Title: Extreme Foreclosure Makeover
Post by: Fulmar on December 08, 2008, 01:24:22 PM
I never really cared for Extreme Makeover Home Edition, mainly because I felt that they were making entertainment out of someone's bad fortunes by plopping them down with a new house etc.  Don't get me wrong, my heart goes out to some of the families and what they've gone through.  But there are better ways to help these families out rather than having a product placement TV show hosted by a d. bag.

Many of the Vardons' neighbors had thought that their mortgage was paid off when they appeared on the show in November 2004, but that was not the case. Now the home is one of the 390 in Oak Park currently in foreclosure.

The Vardons' property taxes are also part of their financial problems. They jumped almost $1,000 after the makeover.

After their appearance on the show, Larry was laid off and they remortgaged the house. Since then the mortgage has been resold to different companies three times, with the interest rate jumping each time.

I always wondered how families were able to afford those homes once they moved that bus.  I'm sure there are more stories like this out there as well.

My sister lives in the same town where they filmed one of those shows about a week ago. It may have brought business to the area at the cost of literally shutting down the town. I've never seen the show and now I want to watch it even less.

I'm not sure how their taxes went up so much, many towns give tax exemptions on not only homes but even cars if they are made handicapped accessible. For example, my parents don't pay taxes on their van because my father has a wheelchair and a lift inside of it.

According to your link its the mortgage crisis and medical bills that are the problem, not the TV show...how are they to blame again?

Also, him being laid off contributed.

According to the article, the father got laid off, medical coverage was lost when he was laid off. The medical bills were not stopped due to the condition of the kid. They refi'd the house to make ends meet and the mortgage payment went up. The medical bills are still coming in and are not covered by their insurance. Taxes on the property went up because the value of the property was raised by the new larger and expensive house. Pretty simple to figure out there. These folks problems are not the fault of the show, it's the job situation and mortgage situation.
