Post by: Ripsnort on August 29, 2001, 11:29:00 AM

The "L" models or models known as the "Droop Snoop" ships which had a glass nose and Norden in it.

The 56th FG had their own "droop snoop" P-38 which they used for several missions. However it was not so late a model I think. I am not sure but will look when i get home.

How effective were they?

Must been fairly effective as they were used to aim bombs.

You could load it with bombs, then have bunch of other P38's loaded up also and as this "droop snoot" drops bombs, others drops also.
So you could get nice amount of bombs in certain area and also provide air cover or strafe a little to fulfill the work.

This plane could lead a whole group of p-38's on a bombing mission. After dropping the bombs they could fight there way home.

But i am not sure how they could fight their way in. !?!?!  :)

Sorry lads but you can't have everything. Look at the droop snoop ship, it does NOT have ANY guns in the nose (where would they put them, in the bombaimers lap?). This aircraft carried a dedicated (and crazy) bombaimer in the nose. No guns. Of any sort.

Sorry.

So do they cram a bombardier into the nose on his belly?  That's a scary place to be...

I've never been able to find any pics of the interior section. If you know where I can find some, let me know.

spent 3 hours searching, no luck. There seems to be only 2 pictures of those droopsnoots.

E-mailed Lockheed Martin, who knows what might come up. (last time I did that they sent me a P-38 video for free  :) ).

Hold to that thought Pyro  :D

Not an internal view, but you can see inside the nose a bit better.

You know though, after the Mosquito is added a Droop Snoop isn't really going to be that special.  I can't think of many advantages a Droop Snoop has over a Mossie IV, besides the obvious 'never been done before in simulations' angle.

LtHans,

In the context of the full power all the time environment that AH has, the Droop Snoop P-38L would be faster than the Mosquito B.MkIV.  However the Mosquito B.MkXVI would be faster than the Droop Snoop.

Droop Snoop would give the same capability to the USAAF that the Mosquito gives to the RAF.

Thats not saying much though.  We don't have large enough targets for saturation bombing.  Hell, the B-17s and such have to aim down to  the foot to hit things in this game.

What you just described can already be done in AH, but nobody will do it.  All you have to do is fly a heavy fighter beside ANY plane that has a bombsight and drop when he does.  Like I said though, I doubt it will actually work.

BTW, that is also how BOMBER formations do it.  Only the lead bomber of a squadron is looking down at the target, the rest are just flying formation and drop when he does.
