Are you using iTunes?

yes

iPod sucks, and because of this, if your old puter is kaput, you are screwed. Learn a lesson and invest in a USB hard drive.
-
Ipods are over-rated over-priced pieces of junk.
Buy a normal Mp3 player that all you have to do is plug in the USB cable and drag and drop the songs onto it.
An excellent one is one of the RCA H series mp3 players. A lot cheaper and all you do is plug it in and start moving mp3's

i have had an ipod for 4 years and have never had a single problem with it. Other than not knowing how to transfer my music, i can't think of anything negative that has plauged me.

Are you using iTunes?
Come on dude, if he's using an iPod he's using iTunes. The only way to manage an iPod is with iTunes. And therein lies the problem with the iPod. With a "normal" MP3 player, you puter sees it as a USB jump drive and you can move files and folder on and off it without using an application. The average iPod user is too lazy to manage their own music folder so they let iTunes do it for them. Most don't even know the filepath to their music on their puter. When using an iPod, if your machine bites the dust, unless you have a USB hard drive, your music is gone FOREVER. Chuck the iPod, get a USB hard drive and a "plays for sure" MP3 player, and chalk it all up as experience.

yes
Plug in your iPod, go to the 'store' pull down menu in iTunes, and select 'authorize computer', sync it and you should be set.

Does that work for purchased music? I lost all mine after the great computer meltdown of 08 a few weeks back. I haven't even downloaded i-tunes since the Resurection.
BTW I have learned my lesson about the external hard drive for these sorts of things.

It ONLY works for purchased music, I had to re-rip all of my CD's after the system restore in which I found this out.

Everyone isn't following him, hes saying from his ipod onto his computer
Ipods are stupid in this way that they prevent you from doing that
there are various programs online that you can find that allow you to drag music from your ipod to your computer

I know he is. When I had to my system restore, I had none of my iTunes music on my computer, did the steps above and got it back from my iPod.

No, they don't.

There is 3rd party software that addresses these exact problems. I forget the name but some googling should turn them up. They allow you to manage music between the ipod and itunes (computer) without the restrictions of the itunes software, which is in place to try to limit copyright infringements (sharing music).

iTunes is the worst POS I've seen in years

Factory they do.
I enjoy my Zen V Plus, works like a charm. Plug 'er in, highlight your music, right click, and hit transfer, or just type in the file path, open up a new window, and drag and drop. Easy as that.

Again, no, they don't. I transferred iTunes purchased music from my iPod to my 'new' computer using absolutely nothing but my iPod and iTunes. Just because people can't spend 5 minutes doing a Google search to find out how to do it doesn't mean that the software prevents you from doing it.

Plenty of apps to copy from ipod to hard drive.. Like others said.. If you have disk use enabled, you can even grab em thru windows from ipod_control/music. They'll be renamed to four letter alphabetic names tho.
Over 20 ipod managers out there:

motherland, music bought off itunes i believe is easy to transfer, of course I wouldn't know since I've never bought a song from them, my Itunes and ipod is all my cd's, I already had a huggggge collection of music before all this technology took off so I had no need to buy from them, anyway, music off cd's and other sources besides Itunes cannot be taken from your ipod onto your computer, I guess it's an anti-pirating measure, but as other have said before google itunes uploader or something like that and you should find a program.

i did try useing the uploaders i found on google, but i would rather not spend 30 dollars on a program that i will need once.
