Sometimes it seems like my connections get sluggish on the net overall and might take a while to load up a page. I have discovered, althought I'll bet 99.9% of ya all knew this, but if I unplug the router and modem power for a minute or so and let them reboot, my speeds are finger snapping quick to open up again.
Which makes me wonder if some apparent lag in the sim here that people complain about could be remedied by simply rebooting computer, router and modem once in a while? No one complains about me ever warping, but I see a warper here and there. Anyway, when you reboot your computer, whether it be daily as in shutting it off or once a week, it doesnt take but a couple of minutes to reset the router and modem along with the computer and may make a difference in your web speeds too.

Wonder if renewing the IP address is what's the bigger thing

Booting the modem doesn't necessary change the IP. It's tied to the mac address.

I have to do this every once in a while as well because sometimes the internet sites load really slowly. A quick modem and router power off and back on and I'm back in business. What I would like to know is why do I have to do this at all? Is there something wrong with my modem? Connection? Drivers? ISP (Cox Communications)?

Consumer grade router modems are buggy usually. I'm suffering from the same thing. Firmware update helped a little but I still have to reboot regularly.

One reason to unplug Router/Modem and any connections from time to time is to help remove Static build-up. Normally 30 seconds for the cables and 1-3 minutes for power works, though some recommend more time.

Do you use any filesharing/p2p software (such as bittorrent)?

No all the kids are gone and the wife barely uses it and I pretty much only search net and play aces high.

Yeah, a lot of this depends on the reliability of the modem and/or router, but it might also be transient power dips that are causing problems.
When I have a client with this problem, I normally make sure they have a UPS (uninterruptable power supply) and make sure the router/modem is plugged into the battery backed up side.
This cures the problem about 40% of the time.
As for consumer grade hardware: a lot of it is firmware. These days I don't specify any router for a client unless it can run DD-WRT firmware. I've never had to have such a router reset for a client. My own Linksys WRT54GL running DDWRT hasn't been restart in about 8 months.
Just a data point.
