I've used hostmonster for the last 9 months or so after I had recommendations from the guys at ahevents.org It's the best host I've had in 8 years of doing websites. Cheapest plans run about $6 or $7 a month.

Bluehost.com is the parent of hostgator or hostmonster.......
Anyhow, Bluehost has been great in the two and a half years that Ive been a customer. Support has and is top notch. Pricing is comparable to others.
Right now my account has unlimited space and bandwidth. Im running a teamspeak server, website(under construction), forums, gallery. To date the account has not hiccuped.
Bluehost has been around for a number of years and has a pretty good track record.
Check around, you can find good deals on hosting if you do the research.
Just dont believe everything you read on a single site. Hosting companies(especially young outfits) will post all kinds of "User reviews" that claim they are the best out there. What happens is the individuals in the company make up user names and post the reviews about themselves. Lots of companies even rate themselves on hosting sites to drive in business. Cant blame them for wanting to succeed.
Check with you ISP as they may provide hosting service as a part of your account. It may not be much, but then again it very well may be all you need.
If your new to building a site, and maintaining that site, be prepared to spend countless hours researching ideas.
Another thing to consider is how much are you wanting to spend for a years service? The longer the contract you sign, the better the price you will pay in most instances. you could set up an account thru paypal or some of the other online payment outfits and accept donations for the cost of the hosting plan. That will help lessen the dent in your wallet, but donations are an iffy proposition at best.
There are outfits out there that rate hosting services, take a look at them for a more information about any one service:
http://www.webhostdir.com/
http://www.hostindex.com/
http://www.hostreview.com/
Be very careful when if you purchase an account from a new outfit. Many of those are "one man" operations. I know of a few that are run from the owners computer desk in his bedroom(was one for a while). They mean well, but 99% of them dont have the time that is necessary to take care of support issues in a timely manner.
If you have lots of money to blow, contract a server from http://www.theplanet.com/
Will cost you at best a couple of hundred dollars a month, but then you can host your site AND start your own webhost business!

I, too, am a Blue Host subscriber. http://www.bluehost.com/
I just renewed my subscription and have been very pleased with the service and Control Panel options. They also have Forums to ask questions as well. A 2 Year contract may be a bad thing for some, but actually it locks the price. I have a 6 domain limit and 500GB which is plenty for my 3 sites. That was the "deal" back then.
New folks are basically given unlimited domain hosting and space and transfer for the same $6.95 a month!
I even have an older site with their logo/link-if you chose to order. http://www.webdesignbyken.com/
Disclaimer: I do get paid a fee if you use that link. It's not necessary as I have their link at the top here and you can link them directly.
