Well jeez, I just can't understand why that would be filtered. [/sarcasm]

if you meant - snicker - then you need to learn to spell
if you meant to type a word most used to describe black people in a derogatory manner, but hide it with an s in the beginning, you need to grow up and be muted.

From what I can find on Dictionary sites the word in question means the same as "snicker".

From "The Free Dictionary, by Farlex":
S-----r
Noun
a quiet and disrespectful laugh kept to oneself
Verb
to utter such a laugh [variant of snicker]

I'm not playing dumb here - I know why its filtered.

snicker and s-n-i-g-g-e-r are synonyms. snicker is hardly ever used in english although widespread in US english, I always assumed s-n-i-g-g-e-r was also in use in US english (I may be wrong on this.) If you say snicker to a brit they think you are talking about a Mars bar with peanuts in.

I'd just like the pattern matching to ignore s-n-i-g-g-e-r, because its a great (and legitimate) word. maybe its the only example of a legitimate word which has a banned word as part of it? cant think of any other examples off the top of my head.

this is the difference in PERL:

s/nicker/lover/                /* as it is now
s/[^s]nicker/lover/            /* allows snicker through but catches nicker

Even if they took it off the list you would probably either get .reported or end up having to explain it to a bunch of pissed off people every time you used it.  Also you know there are some out there who would use it in a tasteless manner.  Now that I think about it we should have the same filter in game that we have in here. :)

I understand where RT is coming from here. Certainly in English, it is a lot more common to say snig.... instead of a common junk food which the glaswegians deep fry  :lol I would say it without thinking, therefore I could be muted? I probarbly wouldn't know what it was I had said. I second RT's request to let this word through. Crickey, I could come up with hundreds of words that are said in Scots that would probarbly get me banned as well. At least Snig... is recognised by a portion of the community

Rule 12 should be changed to read " All posts should be in the American language", as it does not resemble the Kings English in any way.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled BBS.

The thing about that is...we don't really speak English.  We speak American...a form of English.  People from England speak English  :D

From Wiki

Noun, Singular, snicker,

snicker (plural snickers)

A stifled or broken laugh

Etymology

US variant of the British s-n-i-g-g-e-r, modified in the US due to its resemblance to the racial slur

Never had a snickers bar

SHEESH   SHEESH  (yes, twice)

First, scupcake isn't the N word, nor has it ever been.

Second, this much concern about something like this is a bit dispiriting.  Since there is a simple synonym, and you know it, the problem is what?  If a word is filtered, and you are trying to express a thought, use the friggin synonym.

There are serious problems facing our little world.  HO, Ramming, Bomb and Bail, etc.   Not to mention the roll rate of my P47N in a 425IAS 30deg dive starting from 45deg off horizontal (to right) is almost 1 second off for 395deg escape roll.

Have Fun, Fly Well
