Great card, I have the same one. Be sure and use the Asus driver for it because the ATI driver is awful.
Also, I recommend using ATI tray tools instead of CCC.
Also recommend using Rivatuner to overclock the fan speed on it because it runs a little warm on stock settings.

Did you check to see if the Power Requirements on this New card are the same as the 8600? If not will your PSU handle the new card?
-
Yes deth,I believe that my PSU will handle ti It is a 500WATT ENERMAX liberty PSU with 22@ on 12 volt rails..Modular cabling as well..

The 8600 you have needed 22amps. Asus (love most of their stuff) on the other hand likes to keep secrets. They are not listing the power requirements. Use Caution is all I am gonna say

I've always been an Asus fan myself. Though the only products I've ever bought from them were motherboards. And I've never owned an ATI card since my first IBM aptiva circa 1996.
I take that back, I scavenged a Radeon 9200 for my torrent box. But I just remote desktop into that anyways.

thought rivatuner was only for nvidia cards?

Kiss that tree addiction goodbye!

4850 power draw is much lower than Nvidea cards. 500W psu should be more than ample. You will be extremely happy with this card. The performance of 4850 was close to Nvidea 9600GT(better in some areas and less in others). I believe 4850 was better with 3d graphics over 9600. Hopefully ATI have the driver issues figured out. From 3870 and up the cards were running warm but they all should now have a bios update. I had 2- 3870 (512)crossfired cards and benchmarked 3dmark06 at 16,000. with 1 card I was benching 13,000 which 4850 would be higher. I ran AMD 9850 quad core with the 3870's when I benched.
Eagler. Rivatuner can be used on ATI cards but are limited in settings. As said abouve fan speed can be adjusted on ATI cards using Riva.

I stay maxed out at 60 FPS (vertical sync turned on). But then AH is processor dependant and I have an E6850. In other games that are more graphics card dependant it runs smooth as well. Not as smooth as what my 8800GTX did, but nice enough. Not to scare you but I did have a problem with it though. After I installed it I kept getting a "[Problem]Unknown PCI Device" and had to download a hotfix from MS. In case you need it, it's "kb888111". Then I had to disable the ATI function driver for High Definition Audio or I would get screen stutters in game. Now the card runs nice, but if you asked before hand I wouldn't have recommended it. I would go back with Nvidia in a heartbeat if I had the spare cash.

I use it to adjust the fan, it works a lot better than SmartDoctor that ASUS puts out. Beyond that it's not much use.

No they haven't figured the drivers out yet. ATI drivers are pitiful and I've tried the latest ones...and I read some where, don't ask me where cause I don't remember, that if you update the BIOS on the card it voids the warrenty. This maybe wrong, but I'm not going to chance it.

Thanks for the info lambo..I have an e8400 wolfdale OC'ed to 4.0,and will also be adding a total of 4 gig of ram.Hopefully it will make up for it..With my current 8600GT I max at 72 VS on,but it does waver at times in heavy graphics..I am hoping the 4850 will be MUCH better than that...

Falcon,
Lambo is on right track. Although these ATI cards are good and cheap(I returned 3870 and 4870 x 2) the cards and driver/bios issues were huge. To be fair to ATI they may have solved them in last 4 months but I went Nvidea GTX280. You may want to price out 9800GTX. 4850 and 9800GTX performance are close. My Nvidea install/drivers are painless.
-
Just FYI, as it is pertinent. The current crop of ATI cards and drivers work fine with Aces High II. There are no driver issues at this time, with the 48xx series and the current driver.
However, I would not install the ATI Catalyst Control Center, nor the ATI sound card driver. Just install the basic driver, then grab Ray Adams ATI Tools and use it for anything advanced.
By the way, the 4850 Toxic from Sapphire, runs pretty cool and very quiet. It is also overclocked from the ATI standard reference card.
-
Skuzzy,I looked up Ray's Ati tools, and looks very nice..I guess I will just download it and "RUN" it and it will know where to go??
As far as the basic drivers,do you mean just download ASUS drivers which come with it,or go to ATI's site and find some other one??
I will be getting it Wenesday...

The ATI driver didn't run as smooth for me as the Asus driver did. I actually downloaded the driver from the Asus FTP site, it isn't released on the main site yet. I got it from here ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/vga/ATI/ From that point I followed Skuzzy's advice and glad I did :)
