How about this one.. Go ahead and point out everything wrong with it..
No kill messages in flight, but the same landing message we have now. Kill tally would be found either on the clipboard (pop up or otherwise), or on a chalkboard in the tower view. It would give people an incentive to rtb safely without favoring timidity.
An outstanding flaw would be players augering to find out who they killed, unless things were set up so you couldnt cop out like that...
It would also get in the way of .S 'ing good fights and what not.
-
if the person shot down still sees who it was that shot him down then it wouldn't interfere with the <S> much.
if a person wants to <S> someone they shot down then they would be able to see the name of that person once they were in the tower so it would still give them an opportunity to do so.
what it would cut down on is the in flight taunting of a pilot some one shot down. they wouldn't get the name until landing and by then it would be a MOOT point :D

Eh, I dunno, I kind of like having SOME sort of indication. Like you are in a melee, and you land a good burst on something but there is alot of other stuff taking up your attention, it is good to know you shot them down and can concentrate on other matters.
Then again, I won't claim it is realistic.

It would be a bit more realistic, but it's just as much to encourage people landing, without pushing em to fly timid either. I personaly think it'd kinda suck to not know who you killed so you could salute them.. Then again it might tone down some of the whines on ch200. You'd have time to simmer down before finding out who got you.
Maybe you could have the .s be a PM instead of a ch1 message. You'd just type in .s and it'd automaticaly PM to the last kill. Making it go to a specific kill (e.g. <.s 1> to salute kill #1) would get confusing fast. The guy getting the <S> could opt to let the saluter know who he is, or not.. I dont know if its a good or bad thing for the salute to not be visible for all to see, tho.
Overall I think it'd be more fun than as it is now.
The doubt about something being killed or not is, I think, part of good SA. It would be more immersive.

Yep, you would have a tally of your sortie, kills and assists, once back in the tower. The question is if/how to differentiate that scenario from one where you auger out of the sortie just to find out.. It's a reward of sorts to get that tally after a safe landing, so idealy you wouldnt get that same reward if you augered instead.
what it would cut down on is the in flight taunting of a pilot some one shot down. they wouldn't get the name until landing and by then it would be a MOOT point :D
I think that'd be better, yep..
Oh and this would make it pretty hard to taunt-salute fast paced vulches :lol

well if you land then obviously you get the list,
or if you are shot down you get the list,
but if your plane hasn't suffered so much damage (i.e. engine failure, missing half a wing pilot wound ect) that it makes the continued flying of it to a friendly base an unlikely event, then the ditching, bailing or crashing of it doesn't give you the list.

What is this landing stuff of which you speak?

forgive them... they're new...

I like the idea, Moot.
Maybe on this clipboard list you could also click on the name (much like you do the roster) to access other options, including sending a .s to that person. I wouldn't enable an easy way to tune vox/text to that person, I can see certain people abusing that.

Substitute the plane for the person's name. You take snapshots at a spit, a nik, and a hurri. Later, you get a kill on GameID. You don't know if that was the spit, the nik, or the hurri. Or maybe someone just augered near you. Getting the plane type is a better indication in my mind.

or it could be both, "you have shot down so and so flying a so and so". then you would know the who's and the whats all in one message.

True, but moot's original point was eliminating knowing who you shot down in flight. I am offering an option in support of the original post.

You can't do that! :D ... Thanks. :) I think it would break up the gameyness a bit. Having a tally of your kills confirmed after landing your bird would be pretty immersive and more rewarding.well if you land then obviously you get the list,

That's still too penalizing.. Not knocking you, it's the same thing I thought of myself. It shouldnt be a hassle for players to find out who they got a kill or assist on, either.. It will work if we can find some way for 'good' flights where you rtb safely to be rewarded, but also for 'bad' SAPP flights to not have anything taken away from them either. That wouldnt be fair.

Maybe have it only as a "planetype : unconfirmed kill" (or any better way to phrase it), and you only get the kills/assists/proxy and pilot names confirmed once back in the tower? Everyone (killer and assists) would get the message. Would this affect kill stealing for better or worse (or not at all)?
This way might be the best alternative so far.
A post-flight tally might look like the authentic ones.. Events and time stamp for each, e.g. take off, kills/assist/proxy, refueling at X location, flight end (landing/ditch/bail/crash) at Y (unless in the field).
It would be cool to have the tower chalkboard show the latest lander's sortie for everyone to see, but that might be a bit iffy to render and might be too expensive in bandwidth.
-
It's part of the fun knowing who you shot down and who shot you down.
-
You still would. You would still know instantly if the guy you salute returns it.
Would you not get any kick out of a more historical way of confirming kills? Landing your bird home and getting the tally like in WWII? Even if you died you could still get the details.. That'd be the only real hassle, having to click and fumble thru the clipboard to get the info... Or maybe there could be an option for it, where after each flight you can have the flight report pop up automaticaly, like MOTDs do. And since being shot down ends your sortie, the X shot you down message could remain as it is now.
