Please reconsider the decision to only have successfull landings on the runways. There is nothing more frustrating than to fly a badly shot up aircraft back to base, land it on the base, and then end up two feet off the side of the runway and get a ditch for your efforts.
I understand the need to make everyone use the runway, but there are enough structures scattered around the field that the runway is the safest place to land and take off anyway. If someone really doesn't want to use the runway he is just going to land wherever and taxi to the runway.
IMHO it would enhance gameplay to make it so that if you landed your aircraft on the base it counted as a successfull landing. It is already in the game that if stop near a VH in a plane then it counts as a successfull landing.

There is also a great felling of success when you do get the landing down. Can't have the success with out the posiblity to fail.

HT, for 1.08 can you remove the ability to safely land at enemy fields? Those should be counted as captures not safe landings.

It's a pretty damn good feeling just getting some of these birds back to the base and landing at all, but to get it counted as a ditch if you end up two feet off the side of the runway? Maybe it's just me.
How many of those bottles would we have to buy to get this implemented? ;)

Actually I would go the other way..... crippling an aircraft on the runway (eg with broken gear) should still be a ditch.

Why? Hundreds of WWII airbases had only a big grass field. Fighters could take off the way they wanted to (yes, yes, provided you have the wind in your face ;)).

I think that, after a tough dogfight, getting the damaged kite home and down near the rwy should provide more reward. Isnt weird that landing a vulched enemy airbase is a success?

In many cases real fighters/bombers got back home with damaged gears and a good gear-up landing at home, even off the rwy, should count like a successful landing.

The reward is you being able to walk away from the aircraft for a successful ditch. I agree that landing at an enemy airstrip should not count as a successful landing tho'. Maybe in 1.08 if you land at an enemy base in anything but a goonie, a bunch of troops run out of the map room and fill your plane full of lead! :D

I say keep successful landing at enemy airbase and activate re-fueling pad too!
I don't know if this is a true story but I heard of an American pilot who landed at a German airbase, refuled and took off again. I think refuling at an enemy base would be fun because the ack or an enemy could spawn at any moment. However a successful landing upon returning to the tower from an enemy runway doesn't seem correct, it should be a capture.

HiTech, please reconsider.
If, I were C.O. of a real WWII fighter squdron (yeah I know, here we go), standing orders at MY field would be:
DO NOT land shot up aircraft upon the runway! DO NOT risk tying up operations for the rest of the squadron! Violators will be shot! Have a nice day!

What is even more frustrating is when you get home and your fuel is gone when you land. Even if one wheel is off the runway when you stop, you get a ditch instead of sucessful landing.
Other than having no fuel left, my A/C was in perfect shape. Couldn't the grond crew give me a little push so I could have a sucesful landing instead?
Heck, if you want to take HTs stance, why not require people to .ef in a fighter hanger? I don't think the ground crews would be very happy if all the piolts were to leave A/C all over the runway, wherever they happened to come to a stop :D
-
Oh yeah, our airports are pretty weirds: car-bombs, IL-2s spawning to kill troops, pilots leaving their a/c parked on the rwys, toilettes (dangerous for wings) in the refuelling areas ... :) Talking about realism and rewards, nothing is like a pee while ghost ground crew refill your plane :D

One question:
Did i hea right, if i land at an active nme base with ack down and noone killing me while landing. I get a "you landed succesful" message when i hit the return to tower button?? And it does count in the stats as a save landing?
If yes, this would have saved me real often from stupid radiator shot out capturings.

Yes Naudet, hangers up, ack down (safer, you know), no nasty respawners and you can land succesfully. But be sure to have your wheels on the rwy :)

Hey Voss, remember? It's just a game.

why even have a runway or base then.?
if you can land/ditch/up anywhere whats the point?
even if ht decided to expand the safe landing zone to cover the entire air base people who came up just short of it would want it to be extended.
I almost wish for the wb type "soft terrain" where if ya dont make it home your wheels sink into the soft mud.

In reality many airbases in europe permitted a fighter to take off in ANY direction. They were a huge grass area with support structures around em.
I think any aircraft that comes to a stop anywhere within the field's boundaries should count as a Return to Base Safely. Perhaps a smaller multiplier than a Successful Landing. This covers the life of a pilot saved, which is more important in war than the machine.

I agree with Skurj, provide a "ditched at field" category and increase the multiplier.
