Title: Music while flying?
Post by: Hamish on November 04, 2000, 03:05:00 PM
Anyone know how i can play an MP3 or something along those lines while flying? I dunno, i'd just love to fly to "dirty deeds doen dirt cheap" by AC/DC but can't figure out how to get it to work   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

How about a fiendish device known for that very property.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/eek.gif) It's called a <gasp> stereo system! If you put it in the very same room you are playing in and turn it on it might just play whatever tunes you want to listen to.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/tongue.gif)

Thank you for that stunning piece of info, but when ya got a headset on, and the wife's watching TV, it's not conducive to playing music while flying.

I know one thing that might work. Use the Windoze CD Player to crank a CD while the game is running. Nothing better than having AC/DC cranked during a sortie   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Please keep your inflamatory posts to yourself, thanks. I am asking a simple question, because i'd like to listen to rock and roll while i fly, unless you have something constructive to suggest, please refrain from attempting to create a flamewar here.

Thanks RAM, hadn't thought of using realplayer to play it, was only trying winamp, which doesn't work. Now i got it goin, and appreciate the Assist  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Decoding of MP3s takes very little CPU power.

I know media player works while running Ah, winamp wont. Best thing is burn a cd and listen to that.

Hamish, you must have direct-x installed (you must cause you can play AH  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) ), and as part of that comes direct-sound. If you soundcard can handle it (and most modern, non-budget ones can) will let Direct sound manage up to 64 (i think) virtual channels of sound. So all you have to do is make sure that:
- Aces High uses Direct sound (it must as it has no problems with 3rd party stuff like roger wilco). That was easy.
- and your software mp3 player uses direct-sound. Most audio programs have a setting where you can select your 'output device'. Make sure you've select direct sound driver for your soundcard.

Then it should all work thanks to the marvels of direct-sound.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Hamish...I often use WinAMP to fly to the sounds of my entire AC/DC collection which I've converted to mp3.  The most important thing is that your sound card can play simultaneous wavs...if it can't, then you won't have luck with ANY player.  If you've got an ultra-cheap $20 sound card, then it probably won't work.  Fortunately, you can get an OEM SB Live! Value for around 50 bones.

I fly without problems, running AH (of course), WinAMP, and communicating over Roger Wilco.

Good Luck!

I subscribe it. I used to fly with music in the PII/333 and had no reduction of FPS whatsoever (and they were already prettly low  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif))

AC/DC ?????

Hehe I thought I was the only one.

Just start Realplayer or Winamp and then start Aces High.

Use alt-tab to switch back and forth to set the AH vs mp3 volume.

Then send some opponents down the "Highway to Hell"

If your soundcard can handle it is easy.

Otherwise just put a audio CD in the drive and play that instead. Less system overhead since it doesn't do anything but play the CD player though a audio cable that is connected directly to your soundcard and the soundcard is just a mixer for the sound.

I just hooked up the CD player to soundcard analog. Uses no CPU and I can operate it via the CD player panel on my PC so can easily flip CDs without ALT-TABing from AH. Works for me.  BTW, Chopin was played in the first frame of Africa (polish fighting team, you know ;-) and the fortissimo were sync'ed with the Spit dropping bombs into Axis runway ;-)

LOL Prz!  Next time you have to use the mixer to put it on your record channel so we can hear it on RW.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
