Title: Farewell to the BEERDOG…
Post by: G0ALY on December 27, 2008, 08:18:11 PM
After 13 years of best friendship, I had to put my Golden Retriever down the day after Christmas.

It is not with a sense of sadness… The loss of family and friends has caused me to know what sadness TRULY is (so let’s not dwell on that.) but instead it is more with a sense of appreciation, that I would like to give a big SALUTE to one of the world’s greatest treasures… A REALLY GOOD DOG.

For 13 years “Maddy” was my now 14-yearold daughters best friend. AND, for over 10 years this dog would bring me a cold beer no matter where I was… My wife or daughter would open the fridge, hand the pooch a beer and say, “Take it to Daddy.”… From that point on, the dog was on a mission! If I was out in the garage, they would just open the back door & she would bring it to me, never dropping it, not letting go, until it was in my hand.

The best beers were the ones I didn’t know were coming. My girls would just surprise me with a cold one.

This last summer her hips started giving her real problems. So I built this little trailer, and we still had our ‘walks’ around the neighborhood, but now I was the one out in front, deciding where we would go… We got a lot of waves from the good people around here. It was grand fun!

My girls already want another Golden Retriever, and we will get one soon. But the next dog will have a tough act to follow!

So, no sadness, but a big SALUTE to the ‘Beer Dog’ as she was known… And wish us best on the next furry addition to our family! I post a pic when she arrives! (Beer training will be aprox. 6 months later! LOL!)

CHEERS!

Our good ol' goofy dog Sam died in May. He was our Yellow Lab, dumber than a retarded rock (if there even is a retarded rock) but so sweet. When we were little, we used to ride on his back like a horse, and he'd always be so happy to see us, that he'd knock us down with his tail, or rack us...

I didn't cry for Sam, as I knew the day would come, but our new dog Fred, still isn't half Sam was. Hope you find a new dog that can do that beer thing for ya.

<S> to a fine friend.

We lost our Golden this year too, after years of slow decline from heart disease. Unless you've had one of these great Goldens, you can't really understand what they're like. It's like having another really great kid, one that's absolutely loyal and faithful and empathetic. We miss ours a lot.

(Favorite Midas action, one that we never trained him to do -- if we saw a rabbit in the yard, we'd just say "Intruder!" He'd come to immediate attention, trot to the back door, and wait for us to let him out. As soon as the door opened he'd silently dash into the yard and hunt the guy down. If he didn't spot the rodent right away, he'd look up at us and watch for us to point him the right direction. Best of all, he would only chase to the exact property line and stop dead, figuring he'd get the guy next time.)

We got another golden, but while she's incredibly sweet she's just about hopeless otherwise. She is literally terrified of plastic bags, and desperately scrabbles her way behind furniture on windy days. After hearing our new washing machine beep once, she now has entire body tremors whenever we make her go to the laundry room. Oh well...

:salute to Maddy. Goldens are great family dogs. My father has three of them. I call them Larry,Mo,and Curly.
CJ the youngest and biggest likes to rifle through briefcases. If you go to RIT and the instructor tells you the dog ate your homework you had better believe it.

We lost our boxer Belle in October after 11 years of faithful service.  We got a boxer because we had two young girls at the time and read that one could find no better dog with young kids than a boxer.

Eleven years could not have proven that more true.  She put up with tugged ears, punched snouts, and attempted horsey-rides more than one can count, yet she NEVER ONCE snapped at the yung'uns.

Dogs are better than people, no question about it.

 :salute Sorry to here that.

We had to put 2 of our 3 dogs to sleep in the past 2 years.

For some reason they just got into fights with each other(Real fights, Blood, spit, and shoovels).

We lost our Golden to cancer a few years back, and it about broke my heart.  I can't imagine a better family dog.  We were just last night laughing with a couple good friends who live a few blocks away about how when our dog Sam would decide to wander off, it was always to their house.  They told how a couple times they came home to find our dog on the driveway or on their doorstep waiting for them, and we laughed about our son when, noticing the dog was missing, would go to their house and wait for him to show up.  (and he always did).

We have a Lab now our oldest son asked us to take when he was deploying to Afghanistan for 15 months, and now the dog is a permanent fixture.  He is a good dog to be sure, but not what the Golden was.

I am sorry about your loss, dogs are unquestionably man's best friend.  They are loyal, loving, protective, playful, and overall, a great friend.

I don't know if using conundrum is the right word, but it's unfair that dogs only get to live for a limited amount of time.  I wish scientists would capable of discovering a way to allow dogs to live longer, healthier lives.

I have a king German shepherd, he turned six today.  I can tell that his hips are starting to bother him sometimes.  I love this more then life itself.

Well, it’s only been a week… But we already found a new pup. Another golden retriever.

We got our choice from a littler of 6 females (and 1 male) and picked this little cutie.

My daughter wants to name her “Sunshine” which is just fine with me. I can call her “Sunny”… and I’ve yelled dumber names at the top of my lungs.

We pick her up this Sunday evening. Beer training is only a few short months away... Just in time for the hot summer!

CHEERS! and wish us luck, goaly

With every dog Ive had to say goodby to its gotten harder and harder. My last hunting dog was so hard I havnt been able to bring myself to get another. We have two lap dogs now, a boxer and a Bichon. I told my wife its going to be her job to take them in that final time but in the end I know its going to be on me. Its a terrible thing to lose your dog man, I feel for you and your family.

They are smart tho arent they? Most of all goldens. All my dogs Ive only had to say, "go with your mother", and they leave the room with my wife every time. Ive had friends who hunted goldens and they always were wonderful animals to be around. :salute to Beer Dog.
