Speakin' as an Amurrican, I'd like to see a more than one channel that could be tuned to regardless of country. Frankly, one of AH's greatest resources is its foreign players, but, for good or bad, channel 1 is viewed as an "English only" channel. This means that if folks from different squads want to speak in their own language, they have to be on the same side. In turn, this may be a cause of some of the wicked imbalances we see in non-US hours. In any case, as a member of an Italian squad, I can attest that the reception granted to folks like myself instructing newbies on channel 1 how to not only change the radio, but also the country, in a language other than English, has not always met with a positive reception.
Whaddaya say? can we see it sometime?

Another thing close to subject:
Implementing non US letters.
I want to be able to punch out that famed battelcry on top of my hammerhead: Rødgrød med fløde!!
And besides it will make chatting possible on country channels for us scandinavians and germans - and I suspect several others.

Hmm I'm a 'Murikin to and I have no problem with people speaking whatever language they want on Channel 1. If people don't like it, that's what .squelch is for!

Just use any channel from 200-299, everyone can read them.
To instruct a newbie, without clogging up channel 1, just tune a private channel to him.

Heh, we were flamed for using channel1 1 for a eneral chat thing the other day. quote "this is a flight sim, stop talking soccer".
Also heard people say "please speak English here".
Is there any official language or are we to be allowed to speak freely whatever language we choose, and by picking any other than English, be free to insult Americans without fear of reprisals? (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

To me its just common curtsy to speak a language everyone can understand on an open channel. AH is a US based sim and using any other language then English is to me like talking behind the back of everyone that doesn’t understand.
I don’t have a huge problem with it, I just think its rude and I find it embarrassing when anyone use Swedish on ch 1 for anything other then a short greeting.

I think I would like it if I could hear the other nationalities accents and languages... The only time that I have ever squelched someone who was typing another language they had been going on for about 20 minutes. I got the feeling they were just being rude so I squelched em both...But that is once since October....I am sure they have both squelched me too....

LOL (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) Been there, done that.
I have asked non-English typing players to not use channel 1 for chat. I asked politely, and several times have gotten the response similiar to "F*** Off". All their other text was not English, but this amazingly came out nicely in English. This rather confused me, but I got the idea. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)
I only read and speak English. Foreign languages appear as gibberish to me. It is simply annoying, mostly because I am not used to it. Realizing the problem lies with myself and not the non-English player(s).
Now, I simply squelch those players immediately and stay out of it altogether. It is not really worth the trouble of attempting to be polite and being misunderstood. Then to be insulted as a result.
For your comment regarding the insulting of "Americans". (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Well, I'm not absolutly sure about the "South Americans" or the "Central Americans". I think that they insult us "North Americans" as good as the rest of the world does.
As for the "Canadian North Americans" and the "Mexican North Americans" they insult us "United States North Americans" with equal fervor as do we insult them back. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
However IMO, as a general rule most of the world is very comfortable at insulting us "United States North Americans". Don't worry, we are used to it. For myself, my thick skulled head is also covered with thick skin.
After the world needs or requests our Markets, our Military, our Money or our Mana. How quickly they forget, after their immediate problem or crisis is solved. Then resume the insulting of us with the greatest of glee. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

When I was peacekeeping in Cypress, I spent a night or two in the local Turk canteen and got into some real lively discussions(I can be annoying even through an interpretter.)
Anyway this one turk guy insisted that the US Navy should show up invade the whole island and settle the thousands year old tiff in Cypress for the locals. In an afternoon he said. He was furios that the US did not do so. I was amazed that he didnt see how rediculous that was. Too much Raki I guess, the more common view on the Greek side of the line was that the US should just kill the Turks for them.
Americans can be rediculous but they do get some awful bumb raps....

Mino, how about another of the major languages then, such as Spanish? Or chinese, for that matter.
Would it not be rather uncourteous to disallow those who do not speak your language from communicating on channel 1, for the sole purpose of it irritating you? After all, if there's only one or two, the squelch command would be quite sufficient in this case.
English is the main language and will remain so, and I frankly think it is pretty rude to demand that only your own language is spoken because it's the only one you understand. I enjpooy watching the Spanish and italians communicate, even though I understand no Italian and only got a limite Spanish vocabulary. Reminds me that it's a global community crossing many cultures, but one with a common passion. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
My comments about America-bashing was meant as a joke. There are some aspects of American culture I utterly despise, and others I admire. Same goes for my own culture, which in some regards is quite opposite to the American one (for example, here "flaunt it if ya got it" is considered bragging and a more humble approach is more succesful, whereas in the US it's more common. Which is good in one sense, but bad in another (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)). I live in northern Jutland, and we're famous for our understatements. Guy wins 20k on a lottery ticket and when asked about what he feels, he says "well, it'll put bread on my table, so it's not all bad".
Just an example of a difference.
However, I am annoyed if channel 1 is overflowed with languages I cannot understand a word of. But an occasional break from the English is quite rewarding in my opinion (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
I will also respect others requests and if asked to speak English instead of Danish of Swedish, I'll do so.
There is no official policy on the matter of language in ch1 coming from HTC?

SrSanta;
LOL (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) Got ya!
You are right, this is an international game. It is gibberish only to me. Any one who pays their $30 per month should have equal priveledges.
Re-read my post. I decided that the fault lay with myself, not non-English speaking players. I changed my ways, not expecting others to change their ways to mine.
As to the insult phase of my discussion, that was purely for your benefit. I wanted to see if I could hook you and I did. I was teasing more that a tad. Consider it how I intended it to be, only gibberish. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
Insult me at will, my only language is United States North American West Coast Non-Chest Thumping Tell It Like It Is Slow Enough To Understand English.
Good Luck! (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Hey Pongo, when were you on Cyprus?
I'm stuck in Nicosia until the end o' June (minus a week in KBH, so watch yer tongue Santa).
And yeah, many Greek Cypriots believe the US should solve their problems (in between spying on them).
-
Mino and others - it's nothing to do with privileges or AH being US based sim.
Someone mentioned it above - it's simply polite in a crowded room to speak a language most people can understand. It's so happens it's English. If it was Chineese/Russian/Jutlandian (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) etc - so it would be. But it's English - so let's just respect other people and keep Ch 1 as English-mostly channel. I know there's a Russian channel, there must be others too.
OTOH, the world's population of jerks seems to be on the rise and a few may just drift into AH - statistics I'm sure (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif). Thank God for .squelch xxxx (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif).

I dunno, I know just enough words in a few languages to read some pretty interesting insults from time to time. I enjoy it. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

True, it may be polite to converse in English, but in AH, not everybody can speak (or write) English. Should ask them to shut up? Should I consider someone rude for asking for help in a language that isn't English, because English is not among the languages that that person knows?
-
dinger - don't mix asking for help and yapping and yapping and yapping non-stop and on top of everything in flipping caps! Oh... Did I mention perfect English when swearing?

Dinger, oh, Copenhagen eh?
Tell ya what; you need to walk up to the dudes on HD's wearing jackets saying "Nåh, Bandidos ga' jer godt med tæsk eh?".
Then you walk up to the dudes wearing jackets saying "Bandidos" and say "Sikke nogle tøssedrenge I er, det er da ikke underligt at HA sparker jeres røv hele tiden".
That way, you'll get all the chicks.
