretty quick.
-
"Somali Govt" doesn't mean too much... The govt we recognize there doesn't control much of the country, and the pirates are big players in funding the islamist insurgency. Both sides claim that they are the legit govt. So far, the only nation who has been invited in to help in all ways with the piracy problem are the Russians, but they simply don't have the navy or funding for effective expeditionary forces.
The US and our other NATO allies could probably do it, but we weren't invited.
As for why the oil tanker managed to get caught, imagine the ecological disaster an RPG or two would cause... If I was a pirate I'd have one dude tasked to vent the entire tanker to sea if he saw or heard anything resembling a rescue or boarding party. The amount they're asking is less than what it would cost to clean up the mess if the oil was dumped, so the boat owners (or whoever contracted for the cargo) will probably just pay to avoid getting sued out of existence.

I guess the ships can be boarded since the Pirates could do it in the first place.
However, they have Hostages...

I'm curious why there isn't some interdiction hardware on tankers to prevent any uninvited ships from getting within RPG range. Is it that these pirate groups have the means to one-up any such long arm defense strategy?

don't worry hillary has a plan LOL

Well the presence of two Brits "might" justify American military action. But only that would! As far as Im concerned they can grab as many Saudis as they want. Let the Saudis grow some stones and deal with it. Most of all since their smelly little Kingdom has been the biggest monetary supporter of Islamic violence in the region, and in the world. And I wonder how many thousands of young Saudis, seeking adventure, have gone south to fight with the Islamic factions in Somalia?
I could care less if Saudi A-Rabia burns to the ground.

we're more than capable of handling this on our own, but thanks for the offer :D

Yes, I know. But keep in mind we've never been to proud to ask for British help.
Even with the incomparable might of the USN mind you. Also our Special Ops command is also heavily invested in Somalia, along with our Ethiopian minions. We have a lot of assets in place that could be of great help.
-
thinking about it we dont currently have a SSN with a dry dock for launching minisubs, so the SBS would have to kayak/swim over to the tanker. do the USN pick up hitchhikers? ;)

Yes let the SAS go deal out a little justice

In the past week alone:
• A Russian warship in the Gulf of Aden drove off pirates who tried to capture the Saudi Arabian merchant ship Rabih
• Pirates hijacked a Japanese cargo ship off Somalia
• A Chinese fishing boat was seized off the Kenyan coast
• A Turkish ship transporting chemicals to India was hijacked off Yemen
• The UK's Royal Navy shot dead two suspected pirates attacking a Danish cargo-ship off the coast of Yemen
-
You want to know the easiest way not to get hijacked?
Don't go near the area they are at.
-
That's oversimplified and encourages the behavior IMO. At least a partial solution would come in the form of port seizures and continued interdiction from a multi-national naval team.
-
Pirates?? What that ship crew needs is a Ninja escort. Those arent even real pirates, i haven't seen one eye-patch. And against Ninjas, Pirates wouldn't stand chance.

Pirates?? I really don't see what the big problem is, what that ship crew needs is a Ninja escort. Those arent even real pirates, i haven't seen one eye-patch. And against Ninjas, Pirates wouldn't stand chance.

Well its highly doubtful the pirates are launching out of ports. You can launch a dhow from any ragged swamp. Next you couldn't compare a port operation as a "seizure". It would more be like an invasion and your'd better have 10,000 marines along, along with, an awful lot of firepower. And for what? All those new casualties and picture of dead Somalian kids? Also the USN has always been much more concerned about the safety of ships under the American flag. And why shouldn't we be? Think the Russians, Saudis, Turks, Japs, or Chinese would give a damn about us?
Mostly this is all small freighter stuff. We Yanks don't really do that kind of business and any Yank seaman has better sense then to sign on with a small freighter operating out of those waters with an American passport.
I say dial up the United Nations. Let those pimps and prostitutes deal with it, "in between lunches at high line NY restaurants with their Diplo plates parked everywhere".
