Title: So I'm moving to Australia...
Post by: Oogly50 on November 28, 2008, 01:51:49 PM
and I was gonna get a new cell phone for christmas, however, when I move to Australia, we're confused about the cell phone plan and stuff...

For example, it could cost like, 2 cents a minute here, but then over in australia, with the same plan, it'd be like $10 a minute... Is there a plan that makes it so that it's the same cost, no matter where you are?

Oh yea, and any warnings you have for Australia?  I'm pretty excited to go...  The beaches... the surfing... the sailing...  But I hear America's not liked over in those eastern countries... I don't blame 'em though...

Why hello Miss Teen South Carolina!

Vulcan, in your super american geocentric world, Australia is west.

But, since the world is identified spatially using the Greenwich (Prime) meridian (Zero degrees), you'll notice that Australia is EAST.  This is why the oriental countries are know as "The Far East"

I'm sorry your education has failed you, but the young man moving was correct in his assessment as Australia being an EASTERN country.  Perhaps you might learn prior to trying to be a jerk to someone.

Been there twice for research.  Pay attention to the locals.  Australia is home to the highest concentration of dangerous and poisonous animals of any continent.  It has been isolated for so long that most everything there has developed very highly effective toxins, and/or other defenses (see "teeth")  Where/when the locals don't swim...how to keep spiders and other insects out of your domicile, etc.  It is a beautiful place, but also very dangerous.  Box jellyfish and Irukandji (another jellyfish) can kill an adult within minutes of contact.  Two types of spiders regularly maim people over there, the Funnel Web and Red Back.  In the tidepools, you can find blue ring octopus.... one bite, you might as well write you will right there.

Brown and Tiger Snakes..... I have never seen a snake that shows absolutely no fear of anything like an Australian Brown Snake.
And of course, the Great White is always around.

But, on the other hand.... to make up for the dangerous fauna.... The women are outstanding, and I mean OUTSTANDING.....Very down to earth.... and well....errr...I will say no more, in case my GF happens on this post.... I'm due to go back to Australia next year.   :aok

and a lizard that can eat you whole :D

sounds like a fun place.

I won't be living out in the middle of the country...  Right on the gold coast in queensland.  It'll be in a city... I could be wrong, but that probably isn't as dangerous as living in the outback...

I look forward to the surfing and sailing there... the jelly fish problem scares me though.  Where do those usually float around in australia?

For those wondering WHY I'm moving to Australia... My dad got a job there.  As everyone here knows, being a pilot in America SUCKS right now.  He sent in a resume' and the richest man in Queensland Australia calls us, wanting my dad to be his pilot.  His name is Clive Palmer...  http://www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2008/06/07/12153_more-gossip-news.html My dad's going into training Dec. 2nd (My birthday) to brush up on some of the Australian Flight rules.  He's already flown the MD-80 (the rich guys jet) so he doesnt need any training there.  After that, he's coming back, and then after christmas he's going down there.  Once the school year is over, the rest of us (including me) will fly down there with him.

But really... how dangerous could the city be in terms of life threatening snakes and spiders?  *trembles*

Nothing personal Moray, but it makes me smile when people worry themselves about poison snakes or sharks or whatever, and then drive to a pub (probably without seatbelt) and risk bodily injury insulting somebody while drunk.

I would say the odds are 900 to 1 against you being hurt by a snake than by a human. (including yourself)

If you like guns, don't go there. You can have one... But you need all manner of licenses, and STILL you gotta leave it at the range. Plus, a lot of em have to have a giant bolt welded to the bottom and attached to chains when you shoot.  :furious :furious :furious

^^^ Hahahahaha, that's pretty funny coming from a Kiwi!  :aok

Wow.... mention Australia and all you guys can do is cry about how scared you are of the bloody insects here!

Stop being such wusses, you big girls. We have fly spray and other insecticides in this country... funnily enough... they work!

I get redback spiders at my house sometimes.... They're bigger than average spiders and the big red stripe suggests that they might be deadly... so just stay away from them or unleash chemical warfare on the area from which they came from. If you keep up a fairly regular insecticide surface spray around your windows, doors and other openings you will not have a problem with 'deadly' creatures.

The beaches are always clearly signed when dangerous jellyfish and sharks are around. If you take Tronksi's advice and always swim between the flags at beaches with lifeguards no harm will come to you. I did surf lifesaving when I was a kid... was at the beach all the time... never had a problem. Don't be like all the damn fool tourists who ignore the flags... our beaches are dangerous. The flags denote the safest area of the beach in which to swim and help the life guards keep a track on you. If you get in trouble, stay calm, tread water and raise your arm. Help will come swiftly.

Australians don't have a problem with Americans.... as long as they aren't loud-mouthed, obnoxious bananas.... and many are. I find it worst when a group of Americans travel together... they seem to encourage each other to make a scene of themselves and talk absolute rubbish. Having said that, I doubt many people will give you a serious hard time about being a yank if you're a good kid. If you're a knob jockey then you may have issues... but that will be to do with being a knob.

Someone already said this too... learn to take a joke and also understand that you will be called 'mate' by everyone from your best friends to complete strangers.

Australia is typically a pretty laid back place, especially the Gold Coast.... Not the best place in the country to live but one of the best for a holiday.

Also, as you'll be playing AH in a completely different time zone you should try looking up some of the Aussie and Kiwi players.... good bunch of guys and I'm sure the Raw Prawns wouldn't mind you flying with us.... provided your voice isn't at a pitch that will make us cringe and you don't talk relentless crap like most other kids...

We fly Rooks and you'll recognise our accents immediately... it sticks out like dogs' balls when there are yanks on with us.

Australia is a good place... just don't forget your sunscreen.

According to your stunning assessment then France is an Eastern country, as is Germany, Finland Norway, Italy and so forth.

Maybe you should try dictionary.com:
east⋅ern     [ee-stern]
6.   (usually initial capital letter) Oriental.

western     [wes-tern]
6.   (usually initial capital letter) of or pertaining to the non-Communist countries of Europe and the Americas: Western trade agreements.

westernize       (wěs'tər-nīz')
tr.v.   west·ern·ized, west·ern·iz·ing, west·ern·iz·es
To convert to the customs of Western civilization.
west'ern·i·za'tion (wěs'tər-nĭ-zā'shən) n.

By definition NZ and Australia would call themselves Western countries, only a complete idiot would use that map to decide if a country was Western or Eastern.

Wherever Australia is.... east, west, south, WHATEVER.  The point is I'm going there...  It's really no big deal to me.  Vulcan, you can relax now.

Xasthur, thanks for the offer, but my internet has seen better days and now I'm a warp magnet.  I stopped playing AH about a few months ago.  When I get into Australia I'll see if I can get back in the mood for Aces High.  How is the internet connection down there?

I sent my daughter to Australia for 3 weeks 2 years ago with a group called People to People.  They traveled along the west coast from the Great Barrier Reef down to the island with the penquins.  Although it cost us close to 9 Large, she loved every bit of it.  They were there in July (Stephanie turned 11 on the 10th while they were there) and it was winter time in the southern hemisphere.  The memories and the pics are worth more than anything to her.  Good luck down under.  Life is a bit different down there, the food, activities, sports, school, but they do tend to like people from the States.  As to the phone, talk to your friends in the states via Yahoo or something or get a phone card or 2 before you leave.  Whereabouts are you going to be living?  You are going to have to learn Cricket and Rugby, good luck with the first one.  LOL.  Keep in touch Oogly.

As an Australian I can tell you that your not going to have any problems with the locals. At the age of 14 going to an Australian school you will generate a lot of interest with the girls (unless of course you look as if you have been hit by a truck) be your self listen to the locals you will be fine.

Internet is expensive compared to the Yank providers, IIRC.... but you'll just have to deal with it.

Optus cable seems to be the most consistant connection. A couple of the other Prawns have problems with other providers and I get disco'd very, very rarely.... Once a month if I'm unlucky and my connection speeds seem pretty good... I don't have much trouble with others warping and no one suggests that I warp.

Optus seems to be the way to go.

Lyric is right, by the way, being an American kid at school will probably help you get some tail.  :aok

Queensland is a top spot.
The Gold Coast is a fairly lively little city, it will wear on you though if you try to live it up all day every day.
ISP's are a little prehistoric, we pay $110/month for 8Mbps. ADSL2+ should be available on the Gold Coast though.

AH! Aussie girls.  I loved (and still do love, don't tell my wife) the bodies, now if they just came equipped with a Kiwi accent, Irish grace, English education and Scotish constitution those women would be the most perfect ever IMHO.

Seriously, what Lyric said, in my early career I was sent to Australia and learned that if I talked a little, listened a lot &  showed even moderate interest in a Aussie girl then she became very interested in me.  Oh yes, enjoy the beach as much as you can; unless you get sent to Hawaii, you'll NEVER see the likes again.

I pay $99 a month for 'unlimited' 12 gig p/month broadboand + homephone with Optus. I don't know what the connection speed is... It's good enough for flawless AH, so that's enough for me.

I got 50gig/month (Shaped after that or purchase more), no home phone bundle.
We are bandwidth hogs. Some months we burn through that 50 gig allowance in a few days.

Do not spend too much time on the beaches and always use a good sunscreen. Ultraviolet radiation is pretty tough there.

Yep, hat, sunnies, SPF30+ and good clothes.... you'll be fine.

Follow that advice and you can spend as much time down there as you want, just keep re-applying the sunscreen.

You'll soon see the women from the 80s who thought that 'beach bronze' was the look to die for.... You could skin them and make handbags. As soon as you see that you'll make sure you have sunscreen where ever you go! haha.
