[MoM #2] "Stacked Steel" AAR
(http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb209/StracCop/MoM02560x288AAR.gif)
FORCES FIELDED (THOSE WHO JOINED THE POSTED MISSIONS)
Many others spawned manually so they could use their preferred skin
so the actual number of aircraft we fielded is approximately 30% greater
than the numbers reported.
1st Combat Bombardment Wing
16/25 91st Bomb Wing (B-17G) CO: Tarstar (LCA)
18/25 381st Bomb Wing (B-17G) CO: 96Delta (LCA)
16/25 398th Bomb Wing (B-17G) CO: Hornet79 (LCA)
TOTAL: 50 pilots (150 bombers)
We've done better than this during non-MoM missions organized
during gameplay. I really hope that these numbers grow for
the next MoM.
67th Fighter Wing
14/20 364th Fighter Group (P-38L) CO: Hightone (LCA)
16/20 352nd Fighter Group (P-47D-25) CO: GGhost (79th Fighter Group)
16/20 356th Fighter Group (P-51D) CO: Dakone (LCA)
10/10 3rd Scout Force (P-51D) CO: A8popysd (Aces & 8's)
TOTAL: 56 fighters

SUMMARY
Our launch was troubling as we relied on the game clock
to stagger our launches. Unfortunately, I think it
it ran fast so the timing was off from the mission's
inception. We had intended to launch 3 groups with
one minute between them, then form up and assemble our
vertical stacking formation for maximum defensive
effect. But instead of the staggered launches
we ended up spawning all over each other. It was a mess.
Once we got airborne and proceeded to target,
enemy aircraft were located by the 3rd Scout Force.
The enemy force detected was already higher than the scouts
that had launched 10 minutes before the bombers. Not so good.
These early intercepts consisted mostly of Me-262
fighters and Ta-152's. Once located, we vectored in our
fighter interceptor group, the 356th FG who went to
work carving up the enemy force with great success.
Some of the 262's got through as did several Ta-152
and other fighters but those early arrivals faired poorly,
with most losing their lives in twisted Luftwaffe
steel. I don't think that any of them landed any kills.
Those that got past the fighter sweeps died in the
bomber stream or at the hands of our close escort groups.
All along, the bombers were pretty strung out after our botched
launch but we attempted to close up after the first enemy
wave was beaten back. But, while we were grouping up and at
about 25K, another enemy force hit us from our right flank!
The first bomb group in the force was the 381st Bomb
Group (GREEN) under the command of 96Delta. This group
bore the brunt of the enemy's initial assaults and
suffered horrific casualties, losing approximately
80% of its bombers. The remaining bomb groups, the
91st Bomb Group (RED) and the 398th Bomb Group (BLUE)
faired a bit better and tried to close as fast as
they could to join GREEN group to offer defensive
assistance.
We recalled the 356th FG in their P-51's to help us and our
close escorts deal with this new threat. The 356th FG and
our close escort forces, the 364th FG in their P-38's and the
352nd FG with their P-47's, took them on as they vied for
access to the bombers. Our fighter groups did an
absolutely marvelous job of denying enemy fighters their
preferred angles of attack and stayed with us the whole
way until forced to rtb due to low fuel.
A most outstanding performance!
After we slaughtered these two initial waves of resistance
we were only met with token, sporadic and unorganized
opposition during the rest of our trip to target.
We resumed our climb, attaining 30K where the B-17
survivors of the earlier attacks grouped up and we
finally coalesced into a single unified bomb group.
Tallying up our losses, we still had about one-half to
one third of our original bomber force available so we
proceeded to our first target, a Knight city. Again,
enemy resistance was essentially broken and we easily
delivered our ordnance on the city, reducing it to 4%.
We then turned to attack our secondary target, a Knight
refinery. Again, limited resistance was encountered
and we reduced the refinery to 48% capacity.
We began our descent to 139 which was under heavy enemy
attack but our refueled fighters were re-upping from
there to join us and as a result, they busted up the
Knight attempt to take 139 with ease, securing the
base for our safe recovery.
After landing we posed from some photos, remembered
our fallen comrades who fought bravely at our side
and then busted open a bottle of champagne and saluted
each other in victory!
All things considered, I had a great time although I
was frustrated at our poor start. When we met the
first waves of enemy resistance at 20K I thought that,
if that level of opposition persisted, none of us
would even make it to the primary target! Despite
the poor start, and due to the cooperation of the
bombers and the bomb group commanders, we were able
to salvage the operation.
In spite of these hardships, we exacted a terrible toll
the enemy. Hardly any Me-262's or Ta-152's made it out of
the bomber stream without damage. Those who loitered
in the bomber gunner's sites too long never lived to
regret it. The '262 perkie harvest was prodigious!
THANK YOU!
Let me thank everyone, both friend and foe alike, for
battling it out in this Mother of all Missions event!
I want to especially thank all the Rook pilots who
participated for remaining VOX disciplined. It was
all and more than I could have ever asked or hoped for. :salute
We have learned still more lessons from this battle
and I believe that next time, we will do even better!
I invite everyone who participated to share their own
observations, constructive comments and thoughful suggestions
in this topic.
The debrief/AAR after the first MoM yielded many suggestions
that were all incorporated into this MoM's execution.
I hope that your comments this time around will be as
useful. ;)
Thanks again for participating!
David

P.S. Post your screenies if you got any! :O
P.P.S. Oh, and for those who are wondering why we didn't attack
the Bishops this time around, examine this map. We would have
had to run a gauntlet of Bishop fighters coming at us from
every direction. That would have amounted to a suicide
mission. I actually wanted to hit the Bishops this time, but
the tactical disposition of the map made that impossible.

i heard great things about it, wish i could have been there.
-
Typical 8th AF hogging the spotlight again, and forgetting the 9th AF 38s that were there to cover them.

Yowzers, very impressive, when is the next MoM? I want to be a part of it.
-
Had alot of fun flying with Corky Del shuffler and joined by a couple other 80th guys and SAPPers. I think a good time was had by all.
:salute Delta had a great time keep up the good work!
-
I was like the only bomber formation those 262's were aiming at when the came at 20k, i died with in 30 seconds and i was in the heart of the formation, i have no SS's to post because i died so fast, fighter cover was poor.
Then i logged for the night knowing waiting 1 month was for nothing.
Sorry Delta :salute

fighter cover poor? :huh :huh
I couldnt even make a run at buffs without getting jumped. Nice realism
until I got jumped by 2 38s, a 190 and a Ki84 :furious
-
JG11 (and friends) upped with roughly 15 Ta152's, a handful of Fw190D-9's, and Bf109G-14's, and a schwarm of 110's. We employed a single 262 scout.
Other than the TT snafus and the German rides being flown by Rooks, it was a total blast. When we initially turned into the attack it was quite a sight to see.
My hat's off to the Rook escort pilots who did a much better job this time around, making life very difficult on my jagdfliegers. :salute
WTG Delta. You are adding a much needed break from the usual MA landgrab. I salute, and support you wholeheartedly.
-
Did the best I could but it seemed like I was always looking up at fighters again. When we made it to 20,000' they were already coming in at 30,000'. The P-38L is actually very effective due to the fact, if you need discipline which I dont, you'll start shaking apart should you try and selfishly dive with a 190, 262, Jug, or Pony. You can make up your Alt fairly well, tho it was hard due to the amount of cons. It seems no matter what we do we'll always have enemy cons into us before we get to target altitude. Lets face it,call em side switchers or whatever you want, but they are up in their 190s and 262s, climbing, and heading to us, long before we even spawn.
I guess it dont matter. Its always fun and a big salute to Delta and everyone involved. It was just frustrating to see cons coming into the stream from 30k and not being able to do much to help them. I thought the P-38L discipline was great and have no doubt the other escorts did their best to stay with the stream.

<S> Delta
The MoM was great and I had no problem donating my 262 to the cause. I was the 2nd 262 on the bombers, the 2 forward sweeps were easy to avoid when going that fast. You guys were packed so tight i downed 6 bombers on the first pass, man what a sight to see. 2 more passes and I was too slow get out alive, the escorts did much better this time in keeping the bombers covered(and not just from space even).

Thank you delta for a very entertaining time last night. I have but one suggestion and that is that the P51s get the 6 gun package next time. The weight savings was not a factor. The 47s might have been a better choice for me given their high altitude performance and gun package. This is one of the few occasions where you see things over 20,000 and I think it really made the airwar come alive.

Great flight, although not part of the mission package several of us SAPPER's upped our 38 Medium Bombers to fly support. I thought fighter support for the mission did a great job. Myself, CorkyJr, Blixen, Shuffler and Delirium Free lanced it above and around the bombers. TA152's at 28K are a handful, especially when you can't see them until they are withing 1k of you. Good times though, can't wait for the next one.
-
Looks like you fellas had a great time, meanwhile Mrs itunes decided we had to go looking for a new xmas tree .........
-
:salute 96Delta.. had a blast in my p51..
I only have two suggestions:
1) get the bombers into a more tighter formation
2) After the p51 figters cross the pond, we were all running low on fuel...Need atleast two more fighter wing to cover will some of us refuel and rearm.
Awesome mission man...This is the direction I really want to see this game go into.. Your mission really makes a big diference.. :rock
BTW, the bombers almost didn't have base A139 to land, there was a massive 110 raid there just minutes from you bombers touching down, It was a good thing all the fighters were there refueling and rearming..
Looking forward for the next mission :salute Jedi

Our squad (TFC) switched to Nit and flew with JG11 in Ta152's As stated, the Allied formation was quite a site when we turned towards it to attack. The escort did a great job of protecting the buffs, it was very hard to get anywhere near them! Got a P51, and then a P38, but ended up getting chased away from the formation while engaged with these two fights. Trailed alongside the stream and grabbed again to get up to 30K+ and managed to re-enage right before the buffs hit the city. Got 2 B17's that were trailing the main group this time, but collied with the wreckage of one losing part of my wing, so rtb'd and managed to prang her on the runway!
Really great mission and it seemed realistic from the Luftwaffe force perspective as one would have expected it to be in 44/45 when the allies had huge numbers and it was all you could do to get back to your base alive! Great fun overall, would love to be able to do this every night :)
Hopefully it will not be long before the next one! Well done gentlemen!

i heard great things about it, wish i could have been there.
Neary i was one of the first and F77 to burn to the ground but i did rack up 1 262 kill :lol.
Be lucky u whernt in the Green group we where slaughtered.
-
Great MoM. 353rd up in 109s, 152, 110 and 262. The escort was all over me but somehow i got into the bomber formation taking out 3 of them.
-
Apparently, the escort did better than I thought they did. Back in my '47 with the rest of the 352nd, I was plain BORED! At the point we went feet wet, I had only seen six fighters enter con range. I thought that was all they had sent! I barely used 400 rounds of ammo, and my opinion was that the jugs were useless, due to the 'weak' enemy resistance, but as it turned out, the ponies and lightnings were getting all the action! :lol I just wish I could have seen a bit more action, Especially since my first actual taste of combat vs an enemy fighter was after the city when I had 6 gallons (NOT MINUTES, US GALLONS OF AVIATION FUEL) of gas left and somebody ended up on my six and sent me to the tower. I was a little miffed, but a good way to tell the mission is going well is if the close cover fighters and the gunners are getting bored. :aok
:salute I salute the pilots that actually MADE it thought the fighter screen, I think the performance of the P51's in the first MoM gave them a reputation of being ineffective, and I think that cost a lot of fighters their perks. Overall, I think that the jugs (especially myself) wanted to see a bit more action, or at least see a bit more altitude before the fighters hit.
-
Thanks for the comments guys. :salute
macerxgp,
I have a plan for the next time that will definitely get you
and all the other fighter escorts some action.
The problem this time was the botched launch.
That messed up our whole operations plan and
resulted in a caterpillar of bombers with the lead
seeing the majority of the early and most intense action.
I think we have a handle on that now.
Its all a learning process. We improved significantly
this time over our inaugural performance. The next time
will be better still.
And brother, I wish you were up front with me when all
the action started! I was in the GREEN bomb group
and dude, we needed help up thar!
Sorry you didn't see any action though and the same
for anyone else who felt like they missed out. Just stick
with us as we iron out the kinks.
The next MoM will be another Strategic Bomber Mission
only this time we will be using B-24J Liberators and the
same fighter aircraft for escort and "other" duties.
Hang in there guys, we're just getting started! :t
We need your patience and continued participation while
we work out the kinks.

Need to do this twice a month, only 12 a year now!
Don't want to burn people out zoozoo.
I'm watching the participation levels.
When I see them climbing steadily and can
see increasing interest I will look into the
possibility of running them with more
frequency.
Thanks for the vote of confidence though. ;)

Your doing a heck of a job Delta, well done, keep up the good work :aok

I had a great time. Just about half of my 38's got shot down over the channel of death right before we got into bish territory. That's where the NME seemed to number its highest. It can be hard to stay in with the group sometimes and not chase cons, but I thought this time the 38's did a great job staying with the bomber group protecting the buffs the best we could. It was hard because it seemed like every time I turned a 152 or 109 would pop up in icon range almost out of nowhere. <S> to the Lightning Pilots. I hope there will be 38's in the next one. I was shot down after the fuel refinery was hit, but I only had 18 gallons of fuel left so I doubt I would of made it back to base.
<<S>> to the bomber pilots. These missions wouldn't work without you guys. I hope you had fun and will join us for the next one. :salute
-
I'll be interested to see what happens if the layout of the map favors one target over another and we see a massive shift of players from one country to another a few minutes before launch... Be a shame if Rook ENY penalties prevented the bomber of choice being available...
Just a thought...
-
I wasn't involved in the mission, I had forgotten about it honestly, but was part of the take attempt on 139.
It was pure chance that our mission and your mission collided. There was no talk on the mission channel about the bomber mission. As we were NOE flying to the base, I saw the dar bar growing, thinking that we were busted. I had no idea it was the refuel base for the bomber mission.
When we arrived at the town and started taking out, there was no inital resistance, but it sure came quick when the town exploded.
Even though our attempt failed, I had a great time.
Thanks for making it a challange.
-
96Delta, :salute
Utterly enjoyable! Was in Blue group and had our share of Bandits! Although I lost a buff before reaching the primary, I was able to make it in with the other two. Didn't do a lot of damage to the Knight city, but I was able to land 3 kills! I must say that this (MoM) is just about as much fun as the scenarios have been.
Keep up the good work and I'll be waiting for the next one!
:salute Nutzoid
-
do the MoM's always fall on tuesdays? if so i ampacked every tuesday and would have to be a lte joiner if i participated. :salute sounds like a bunch of fun...maybe i can snag some of the next one.
-
was a good time :salute
-
A8Popysd here... glad I had an opertunity to fly out ahead with a small flight of fighters, and we did very well for a short time...
However by the time the bombers arrived over the mainland my boys where low on fuel, and all over the sky.
The Ta's came streaming in above is, but a significant portion chose to engage fighters, and thus where kept away from the bombers.
Myself I bought it at 31000ft when one of the buggers roped me.... :frown:
Thank you, and though it wasnt perfect, id love to do it all over again real soon <S>96Delta :aok

NOV. 27, 2008
352ND FIGHTER GROUP
AFTER ACTION REPORT
MOM MISSION: STACKED STEEL
NOV.25, 2008
ACTING COMMANDER OF THE 352ND
GGHOST, COL. USAAF
AAR - STACKED STEEL
Had a blast doing P47 fighter escort cover. This was better organized then the FSO ever could be. The problem with the launch was only minor and we can work thru the headaches of Aces High II clocks next time. The Vox chatter was fairly low.
We cruised at a comfortable 20 to 30K hitting the Knights city and fuel depot. I got 1 kill on a FW152 and 2 assist on couple other FW152. We where facing ME262's and FW190's and FW152's by the half dozens at a time. We got hit hard early, but we still made it to 2 targets thanks to the P-51s up front. The P-38L did fairly good job down low.
352nd P-47s had the top cover pretty well. We did have to engage the FW190 down below bombers. But we quickly regain order and climbed to altitude above the bombers.
I asked some of the P-47s to circle the bombers and patrol the back bomber force. I myself cruised to the last bomber group then worked back towards the front. I did this to oversight any gaps in escort covered. Some enemy did manager to get thru. But was met with escorts and our big friends (B-17) putting some lead on the enemy.
I was glad to see that not everyone engaged and merged onto one enemy aircraft.
Good job P-47s pilots. I was also reassured to see the pilots knew what their job was by using wingman tactics and only couple of pilots at a time was engaging the enemy planes. By using wingman tactics the P-47 pilots bounced the enemy off or destroy them on the spot. Check 6s was being use properly and things seemed too worked smoothly.
I had to land due to the fact that there was so many targets to go hit, so I ran short on ammo & fuel was force to land. After landing, then returning to flight again to meet the bombers on a return flight to base. I was looking around, you could see some targets available. By then the City and Fuel depot was smashed by the B-17 bomber groups. I return to the bomber flight to escort them back from their targets and had to fight my way back to the B-17s.
All in all this was a real fun time. And there was no arrogance from some of the Aces High II CM staff. We flew real planes that most pilots like to fly. Not always the early war pacific fights. Real planes with allot of horsepower.
This was members coming together to fly and fight in Aces High II combat simulator. No major bull just some flight path and a 20 minute in house commanders meeting. We discussed where everyone should be at what alt and launching in what order. Then we flew the mission. If this catches on, then the FSO could be in a world of hurt.
One word would described the MOM is "AWESOME!"
The sight to see 60+ bombers layered with 4 large groups of fighters.
I would like to also thank the enemy fighter pilots that came to fight. They provided the extra effect of a true WWII theme to the fight.
Looked like WWII 8th Air Force bomber flight from Britain to Germany with escorts battling out with the enemy in a not so friendly sky.
Totally Awesome!!
On behalf of the 79th Fighter Group members, we enjoyed flying with other fighters of the Rooks. Thanks for inviting us to join in the mission.
Thanks for all the your hard work 96Delta.
<S> to Skuzzy for providing us with Aces High II and maintaining the combat simulator.
Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving.

96Delta, very sorry I missed this one. Thanks very much for your work in setting these up! :salute
Looking forward to the next MoM.
-
I had a blast - excellent job again Delta and to everyone who participated. Seemed like the fighters had a little more discipline about engaging bandits and staying high with the bombers.
I winged up with DakOne in the '51's and even though my mic was out we still managed to fly very well together.
Had fun keeping the fighters off of the bombers, Dak & I downed a 190. My fuel dropped to bingo slightly before the bomb group reached target, so I diverted to 139 - during my descent I encountered a lone 109 that I quickly dispatched.
I think these events will only get better, looking forward to the next one! :salute

Very nice stuff guys!
Thanks for all the comments! :rock
GGhost, I got your email.
Very glad to hear of your transfer. :) Could certainly use
some more good sticks and squadrons to help us out.
And excellent AAR sir. Thank you for taking to time to post it! :salute
And thanks for the screencap! I collect all the MoM screenies
I can get so I can use them for promo materials down the line.
Planning has already begun on MoM3 but I doubt we will be
running it in December. The schedule we have been
running on would put the next one smack dab in the middle
of the Christmas holidays which is less then ideal so we will
be pushing it to January.
Thanks again to all who participated. <S> :salute

David, 96Delta, This was my first time with the Rooks and the MOM's mission and I totally enjoyed it to the most! Thanks for your hard work in planning such a large mission. I was with the 79th Fighter Group under Col GGHOST flying the P-47 at 31,000 over the bombers and was able to take out 1-109 and 1-190 with 1 ass. Each enemy was trying very hard to pull me down to a lower alt. without susses. Each time I would get about 2 thousand feet below the bombers I would break off and climb back to my assigned alt. and press on to the target area. Sorry to say but my last combat fight with a 190 I ended up going straight in without any responce from my controll stick. I just wanted to thank you for the chance to be a part of the MOM's and to fly with such professionals of the game. Popason, of the 79th Fighter Group. I salute you and your commanders :salute ps: I would like the chance to fly the MOM's 3 mission
-
Thanks again for all the comments and encouragement guys.
It really means alot to me that people enjoy these MoM
events. I'm hoping that it will add something new to the
Titanic Tuesday wash-rinse-repeat cycle. :)
I need to emphasize that I have no idea of how well
received these things are if people do not join the
posted missions. I am tracking the participation
in MoM by the number of pilots who join them through
the mission editor.
So far we are tracking even with last time but I
am hoping to see the numbers grow as we continue
the MoM campaign.
So please join the posted missions if you can.
I know that means no preferred skin (I really wish that
HiTech would change the Mission Editor to allow it).
Still, the number of 'joiners' is all I have to gauge
the relative health of the thing. So please help me by
joining the posted missions.
Thanks!
Next one looks like it will be on Tuesday, January 13, 2009.
Happy New Year! :rofl
-
Its good to hear the success of the MoM#2! Unfortunately I had to work late Tuesday night... I hope that I am able to participate the next time around! :salute 96Delta for all your hard work and effort you put into this!
