Title: Watch for motorcycles.
Post by: Roundeye on December 27, 2008, 08:27:30 PM
Please.

A friend of mine was just hit a couple of hours ago and is in the ER in critical condition.  It does not look good.  This happened less than a mile and less than 2 hours after I was merged into and nearly ran off the road by a cager.

I biker has to drive like they are out to get you, because even though they don't realize it, they ARE out to get you.

I hope your buddy recovers.

Update:

He's hanging in there for now but has a long rough road ahead.  Broken femur with large hole in leg where bone came out, shattered wrist and numerous bruises and abrasions.  Several surgeries and a graft are in his near future.

He was going the speed limit (40mph) and riding point with a few others who witnessed the whole thing with a front-row seat.  Some old dude in a minivan with his head up his --- changed this young man's life forever (and almost took it)....all because he did not LOOK before pulling out.

A sincere THANK YOU to those who offered prayers.   :salute

One of my best friends, a guy who was like a brother to me for 30 years, was killed by a fool who was out clowning with two girls and ran a stop sign. Pretty stupid and pointless really, and he was only about 2 miles from home. The fool got away with vehicular homicide, no charges filed. Within two weeks I lost a very close friend and two customers to stupid people pulling out in front of them. A fourth was killed two miles from the shop, within the same two weeks.

Man, as a motorcycle rider myself (be it dirtbikes, some motox racing...), my sympathies go out. Seen some guys get beat up pretty bad, but not like that. Best of luck.

Hope he comes out the other side well.  What sort of gear was he wearing?  I'm thinking about buying a bike next summer, but I probably won't if all the safety gear in the world won't prevent those sort of injuries.

Hope he comes out the other side well.  What sort of gear was he wearing?  I'm thinking about buying a bike next summer, but I probably won't if all the safety gear in the world won't prevent those sort of injuries.

He was riding a HD Night Train.  He had a helmet (Ala. state law).  As mentioned though even if he had the most expensive top-of-the-line jacket with armor and the nicest full-face helmet, it would not have changed things in this type of accident with the injuries he has.

I ride a HD Softail Custom, similar in size and performance as the Night Train.  I ride defensively, assuming everyone does not see me and try to anticipate what I would do if that car pulls out of merges onto me.  I sucks, but it's the only chance at survival in a world where people just do not look for motorcycles.   Had that been me in his shoes, I'm not sure it would have turned out any different.  It happened at the last second and he had nowhere to go and rather than T-bone (OUCH), he layed it down.  The bike slid into the van but stood up when it hit, crushing the extremities on his right side.  It could have been much worse.

I was just merged onto hours before above mentioned accident and handled it well even though it caught me off guard (then followed the p---y for miles trying to get him to pull over so we could "discuss" things   ).

If you get a bike, just remember that nobody sees you and the ones that do are all out to get you.  Your only other real friends on the road are also on 2 wheels.  :salute

I want to get a Ninja 250.  Planning on spending about 1k on the bike and 1k on gear.  I'm already an incredibly cautious driver, I imagine that I would be downright paranoid on a bike.

Mav is exactly right. I've ridden nearly all my life. You gotta be on your toes. I hope your friend pulls through to ride again.

Mav were you a motor? I trained with some a few years ago and they taught to always be faster than traffic. Was a great tool in keeping us safe out there. PD bikes hurt when they land on you.

No need to be paranoid.  Just aware.  Also, do not be scared of a motorcycle.......respect it.

I've kicked more than one door of a car that tried to take my lane because they weren't paying attention. unfortunately it's like spitting into the wind. The car always wins.

Hope your friend pulls thru. <S>

Been in 3 bike accidents in my life....  All of 'em sucked....

1st time, I was hit by a guy on his cell-phone yelling at his girlfriend....  He drove away after he saw me get up....  Another dude I was with discreetly followed the guy home(I told him to)  after calling me an ambulance..  Received a broken wrist, broken ankle, and over 30 stitches all together...

2nd time, I was rear ended by a certain ethnic man and landed on the hood of the guys car while shattering his windshield with my helmet....  He was upset about his windshield and
told me I'd better gave insurance...  The cops thought otherwise....   :D

3rd time (a charmer), had a girlfriend on the back..  Pretty much all I want to say about that one....

I wish your buddy the best... :salute

That could be read a couple of different ways.

The broken wrist, broken ankle and over 30 stitches was the damage to the car driver, right?  (I hope) :devil

"Damndest thing, officer....it wasn't that bad of an accident, yet the car driver managed to hit the steering wheel 17 times....folded it up like a taco"

I always, always tell my sons "watch out for cars, they're not watching out for you" when they ride their bicycles.  They've got these little moped-type motor bike thingies as well.  And I'm sure once they're all old enough they'll want motorcycles.  I reckon I'll still be saying the same thing to them on the phone when they're grown, out of the house, and riding motorcycles.
