Don't be so sure you can install xp on a vista laptop.

I just purchased a great laptop with vista64.  Vista 64 will let you format and partition your HD but not install xp.

Call Del....thye are licensed to use XP at this time.  The rest of the manufacturers use only vista.

After a format there will be no trace of Vista64 so clearly this is wrong.

What you can't do is install a dualbooting XP after Vista has been installed. The other way around it works.

I've got the same HP that is 2 months old.  I planned on using it on the road for AH2 but AMD/Vista combo and the game has problems.  I'm more of a pilot than a computer tech so it's maybe user error.

Great computer.  Fli

Take a look at cyberpowerpc.com.  They arent that expensive and all their laptops can handle AH.

I bought mine from them for $747.  They dont sell my particular model anymore but mine has AMD dual core, Nvidia 7600, 2GB of ram, and it has Vista.  Runs AH easily with high res pack, full graph detail, and rarely see frames under 50 as my screen max refresh rate is 60.

The one thing you want to look for make sure the laptop has an actual video card not a built in one like the Intel x3100.

I've been looking at them too dreaming about replacing my aged Sony Vaio.  I stumbled upon this today.  It looks like a pretty nice machine for the price:

I think this is similiar to Hajo's...

now I'm at a loss to why you cant install XP. He says elsewhere U cant even format and load licensed XP from the dos prompt. IMO U should be able to use the HD manf's utility to low level format the drive and then install XP with no problem...

First off it is easy to get around that vista partition problem.   For my dell what I did was go into the BIOS and changed the sate operation to sata, and the lmb cache option to off.   The vista partitions will then be visible and you will then be able to down grade to XP Pro.  You dont have to call Dell to do this.

My two cents,
Arian

Look at Alienware,  I own 2 Aurora M9700's.  first one i bought was thru Alienware's Ebay auctions...............less than 1/3 the cost of new  and was less than a year old.......thing absolutely SMOKES!!!!

the second one i bought was for Jr.  I found it listed on ebay by a private party,  was used for a graphic business in FLA,  less than a year old still had original invoice with a 4,500.00 cost new,   i paid just over 900.00 for it.   It absolutely Smokes too so much I thought about using it for myself but decided to let Jr. keep it.

just a thought for you to consider with laptops.  I always wanted an Alienware going thru ebay made it sooooo cost effective for me.  Good luck!

Other than the laptop being nice a light, I wasn't impressed with this laptop.  My in-laws own two and both came with Vista Home Crapium.  As I posted in another thread, 80+ processes running on these beasts.  Nothing like loading your brand new pick up with a bed full of cement.

My laptop isnt even that slow even with the 70 startup processess ( a lot of them are because I installed programs that have tray icons), think when I first got it, it had processes in the lower 50s.  Still manage to run AH on full graph detail and high res pack and get 60 FR as that is my max refresh rate.

Dont fool yourself. Any machine (and laptops are usually overly encumbered and poorly endowed) can be choked by processes. One day under just the right circumstances on no apparent schedule you will get hit with the slide show of death if you dont trim those processes down.

Just saying...
