Title: "Threshold: The Blue Angels Experience" DVD ('69-'71 in the Phantoms)
Post by: Cobra516 on December 27, 2008, 12:32:03 AM
For any aviation / Blue Angels fans this is an outstanding documentary about the Blues and formation flying. It contains a lot of excellent footage from inside/outside the pit along with the radio chatter and pilot commentary.  I love the Phantom and it really looks awesome in that blue paint.   Here's a trailer I put together.

Yea I've got the old VHS copy - worn it out as well.  I first saw it when I was a kid and just keep popping it back in every once in a while, never gets old.   I looked around forever for a VHS or DVD and found that site early this year - a replacement VHS was impossible to find.

Skip was my favorite character - I get a kick out of the narration at the end when he's inverted over the desert - talking about how he graduated near the bottom of his high school class but had since then learned to concentrate. :lol  Really a shame he was killed. <S>

also ran across this, thought it was pretty interesting. In the film, at the end as the narrator's talking about the moment when you cross the threshold and realize "you've gone too far" there's a quick still shot of #4, gear up, nose high, just a few feet above the ground and I always wondered what the story was behind that, I figured he either mushed it into the ground at the bottom of a loop, or just geared it up, luckily it was the latter. Ernie Christensen (#4 pilot) found this thread and posted a few replies.

I love the Phantom

Might not say that if you had ever worked on them. Many things were a complete pain in the neck to get done on that bird.  :)

Haha, I can imagine they were maintenance hogs.

You have no idea..... :lol

To remove one engine took 8 hours. That's just the removal. Removal and reinstalling the internal gun on the F-4E took about 5 hours. Contrast this to the F-15, a complete engine change took 2 hours (not just taking one out, but replacing it), removal and reinstalling the entire gun system on an F-15 could be done in an hour and a half.

Wow, massive difference in maintenance times, it's amazing those Blues mechanics were able to keep those Phantoms operational throughout the show season.  There's a few minutes of footage in the film of them pulling an engine and doing some other stuff to it - getting it ready for the show the next day.

Nothing more beautiful than a Blue F-4 except for maybe an A-6 Intruder.

Good Vid.  :aok
