Post by: df54 on November 23, 2008, 06:09:42 PM

trying to learn p38l for an american ride and noticed someting really strange.  with ct off and dive flaps on i can loop forever with
no energy loss no stall buffet at top of loop. Is this real world or gamey.

well seeing this is a game, and NOT real world, I could take a guess  :D Yes the 38 can loop almost forever, but don't tell anyone ok  :aok

Are you sure you're using just dive flaps and not the regular flaps?  Dive flaps alone will not cause the P-38 to loop endlessly, they don't provide enough lift and they're only effective at high speeds.  The dive flaps do not work like regular flaps and provide lift, they instead change the the way the air flows over the wing (basic explanation) to ease pulling out of a high speed dive by pitching the nose up.

However, with normal flaps, you can endlessly loop any of the P-38s.

not using flaps but unknowingly had elevator trim maxed.

Ideally, you want to use your flaps to get your plane to loop.  The flaps in the P-38 generate enough lift that you can just use those to loop your plane.  As you come over the top, lower flaps and as your nose swings down, raise the flaps.  This will generate enough energy that when you're on the downside of the loop, you'll have enough energy to loop again.  Just repeat those steps and you'll loop endlessly.

Unfortunately, I no longer have the film but leviathn had made me one showing how well the flaps work in the P-38, think it was around 10 minutes long and that entire time he was just using flaps to loop, no other stick input.

I imagine that this could be a very effective combat tactic in one on one encounters

am I wrong?

Depending on the situation and the plane you're fighting against, yes, it can be an effective tactic.
