Title: What do you use your instruments for.
Post by: infowars on November 26, 2008, 11:26:54 AM
I use the speedometer to tell if I'm in the envelope or not.

I use altimeter for obvious reason.

G meter I some time reference in a fight to see if I am unloaded.

I use the flap indicator to see if I forgot to disengage them.

Fuel gauge I keep my eye on always.

I do not use artificial horizon

I do not use yaw and bank indicators.

Anyway.  The reason I'm curious is because this is the first flying game I ever have paid attention to gauges.  Kinda cool.  Adds to realism.

Mostly just to check gear or flaps status and ammo count.
I almost never look at the speedometer, G meter and other stuff.

But when flying & fighting at very high altitudes, the artificial horizon can get quite important...

I use my instruments to , erm , what are instruments?

I do not use yaw and bank indicators.

When possible, I try to pay attention to the yaw indicator.  Uncoordinated flight is a big energy leak, so I when I want to retain energy I try to stay coordinated.  Combat trim can cause the need for left-rudder in slow, looping maneuvers where you'd normally need a little right-rudder to stay coordinated.  I didn't notice that until I watched a lot of film and saw what my instruments were doing while I had been paying attention to the bandit.

I don't really pay to much attention to my instruments, I can feel what's going on if that makes any sense.

Ofc I will always look down when the opportunity arises to double check.

I use the speedomiter and altimeter to tell how hard of a G I can pull b4 blacking out=p

I reference my KIAS indicator very frequently, especially pre-merge and whenever I can during a dogfight.  I like to know how much E I have before cranking in a maneuver- especially before I do any vertical maneuver.  In fact, I rarely point my nose up without checking airspeed first.

I reference alt for cruise, but rarely worry about alt once in a fight unless I'm looking to regain E or disengage.

I use the speedometer and climb rate guage on climb-out to minimize my time to the combat area and arrive at the alt I want when I get there.

I use the boost and RPM guages when I need to conserve fuel.  I also use the boost guage on climb out to understand the plane's "sweet spot" in terms of performance at what altitudes (particularily usefull at less than full boost/rpm).

I use the compass mostly when I'm in bombers.  I've got the degree headings pretty well figured out for most targets I want to hit.

I use the tailhook light on CV based aircraft to make sure I hit the right key combo and the tailhook is deployed before landing.

My eye is always on the fuel guage and the ammo remaining.

Once I'm engaged I don't watch anything.  I fly entirely by feel.

i enjoy watching the speedometer, its always nice to know just how fast my wingless and tailless craft is moving just at the moment of terminal impact with the dirt! i seriousely think i have managed to break a few air ground speed records!

i almost never fly "inside". i fly "outside" 99% of the time, and occasionally come back "inside" to verify what i see outside.
in a fight, i never ever come inside, as that would mean taking my eyes off the enemy.

WOW... I was unaware that the Aces High Aircraft were equipped with speedometers. I am usually well informed by my AIRSPEED INDICATOR!

Once I'm engaged I don't watch anything.  I fly entirely by feel.

same here. if my flaps arnt coming out, i may take a quick split second peak at the speedometer just to see how much more R i need to bleed, but otherwise i fly by feel in a fight also. when landing i belly land on airfields, so i use full flaps to really bleed speed, on a CV i use the hook indicator to see my hook is out, and my flaps to bleed the E, speedometer for me to see my speed (again) and gear to well...what else, land.

G-Meter? What the hell's a G-Meter?
Title: Re: What do you use your instruments for.

I don't fly often. When I do, they only gauge I can see clearly is the one with the little plane that shows if I'm banking or if I'm level... so that's the only one I use.

Everything else I have to zoom, ultra zoom, grab glasses,  then try to decipher what goes with what.  What a hassle.

*edit* oh, that's not entirely true. I do use the rest of the gauges... it's just a hassle to use/see them.

Just for the sake of putting it out there, the proper name for the 'G-Meter' is accelerometer.

the slip meter is an important part of maintaining coordinated flight. If you can use this it can help a fair bit with e retention and avoid unwanted stalls.

Ammo counter and flaps/hook if im landing on cv.

Almost never any of the others.

When I’m low over water in a Goon and need more than a minor course correction, I’m on the gages – Turn Coordinator, Directional Gyro, Vertical Speed Indicator, and Altimeter.

The only time I ever have to worry about flying half a plane is when I'm in one of those US Navy birds. whoopee, I once flew half an FM2 for half an hour straight....

NICE AXE 1boner!!!!

Specifics please

Thanks, Its a Gibson Les Paul double cutaway.

Alot lighter than a standard Les Paul.

My other main rig is a Jackson soloist, but I prefer the Gibson.

I use Marshalls with 2 4x12 cabinets, one for either end of the stage.

That shot was at a friends pig roast we played for free.

Lets see...

Speed gauge I use the most, on merges and in turn fights especially...
Oil pressure with oil leak...
Engine Temperature with radiator leak...
Hook to make sure that thing goes down when I tell it to...

I think those are the only ones I use!

I check my fuel because I am paranoid about running out,
Check ammo and air-speed,
and I check the window to see if there are any targets about.
