Before my great uncle passed away (at 101) he sat down and recorded about eight tapes worth of stories ranging from his childhood to the world wars and up to the present.

Interview him!  :aok

Here is a link to Ernie Pyle's first hand accounts of front line action. Great site, brings chills to me to listen to these articles.

It may suck but in another way it is good that you are alive to have met these Brave men and women. Take the time to sit with any of these vets and watch how they glow with your interest. I have met so many from Pearl Harbor survivors, Tuskegee Pilots, Chuck Yeager, and just every day soldiers and sailors. It is sad watching them leave us (lost my grandparents already) but I take in Great Honor the fact that we are able to see and hear their stories.

:salute the next one you run into and thank them.

My dad should still have the tapes.
Though he and I are not on the best of terms right now. I'll see about getting a hold of them!

Never knew how cool my dad was until he entertained my college roomates and dorm residents with his stories of the shenanigans in Normandy and either Belgium or Holland (I forget).

First hand accounts of "hot-foots," V2 rockets, strafing aircraft, etc.  But mostly accounts of how the men razzed each other for entertainment.  His fondest stories were of those where his officers intervened on the behalf of their men (knowing the rambunctious nature of the men) they dismissed any accusation that their men were capable of any such wrong doing (yeah, right  ).

you best pick the germans, the japs were loons! they take no prisoners and will fight you to the death. i've heard stories from my grandparents during the philippine occupation where they'd toss a baby up and pierce it with a sword when it came down. one of my grampa's brothers also died fighting the japs as a guerilla while macarthur regrouped in australia. good thing my vet grampa survived the great war otherwise i wouldn't be here!

yep they were a brutal military force. just look what they did at manchuria before we came into the picture...
Quote from: www.japanww2.com
The story of this WWII (1931-1945) theater of war is that Japan invaded Asian countries representing one-third of the human race. This Great Asian-Pacific Crescent of Pain consisted of many hundreds of millions of people from Japan to Korea, China/Manchuria throughout Southeast Asia, the Pacific, and Indian Ocean islands.3 The Japanese military physically subjugated over half this population. The destruction of cities, towns and villages was widespread. Many millions perished. The surviving casualties-whose lives were probably shortened due to their injuries and hardships-were in the many tens of millions. Those severely affected included wounded and maimed, raped and tortured, maltreated forced labor, massive numbers of destitute and despairing refugees and homeless, war orphans, and widows. Others affected by Japan's aggression included brutalized POWs and civilian internees, victims of severe war-caused malnutrition and painful diseases, addicts (from Japanese opium sales), and ill equipped and ill supported Chinese soldiers. Most of the casualties were comprised of noncombatant women, children, and men. The count of the dead and severely affected equaled the total population of the United States at the time. When relatives and communities traumatized by these casualties are added, the scale of the tragedy easily doubles. Few of the populations whose lands were invaded were unaffected.

I'd say both Jap and German war machines were equally savage to combatants and non combatants. Murdered millions of innocent folks. War is not all glory, many die that are never known or found.

Nor is anyone really innocent. There was crap happening on both sides; crap none of us are too proud of. I know that the Japanese Governing bodies have still not made an official apology to the 'comfort women' who were taken as sex slaves. I had one person on youtube try to deny this with proof from some Japanese Historical site. Yea ok.

At any rate, the Allied side wasn't perfect either. Brits, Americans, Canadians and Russians all have their own overall reputations but that doesn't always account for each and every individual. There's always that one person who made a terrible mistake.

The vets (and those who suffered) really deserve appreciation because they were brave enough to simply endure it, regardless of nationality. And as for those who died, they really need respect. We look up to veterans but they look up to those souls up there who just couldn't make it.

Not me.... they were the best trained army in the world at that time and probally the best equipped. The worst thing about the PTO was it's location. The Jap's were really no match for the American soldier.

We have our reputation too...

When you read books written by American authors etc, it seems they only tell about the bad the enemy did and the good we did. Every side did bad things...no matter what level...no side was perfect.

He is talking in past tense as what the Japanese were known by. Considering this is a WW2 game and some of us tend to jump into that time period while playing or talking about WW2, Jap is fitting.

Saw plenty of film footage of how Eisenhower starved German pow's . there was a huge pow camp right next to a supply depot that was bigger than the camp. The pow's didn't even have shealter, food or medical care. I believe this was very late in the war and Eisenhower  had just taken a tour through a former Jewish pow camp. He was pissed and wanted retribution.

I saw another film of 70-80 German SS pow's being marched along a road narrated by the guy who shot the film. What he said after the film had stopped was that very one of these prisoners was machine gunned down not 3 minutes later. Why..... because they had killed a medic.  So yes you are right, history is written by the victors.

Ahem, they started it.  To me, if anyone attacks you, you do what you have to do.  Also, the level of "Bad" is different between the two sides.  Yeah, no one was perfect, but there is no comparison to what the allies did - after they were attacked - to what the Germans or Japs did.  Although, it is ok for the Germans because they were really just following orders so it does not count.  Lets all give a big <<S>> to them :huh

The Germans attacked the US?????? Where? Hitler declared war on the US  after Pearl Harbor but there was no attack. Roosevelt wanted to get into ww2 and did everything to get into it in Europe. Now the Japanese brought it on all on their own. Also the Germans were brought up on war crimes while many Japanese villains got off the hook. I'm sure if the US lost the war there would be war crimes on many of the Allied leaders as well. So there was plenty of so called Geneva war crimes to go around. It may help that you crack a book before posting comments with no forknowledge.

Read my post.  Where did I mention the letters U and S?  :rofl  Before we talk about books lets focus on reading a simple post.  However, not only I have read said books, but I have family stories/experiences have seen the actual locations of where the German contributions to the human race took place, and have listened to stories of a few survivors.  As far as my grandma was concerned, you can take your book and, well, you can figure it out.  She did not need one to tell her what she had gone through.  As I said, no one was or is perfect.  But what the Germans and Japs did on a systematic basis, does not compare.  Go dust your uniform now  :lol

I hope you don;t think that the allies is really only the US, lol

wrong again........ The Germans (other than the Jewish people) were no where even close to the Japanese. The Japanese killed over 300,000 Chinese just looking for the Doolittle Raiders. The were countless people gathered up for chemical experiments and many complete towns completely destroyed (people included) throughout China. Did Germany have a Battan death march? Errrr NO! Was every prisoner taken by the Germans starved into skeletal form ? Errrrr NO! I could go on but don't feel I need to.

The Russians (our Allies) had 30million people murdered. Read up on how many German survivors came back from Russian captivity. Erich Hartmann was held for 10 years after the war ended, what the hell did he do that 10 years of hard labor required? I'm sure if you totalled up the civilian death toll that the German and Japanese  civilians  suffered there were probally more  civilian loses than the total American military loses. I think that a little light WW2 reading would bring you up to speed.

Britian were the ones that declared war on Germany upon the attack on Poland. Basically the Germans were getting land back that Hitler considered to be German soil. Hitler never had any desire for British conquest. I guess your from Poland by the statement that Germany attacked you.

Well both of my parents were from Europe. My father lived in occupied Holland, so I do know first hand the stories. If a book needs to be shoved somewhere then you can personally come and visit me and  try it for youself. That kind of B.S. threat doesn't go too far with me. How do I know where you came from. The majority of the people that play AH are from the US so my apologies for not realizing that you could be from somewhere else.
