Title: WTF is this?!?
Post by: Serenity on November 27, 2008, 08:46:23 PM
Alright, my wireless keyboard crapped out on me today for a spell, and when I was going through the boxes trying to find a troubleshooting guide, I found a cord which had no label, and wasn't mentioned in any of the manuals but it came with the computer. I am really curious as to what it is, because its never been used and the computer works just fine without it. Here are some pictures of it:

i am by no means positive, this is just a guess.

it looks like a stereo jack on one end and possibly a mic on the other. does it have a clip on the brown end? like it would clip to the top of a laptop or maybe a shirt collar clip?

like i said just a guess, let us know what you find out.

Looks to me like it's some kind of LED that plugs into the PC.  You tape the LED in front of the IR receiver window on a VCR and your PC can send basic commands to it, like Play|Stop|Record|etc.

Is your PC by chance an off-the-shelf Window Media Center Edition computer?

ink is correct. With a tv tuner you would put this in front of your cable box and switch channels on your pc with a windows media remote or your keyboard. Google 'IR Blaster.' Usually there is a IR receiver block that the other end plugs into (like maybe that thing in the background of the picture with you holding the plug end?).

Yes, I think it is.

Yep, the black thing in the background is for my computer remote and this cord does fit into a jack on the back. So... um, what exactly does this thingy do that the black box doesn't?
