Greetings all fellow AHers
I am NOT looking for sympathy... although if you've seen my gunnery you might offer some anyway!
My medical certificate for flying RW aircraft (or a motor vehicle of any kind for hat matter has has been revoked due to having 2 malignant tumors removed from my brain last week. It is/was(they are) the same kind of tumor(s) that Senator Kennedy was recently diagnosed with. Who would believe that I would have something in common with TED Kennedy :) Politics aside. I wish him a full recovery and wouldn't wish this on my wost enemy even if he or she were a ROOK!!! :lol
I f any of you could remember me in your prayers. I could use any and all help of that nature...
I start CHEMO and radiation therapy next month. and the neurosurgery team that performed the procedures are confident that they got all the bad stuff removed.
I have good and bad days but I am recovering and I am hopeful for the future
-
good luck and hope it all goes well.
-
Oh mannnn!
Hard to think of something to say after reading that.
I don't know you well Maj, but I sure wish you well. Gotta say, i really hate hearing this kind of stuff from anyone, I rather it not exist,... you'll be in my prayers.
Even though the the doc's took care of the major threat, you must know you've got a tough time coming ahead. Keep in mind that your not alone and many others have traveled that same road before you. Don't let your guard down and use your strength and determination to beat it and you'll be fine. I'm confident in a hopeful way that you ARE one of those stronger types who will push forward quickly to a full recovery.
Salute brother and keep the faith.

Being a survivor myself (16 years and counting :knock on wood: )albeit of a less serious nature. I can relate(Particularly to the good days bad days) and would like to express my condolences and prayers.
Now if we could have such luck in winning the lottery, right? LOL
As I am sure you have already figured out. You are in for an interesting journey. I know the worst part for me was going through all of the tests to try and determine the extent. Often with a big monitor showing all the things they are taking pictures of. Trying to see if YOU can see anything. But not knowing what the hell your looking for.
The fact they are waiting a month before starting chemo tells me this is of a slow progressing variety.
Chemo can be a rough trip. If the Doc tells you to stay active. Then STAY ACTIVE. You wont feel great. But you will feel even sicker if you just lay around.
I know I used to get my treatments on a Thursday. And I would just lay there and not be able to eat again till Sunday.
I was almost halfway through my treatments before I discovered by accident that even though I still didnt feel like eating. I felt a hell of alot better if I got up and moved around.
As for food. You may find that some of the foods you normally like are going to taste absolutely gross. If they taste like anything at all.
From that Thurs. to Sunday. Soda tasted like garlic water to me. And eggs tasted like I had a mouthful of snot.
Iced tea tasted great and oddly enough Beer tasted normal. (I drank quite a bit of beer in that 6 months)
When you can eat. Eat as well as you can. Lotsa fresh veggies as well as meats
Your going to have to find what works best for you.
My chemo was 12 cycles. 1 treatment every two weeks for 6 months.
Seems like a long time to look forward to the end.
What I did is broke it up in halves.
Counting up the first half then down the next.
"1 treatment down 5 to go for the first half"
Then on the 6th I counted down. Not thinking how many I had done. Just how many were left. "Ok Half way there.5 left, 4 left etc.
Seems silly but I found it helped mentally rather then saying "Oh god, you mean I have to go through this 11 more times?"
Make light of it as much as you can. Keep your sense of humor. Be it from peeing turquise from a lymphangiogram.Or peach colored from part of the treament. (Your tests and treatments may vary.)To loosing your hair like a collie.
One of the things I did was I didnt shave my head. And yea I could shed like a collie.
People would always ask "how are you doing" I found as sincere and well meaning as the question was. After about the 3 millionth time it gets old.
Sooo I came up with unique ways of responding. One of my favorites was "I'm doing ok. I learned a new trick from my dogs"
To which they would invariably ask "Oh? whats that?"
To which I would say "I learned how to shed" And at the same time I said shed. I'd reach up and pull out a clump of hair.
The looks of shock were priceless hillarious.
Oh and yea. Your gonna loose your hair...... ALL your hair cept your eyelashes.
Which you may find your wife or girlfriend kinda likes. Which is yet another reason to eat well. She also wont miss your raser stubble.
Your going to be a changed person when its all over with.
Some things that bother you or the average person now in every day life will somehow seem petty.
You wont worry as much about the little things. And you will probably find that most things are little things by comparison.
The key is to keep a good attitude. Which it seems by your post you have so far.
Its ok to be angry. Just dont let your anger overwhelm you. And remember your angry at it. Not the people around you.
Use it as a mental weapon. If you dont understand what I mean by that now. You will.
Maintain an even keel. Not letting yourself get too high. or too low.
Be patient with your family. Remember. Yes they cant relate to what your going through. Only people who have gone through it can relate to what your going through. By the same token. You cant relate to what they are going through either. Its different, but every bit as much of a nightmare for them as for you.
Maintain your humor. It will help get you and your loved ones through the rough times.
You will probably find that every one you meet who has gone through this is almost like an extended family member.
You are now part of a fraternity. One neither you nor I wanted. But here we are nonetheless.
I have offered you the best advise I can based on my own experiences. I am sure there are otehrs who will offer theirs as well.
You seem to have the attitude for it. Just keep it that way.
If ever you need an ear that can relate. PM me and I will give you my contact info.
Good luck and stay strong.

Wow, I am so sorry to hear you are going through this. I don't know what kind of tumors those are, but I hope they were able to remove them completely. My mom passed away from brain cancer on February 19th. They were never able to remove the tumor completely because it extended far into her brain, and it kept coming back. After the third surgery it was time for palliative care. I hope it doesn't come to that point for you, but if it might, please, please put your wishes in writing for your spouse or for the person who will be making decisions if you are unable to. My mom made it very clear (verbally) that she didn't want medical treatment if the remainder of her time would be without her mental faculties, and I don't quite feel my step-father was able to follow through on that when it was time for the difficult choice. Think out possible scenarios and leave specific instructions. <S> I hope I'm not being morbid, but my mom is in a better place now and I only hope to give advice that might prove helpful. Good luck!

MAJ,
I can relate. At college graduation and before my commissioning I was hospitalized and told I was type 1 diabetic. I didn't even know what being diabetic was - I was athletic and going into the marines as a pilot, but with that diagnosis my career track for the last 23 years (10 of which were flying) was killed.
You'll get through it - just stay positive and as everyone else said, be obsessive about getting better. I returned to flying a year later after the diagnosis.

My mother has had two bouts of colon cancer in the past two years. She's luckily doing well, but the CHEMO was the worst part. It will kill your hunger and sap your energy. She still got through it though stronger than anyone else she encountered at the hospital going through the same thing though. Everyone always asked how she was doing it so well and she gave all the credit to taking alternative supliments/vitamins and stuff as suggested by her friends (I remeber vitamin D was a big one I think). I highly recomend researching and trying some of that stuff, it really did make a difference even though the CHEMO will still make you feel under the weather.
Seeing as you mentioned politics a little, I'll try my luck in explaining the odd-ball opinion/experiene to come out of my mothers whole ordeal too. My parents are quite conservative in their older age (but they grew up in the 60s and 70s, were total hippies like everyone else at the time). My mom was trying a lot of medications from her doctor and stuff during her CHEMO to help with her hunger and apetite (a dozen or so different types, each one didnt work or did something bad to her), she just didnt have the desire to eat and when she did it was a piss-poor amount. Me being a lot younger and more liberal currently in my youth than they are in their age, suggested just a small amount of medical pot/dope before she ate to try and fix her hunger (she was a hippie, and she was desperate to be hungry again and eat a satisfying amount of food). And so after trying over a dozen different things from her doctors, this was the only thing that worked (she was hungry again and almost instantly, and she ate a good quantity of food given her circumstances every time). My parents before this point thought all medical dope was just a legal loop/gimic for stoners and hippies, and they still think that's mostly true but now also believe it's legitimacy in true medical needs of some people who say thet need it to help them.
I'm not trying to intrude upon your opinions or beliefs about this matter, I try to be very respectful about such things... but my mother went through CHEMO, and it was so hard for her and on her to go through that by the end of it all it made an impact on one of her normaly stuborn political views and introduced a belief in alternative vitamins and suppliments instead of solely relying on the latest in pharmasutical wonders (same with my father's views on the same things too).
Best of luck and hope you get well soon.

Thanks for all of the good wishes. The Aces High community is (IMHO) THE best and most caring/compassionate toward fellow AH addicts when the chips are down<S>.
I would also like to apologize for any unkind words that I might have spewed toward certain players in the heat of a disagreement (vanscrew, cmustard tuk151 to name a few) Gentlemen, please accept my most sincere apologies.
PROGRESS REPORT:
I feel good considering... I can walk/talk/laugh etc. and things are pretty normal as far as the basics go. The weird thing is that my hand/eye coordination is shot. it is like the frame rate in my brain is stuck at 6 sometimes and normal at others, so being effective as an AH pilot again is going to be an uphill battle and is going to entail relearning many of the basics. My Docs thinks that Aces High might prove therapeutic an could possibly help me to regain some of my degraded hand/eye skills over time. My wife "loved" THAT when I told her :lol
I start Chemo/Radiation therapy next week, and though I am aware of the battle upcoming, I remain optimistic and hopeful. Also I have been reminded that my wife is the most incredible woman on the planet!
:salute TO ALL OF THE ACES HIGH COMMUNITY :salute
You are the best and I look forward to the day when I can make a return to the MA

Very good :aok I enjoyed reading your post as it shows you are ready to handle anything that comes your way. Your mentally prepared and have all the support you really need at home. Stay confident and strong throughout. Do your best to weather through this bump in the road as your inner strength will help you pull through this quickly.
Best wishes to you and yours and a big salute to the Mrs.

Issue, you are in my thoughts and prayers. I kind of knw what you are going thru with respect to the getting grounded thing. Way back in 02' I was on a mission in Afghanistan one night and went to help one of our PJ's up the rope ladder while still trying to man my mini-gun. Any ways I twisted while pulling him in an messed up a few discs in my back. fast fwd 3 years later...flying with my back killin me the whole time I go to the Flt Doc and she gives me some meds. One of the rare but serious side effects was a seizure...guess what I had...a seizure. Off to Brooks AFB I go for days of tests. When I see the head neurologist in the USAF he not so gently tells me my flyin days are over (at least in the ol' USAF). I didn't pay attention to very much more of the conversation, seeing how my world had just been turned upside down. I stil haven't totally come to grips with not flying but I am working on it.
My best advice would be to find something to focus on other than not flying.

This is not old....(5 year old bumped threads are old, however, there are some still are UP, go figure)...THIS thread is for a brother who we hope is doing well, even though he had a temporary setback.
How about an update, bro?
More prayers are OTW.
We are all sure thinkin' about ya!
