You asked for WWII structures in my area... this is the closest one to my appartment. 5mins away with bicycle. Guess it's function ;)

Looks like a cement Igloo

I see a small opening on the side there, is it the entrance to some sort of underground bunker system? Are there any openings on the part we don't see?

i've got plenty of pictures from my many trips to norway of bunkers and pill boxes from WWII, even found shell casings a few times, i'll try and find them

It looks like a support for something else, maybe a V2 prior to them being moved around by truck?
-

Tank obstacle? (although it seems a bit over constructed to be one)
The opening in the side has me a tad :huh

It's for the lone gunman. And the poor little guy thinks he's safe, until a grenade or bazooka hit that is!
Cool Photo Snailman!!!

Bombproof bike stand.
:rofl
It is indeed a one man bunker, a "Luftschutz-Splitterschutzzelle".
This bicycle way was formerly an industrial railroad track, the "Erzbahn", starting at the Rhein-Ruhr canal in Gelsenkirchen and transporting iron ore to the blast furnaces to the Bochumer Verein. That kind of small shelters, big enough only for a man (or maybe two), were built to provide cover for those men working on or at the track in case of an air raid. The two I found still standing have been placed at at railroad switches.

i had been askin about bomb shelters. only thing that comes to mind right now

Well, that is one. A somewhat small example though ;)
But besides this tiny one, there are still 15 big ones standing all over the city.
This one is about 15 mins walking distance away. 300 people died in here when an air mine exploded nearby while the gates were still open:

This one I passed daily on my way to the universitiy years ago:

And this one looks quite interesting:

I wasnt sure what an air mine was when i read this quote, but i found the definition in the Urban Dictionary.
1. Air Mine
Quite simply a highly toxic fart left in a room when its main occupant is not present, to be discovered later when the occupant returns. This form of warfare has been outlawed by NATO but is still in use in many urban office engagement zones.
300 dead,oh the horror :O
:D
