Title: Most ridiculous home Christmas lighting
Post by: Widewing on December 29, 2008, 06:56:09 PM
I guess this forum is as good as any other for this, inasmuch as the topic is basically architecture enhanced (if you're generous) by lighting....

The house in the images below is far and away the most obscene in terms of Christmas lighting anywhere near where I live. Every square foot of the house, including the roof is covered in equa-spaced lights. Front, back, sides, roof and they even wrapped the sign post on the corner of the property. Note that the lights are patterned red, green red, green...... No breaks in the pattern either.

While I had my Canon in the car, I didn't plan to take any photos after dark. Thus, I didn't have a tripod or even a monopod with me. So, I tried to hold the camera as steady as possible. The shot of the rear shows much more blur, but I had to hold the camera well above my head to shoot over the 6-foot fence surrounding the back of the home. I took that shot just to illustrate that EVERY square foot of the house was covered in lights. In the first image, note the Toyota Prius parked in front of the house (at the extreme left), as if this family was really thinking "green".

Best christmas movie made. My favorite part is when me punches the Santa, and then drop kicks it.

I'd like to see the home owner's sock drawer given his penchant for pattern and order.....

That home looks like stock footage shot for a 50-60s sci-fi flick.  :D

I hate these people, don't know who they are, what they do, where they are from and I don't care.  I hate them.

The thing I'm impressed with is that the white lights on the tree go all the way to the top instead of just the bottom branches as long as the first string would reach  :aok

I would estimate about 4,500 light bulbs of the C9 type (9 watts) were used. This doesn't count the mini-lights in the trees and around the property line.

So, lets do some simple math.. 4,500 x 9 watts = more than 40 kilowatts of power... Or, 4,500 x 9 watts / 110 VAC = 368 amps! This guy draws more power than Basra.

They should be able to see this house from the International Space Station...

It's probably visible from Jupiter.

And I bet you the guy's an engineer of some kind.  Or maybe a string-theory physicist like Sheldon in The Big Bang Theory.

Look closer, the stop sign is straight it's the house tilting from the weight of the lights.

Anyone seen the video with the whole house and garden computer controlled christmas lights? They pulsate to the music like discolights.

That's far worse than that house.

Here's one example: http://media.putfile.com/Wizards-of-Winter-Christmas-Lights

You boys just wait until next year when there's more time and money.
Sorry the pic was a little blurry but when you're using a P.O.S. you can't help it.

Where do you store all that crap!! :O
All my lights and decorations fit into 3 of those large plastic containers. each one is just small enough to fit through my attic opening. I have a good sized attic but, i got other stuff to store up there as well. Not to mention the cost of buying all that stuff and then the electric bill  :cry. unless they have a genny running it all :noid

We had a neighbor that use to use over 300,000 white lights, first time he turned the lights on he blew out the transformer for the block. Next day he had them installing one just for his house and putting more outlets through out the yard. You can't go 10 feet without finding an outlet on that house and there is one at every tree in the yard. the next year we didn't even put out lights, just a chezzy flashing sign that pointed at their house.

Tsk, where is the holiday spirit?  Star of wonder and all that.  Not nearly as obnoxious as the Red Hat Society, and that's all year long.

Yeah mom. No doubt they time code the music like we do with video. From there all you have to do is match the light sequence to the music. You really dont have to either listen to the music or look at the lights to do it. I would like to get a look at the digital sequence software used for this particular piece. No doubt what happens is that each frame of audio is time coded and specific lights are assigned, on or off, to each frame of time code. It looks far to accurate to have been sequenced by ear alone.

Meh ~ I was lost at "time code." Sounds like man's work to me.

That depends on the hardware used. If they're using X-10 or Z-Wave, there's really no sequencer for it. It has to be hard coded by hand & ear.

Any DMX controlling software is capable of doing it.  Especially hooked up in a daisy chain.

I do it at weddings a lot with my DJ company, but obviously on a much smaller scale.

Just start with changes matching up with the BPM (beats per minute) of the song, and tweak it from there.  The possibilities are endless.

Not an arduous task if one is already familiar with the software, but very time consuming.
