Title: A Good Old Bodie 601
Post by: Curlew on November 19, 2008, 03:07:49 PM
For those of you who dont know about Bodie, Ca well let me fill you in. Bodie is a ghost town in the eastern foot hills of the seirra nevada mountians from back in the days of teh california gold rush. It was know as one of the most god less towns around, one lil girl even wrote "Good bye God, Im moving to Bodie" when she found out that her family would be moving there. It was well known for drinking, gamlbing, and prostetution. To put how much into perspective, well 7 brewries worked round the clock to ship in whiskey 100 barrels at a time several times a day, there were 8 respected casinos at its hight, and there were around 60 well know potatos.

Now bodie wasnt only known for its godlessness but also its vigilany justice. A perfect example is a story I remember, a miner was badly injured in a mining accidnt which caused him to become very mentally slow but also landed him a huge payoff form the mining company. Well a local potato procedded to mary this many to get to his money. So one night this couple was down at the local saloon when a young frenchman proceeded to ask this woman to dance, so she asnwered yes and they proceeded to dance very dirty much to the dismay of everyone in the room. The frenchman proceeded to take said woman home with him much to the dislike of her husband who confronted them outside the saloon. Well basicly the frenchman got his gun out faster and shot the poor fellow. Both him and the woman were quickly picked up by the local sheriff and put in jail to await trail. But this wast good enough for the local townfolk, they went down, marched in to the jail and snatched up the two prisoners then dragged them down to an emptey lot which just so happened to be next door to the saloon where it all went down. The mob proceeded to go into the saloon and voted that they would hang them both, the man for shooting the husband, and the woman for commiting adultry (almost). Well within 15 mins of this descission they had rigged up gallows and the two were swingin dead.

The point of the story is that the mobs that used to do this vigilanty justice were called 601s. 6 for 6 feet under, 0 for no judge, and 1 for 1 rope. Basicly they would hang a bunch of people for anythign from the serrious story i just told you to petty things like injuring a horse or stealing. It got so bad that they would look for minor things to catch you on so that they could hang you. And this has got me wondering, is that what we are doing today with all the shade killer stuff? Dont get me wrong I dont like that people shade kill, but what comes of it, yes they get a highger ranking, but what do you get with a higher rank? NOTHING! The only practicly use for it is cv control, and even thats not even that important, yes there is prestige that comes with it but according to master sociologist weber: prestige is only an idea created by society to compensate for something that lacks the two other major "p's" (property and power). Yah they get perks, but the people that are doing this are mostly flying high eny planes and only flying against thier shade, sounds like no use to me.  So what they shade killed, all this means is they wasted thier time not killing or preventing you from doing what you want to do, they wasted thier time! And so what if they bump down your rank a notch, frankly i consider myself a good pilot for any month that I can end up in the top %10. So why worry about it, why waste your time and effort sorting through a ton of pilots just to find these guys, thats not what the new stats page is about, nor this game for this matter. The same people I see yelling on 200 about peopel gaming the game so they can get a higher rank are the same people on here yelling at those who shade kill who when eliminate gives the figer pointer a higher rank, does this mean you just gamed the game....yup.

Folks, keep it real, this 601-witchhunting garbage has got to stop, instead spend the time going online and flying, youll be much happier and their wont be that much hate int he community

Gotta have a checks and balances system somehow, anyone with a shade account is cheating.  Cheating is lying.  Lying is deceiving.  There is no place for liars and deceivers in a game like this.

Yep and the OP doesn't really get the point behind these witch hunts.  It has nothing to do with score or perks and everything to do with maintaining some integrity of the game.  These people are basically cheating, regardless of their reasons and that's why they are being virtually tarred and feathered.

Shifty said it the best when he posted this in another thread.

Seems to me both the score matters and the score doesn't matter crowds should be equally critical of people that practice this kind of behavior.
Integrity does matter, be it in real life or how you conduct yourself in a game. This is pretty much the AH equivalent of forgery or passing a bad check. When you hear the old timers missing the good old days, actions like this are one of the reasons why. It's the tardlettes doing this crap you should spend your criticism on.

It's not like it was ever hard to figure out who did this before.

Well...

Dear friends, maybe it's time to look at Curlew's stats to find out what reason he has to protect the witches....

But all kidding aside now, it has been said before: It's all about integrity... not so much as integrity of individual persons as the integrity of this game as a whole.

Scores are part of the game deliberately put into existance by HTC.  Many players do not care about them (that's fine), but also many players do use them, either just as a tool to judge their own advancement or even as a major incentive for playing (again that's fine).

It is in our interest as a community to keep this game "clean", so everybody can continue playing it regardless what his style is.

And it becomes even more important if you consider that it's mostly about PERKS, not just score.

Some planes are perked for a reason, especially new players have to work hard for a long time to get the points needed to fulfill their little dream of flying  a 262... and then they learn about how some dolts are gaining those perks by vulching their shades

Personally I simply don't want this sim to be known for such things

Oh, btw: The new stats page has actually taken away some of the unique "witchhunt" aspects from this whole thing.
Real witchhunting is characterised by unsubstantial accusations and gossip, impossible to really prove and more important: Impossibe to defend against.
Countless times I have been accused of killing my shades, especially back in the day in the EW arena. That's true withchunting, creating an atmosphere of suspicion & doubt and "spreading the word"
Now it's easy: If you accuse someone, you have to back it up. Put up or shut up. :)

I agree with Lusche but would like to add where do we draw the line.  Switching sides to run GV sups to your turreted wirlis squaddie in town?  PM'ing CV locations across country?  The list goes on.  Best it be known "infringements" will be dealt with 601 style.

And I agree, this is all garbage, but wasting time looking through a bunch of high ranking people to try and find shades is a little on the ridiculous side.
