Title: Lost My Wingman

Socrates passed today.  You may have heard some cheaping when I was speaking on vox...  Sometimes he would hang out on my shoulder while I fly AH.  It's possible that the disposable baking pan my wife was cooking with may have done him in. :(  We knew to be careful with Teflon; this appeared safe.  If you own a bird, please be more careful than we were.  We're going to miss him! :salute

Sorry to hear that man, had a bird when I was growing up(cockatiel), they are fun pets to have.

So what is it about a baking pan that killed him?

Teflon will emit toxic fumes when just sitting on a stove heating.

Teflon will emit toxic fumes when just sitting on a stove heating.

My understanding is that only happens over 700 deg. F. If used as designed, most teflon pans won't harm beast or fowl.

Cute little fool, sorry to here that.  :salute

Here's my homies ... Officially Pepin & Lucie, but to me Usef & Ralf (USAF & RAF). Ralf passed away when we got our German Sheperd. She gobbed it right out of the sky like a flak burst. Survived both our cats for years, to die like a sucker to a puppy dog.

I lost an African Grey a few years ago.  We think it may have been because one of our neighbors was burning some trash (tires? shingles?  other?) and the smoke was blowing right at our house.  We weren't home at the time, but had the windows and doors open.  "Zulu" didn't seem quite himself that evening, and died that night.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

I know they're sensitive to smoke and fumes but I've never heard of fumes comming out of regularly used cookware taking a pet out (aluminum or teflon I know are bad, but only at extreme tempuratures I thought).  Was he close to the kitchen, or is it a small apartment?  I live in a small apartment and regularly cook, I hope it's not harming my pets.

Thank you for the kind words everyone.  Our other bird survived the ordeal and is staying at the vet's house tonight.  We will pick her up tomorrow. :)

Secondly, we are going to pay for a necropsy to know for sure what was the cause of death.  I have a 7 month old son and if there's something wrong with our house, furnace, or whatever, I can't risk not knowing.  The birds live in our living room which is open to the kitchen, so that's how they were exposed so easily (house is ~1300 sq ft).

The fumes are toxic to tiny bird lungs. Not so much in humans. Yes you need to have something cooking in it.
If you just put it on the stove and let it get overheated with nothing in it ,it is bad for our bird friends.

Sorry to hear about that. :(

I'm torn on Teflon pans...When they're new, you have some problems (left over chemicals from manufacturing), when they're old, you also have problems (long term breakdown of molecules).  However, almost anything you cook produces some bad compounds.  That's why we cook--to break down proteins and carbohydrates.  Grilling or charbroiling is especially bad.

After this (I had no idea birds were that sensitive), I plan on buying some ceramic coated pans.  Seems there are some inexpensive ones available.

There is no other pet like a bird.
I have a cockatiel and a quaker parrot that both talk, funny little dudes they are :)
The quaker just learned to sing the kill bill whistle :)
This is my favorite pic of them after thier bath...

Thats cool that you taught it the song from "Kill Bill".

My cockatiel looked exactly like the one you have, yellow with the orange check spots, his name was Tweety.

I always hated clipping there wings, it's hard because you do it too close and you'll make his wing bleed.

Both of my birds are flighted.  I don't believe in clipping thier wings, you just have to be more careful of what they can get into.  My tiel is 14 years old and very well behaved, my quaker is just over a year and gets into absolutely everything he can. :)

Regarding the teflon pans...I gave all of mine away years ago when I got my tiel.  I have read a lot of stories about the fumes and just don't want take a chance.  If they are that harmful to birds, I don't want to eat with them either.  All stainless or cast iron in my house.

I hope the necropsy gives you some answers.  I would want to know what happened also if it was one of mine.  How long did you have him for?  I thought about getting a love bird when I got my quaker.  They're so cute.

I've never heard anything about Teflon being toxic to birds before, kinda weird that it is toxic.

It is very bad for birds and now they are saying that it is not so great for us either.
I know of a lady who lost all three of her birds in one day from cooking supper.  She didn't burn the food she was cooking either.  :(

A couple of links about teflon coating...

Very sorry to hear about your wingman. I have 3 birds, 2 are in my office where I play and 1 will sit on my sholder while logged. I always get asked if there are birds around me. I wont cook on teflon anymore after hearing this story.

The first CO of the Buccaneers Whitey -brkt- (may he rest in peace) had a parrot that would stand on his monitor and watch the screen upside down.  When Whitey would get shot up the bird would swear a few seconds before Whitey would.

Looks like Teflon poisoning.  We didn't go through with the necropsy.  The vet called its viability into question because of decomposition of the body, but the surviving bird shows labored breathing which may take a month to heal.  He also said the only thing he's ever seen that can kill a bird that fast is Teflon poisoning.

We are getting rid of all our non-stick pans and appliances.

They should really put warnings on Teflon pans about this, because I guarantee that not many people are even aware of this danger, or atleast pet shops should start making sure they tell people who buy birds about not cooking with it.

Thats hilarious.

It is very sad that they don't have to put a warning on the pans and that they can still make them!
Now that they are linking them to human heath problems, I am sure that we will see a change.  They are already coming out with other coatings, but I won't buy anything coated again.
Maybe if the few MILLION people who have lost birds to these products formed a law suit, things would change.  But I think the fact that they have never been made to do anything about it is the problem.
:salute to little Socrates.  May his passing save the life of another.
