Border....thereby spheres of influence.
Certain events going otherwise in Medieval European history would have lead to a total muslim area covering most of Europe and becoming by far the biggest cultural area...

Its unclear how much The Crusades contributed to keeping most of Europe Christian. Most of them were complete failures in every measurable way and the goal of all of them was to establish and protect a Christian presence in the Holy Land. I agree there was plenty of worry about the spread of Islam, "followers of whom put infidels to the sword". But this spread was stopped in places far removed from The Crusades and The Holy Lands. And even in the Holy Lands Christianity failed eventually.
I'm not saying The Crusades didn't have historical importance. But I do believe its over-rated.

Hes not referring to the Crusades, hes referring to the Battle of Tours and the campaigns that kept the Turks from moving further into Europe than Vienna.

whats funny is the pope at the time says "if you go to the holy land, and kill those unbelievers you will be guaranteed a place in Heaven..." or some such nonsense.
sorry if this touches on the religion rule.

Well, since I'll be the only one to interpret the "world" as not just being "human civilization", like the rest of you.
The number one thing that changed the world....

Was watching a show similar to this thread, it was inventions that changed the world. #1 invention was the printing press. Since I believe everything I see on T.V. I'm going with the printing press.

my dad has worked for Sanders Acc for 40 years now, they were owned by lockheed at one point. he said they were the worst head up their arse group of bureaucratic morons he had ever had to deal with! but that their techs and engineers where some of the greatest guys on the planet.

1)WWII (Atomic Bomb)
2)WWI (New type war bieng fought i.e. planes, tanks, trenches, 'no-mans land')
3)Cable Television :) (simple things such as cable television helped raise the iron curtain of the soviet union, once communist russia sees the freedoms of america it leads to a freedom act in russia.)
4)ColdWar-Arms/Space Race (Gives birth to new technologies that enhance the security of our country. i.e missle defense systems[STARWARS] and sattelites.
5)Stalingrad (The battle at stalingrad showed the world that Hitlers war machine could be defeated; was a point in WWII that Allied morale and the war turned in its favor.)
6)Mark Edens ( I changed the world in showing that suaveness has no limits  )
uhg i dont have time to think about the rest... Ill just say these are the top 6 things that 'I' think changed history
