In WWII i have never heard of the ostwind or the wirbelwind.
I even have a friend that knows everything about WWII (he can name every varient of all planes/gvs and their armament)
and i acked him about it and he said he has never even heard of it.
i know it is real because it is in the game but what were some battles it fought in, some pictures, etc.

IIRC both were never mass produced with only around 200 being made of each type.

You have been in WWII ? :huh

Some of us were aware of them long before we came here. You're friend clearly doesn't know everything about WWII. I know more than is generally healthy and I only know a minute fraction of the total there is to know.

Agreed and my attitude and experience mimics yours, Karnak.

He probably never heard of the folk band under the same name either.
I remember the wirbel being asked for several times in the forum as clearly something had to be done about the vulching and prolonged vulch vests. I'd wish they'd gone a step further and made 2 VH hangars, at least at the medium and large airbases. As it is now Its fairy easy to keep a VH down and whack out wirbels with bombs tho I think they still make an impact. I must be frank and say I havnt been in an M-16 since they came out.
I didnt even know 200 of both were even made. I thought the number was lower.

I bet that hurt. Did you use a Wirble or an Ostie? :D

Indeed. Was I the only one who built that 1/48 scale Monogram kit of the Wirbel as a kid?
As far as those "minute fractions", I think Widewing is the keeper of all of them. :)

Less than that according to the link I posted.
Both were produced by Ostbau Works in Sagan, Silesia in limited numbers due to the material shortages and the fact that Ostbau Works moved to facilities of Deutsche Eisenwerke in Teplitz and Duisburg due to danger of being overrun by the Soviets. Overall from May to November of 1944, only 87(105) Wirbelwinds were made, contrary to only 44(43) Ostwinds produced from July 1944 to March of 1945.

Hehe... there were fewer Wirlwinds and Eastwinds made than Me262.
Yet... we see them the most of any GV in the game.
AH2's sytem of ENY/OBJ/perks is so screwed and without reason it isnt funny.
Why does the IL-2 have a 25 OBJ score and the Mossi a 10???
Why does the F4U-4 have aOBJ score of 5? It cant do the attack role any better than anything else.
Why does the Fw190A-8 have an ENY score of 31?
Why is the Spit14 perked when the Spit16 is more capable at everthing save for speed above 25k alt???
Etc.
Etc.
None of the scores make sense. It appears as if HTC just threw up some numbers and where they landed is the score that sticks.

That's not really saying that much... there were quite a few 262's made.

the wirble and Osti are frequently mentioned on here when someone tries to tell someone else "that xxxxx wasnt produced enough to merit being included in the game"
same goes for the 3 gun LA7.
-
Keep in mind that the Germans had many AA vehicle types armed with either a quad of 20mm cannons or a single 37mm cannon mount that were produced in large numbers. The Wirbelwind and Ostwind are just rare for being mounted on a Panzer IV chasis. Frankly, that is an inefficient use of a Panzer IV chasis.
-
I had heard of the Wirbel and Osti. The funny one is, the only thing in AH I hadn't heard of before (And theyre in my books too! I dont know how I missed them!) were the Typhie and the Tempest. When I first saw them in the hangar I sat there for a second staring at them going "WTF is that under their nose?!?"
-
Didn't the Germans use old Panzer that were damage for flak Panzer?

That belongs in a sig file somewhere. Anyone have a clue-by-four?

Probably, since of the 44 ostwinds, 36 were converted from existing PzKpfW IV chassis while 7 were produced. The same would probably apply to the Wirbelwind as well. (www.wwiivehicles.com)

They weren't 1/48 - they were 1/32 scale - kinda oddball for armor as the standard scale was 1/35.
Brings back a lot of old memories - ain't no telling how many of those Monogram armor kits I built and blew up. LOL! :devil
My favorite was always the JAGDPANZER. :aok
:salute

You're right. Pardon an old man and his foggy memories :). I never could bring myself to blow mine up. Too much hours invested building and airbrushing. (Now my best friend had a 1/35 scale Panther that got the full M-80 treatment, but that was his, so Screw It :D)

Monogram 1/32 Wirblewind, ya, I built that one back in 1975.
