I'd like to see the color of text in the buffer set by whether it's Radio 1, 2, 3 or 4, not by what channel you're set to. For example, right now if you tune Radio 1 to country, and Radio 2, 3 and 4 to say, 120, 106 and 140, you have one channel coming in as green and three as yellow. If you're not paying attention to the channel number in a message name (like, Saxman 120: <message>) that can be pretty hard to read.
Instead, set a default like:
Radio 1 - Green
Radio 2 - Red
Radio 3 - Yellow
Radio 4 - Purple
And allow players to change them.
The non-channel text like System messages, PM's, CM's in scenarios/etc, could be kept the way they are, since they're in different colors anyway and easily recognizable.

Actually was discussing this the other day with someone.
Noting how easy it was to get confused in an FSO frame where we had
A squad text & vox on 1 channel (in yellow) 1##
B Country orders, liason, and enemy sightings on another tuned channel 150
C Trying to keep escorts and bombers all in the same place at the same time on yet another channel.
So Yes I like your idea of being able to assign color by radio rather than by channel, at least for the tuned channels. Either that or break up the tuned channels in blocks of 25 and assign each a slightly different color.
Colors would have to avoid system messages gold, HTC crew in Cyan, and CM messages in Dark Blue.
(which makes it much tougher)

That's why I think Green, Red, Yellow and Purple would work best.
