Title: From Russia with Love
Post by: republic on December 31, 2008, 09:00:09 AM
Anyone up for the Eastern front next?  I haven't seen National Socialists vs Communists in a bit.

Maybe give the allies a CV so the blue plane pilots can fly also.  Seems like I remember Shifty mentioning a historical setup similar to that...I'll dig around and see what I can find...

FJORDs FTW!

We can sub 38's for the Mossies in fjord runs ala 633 squadron.  Or use the Mossies themselves.  :pray

 :salute

Well I'd kinda like to see mainly Soviet airframes/tanks.  We rarely do that, and the Yak is sorely underrated in the AvA.

No it isn't.  It's over-rated in gas consumption though  :cry

Fun plane to fly, better all around than the LGay IMO.

Still rather have fjords to fly through, but if it's rooskies, then rooskies it will be.

Well it's not really an 'either/or' situation lol  We've plenty of weeks to do everything people want.  :)

Oh all right then.  I'll fly the Yaks  :salute

But I still would like to see New Guinea with USAAF iron, and the Fjords just once.

2x fuel burn takes the fun out of the Russian planes.  1.5x would be ok, perhaps.

Looks good, maybe add the F4F as a sub for the Buffalo?  Maybe appeal to a few other squads that way.

Loves that series of books, currently on the third in the series. Anyone that likes reading I suggest 633 Squadron by Frederick E Smith. Excellent reads. Here's a list of them all:

1.) 633 Squadron
2.) 633 Squadron: Operation Rhine Maiden
3.) 633 Squadron: Operation Crucible
4.) 633 Squadron: Operation Valkryie
5.) 633 Squadron: Operation Cobra
6.) 633 Squadron: Operation Titan
7.) 633 Squadron: Operation Crisis
8.) 633 Squadron: Operation Thor
9.) 633 Squadron: Operation Defiant

Sorry not trying to hijack the thread  :lol

The aircraft

The film features real de Havilland Mosquitos, an aircraft nicknamed the "Wooden Wonder" because of its primary construction material. Although the Royal Air Force (RAF) had recently retired the type, civilian operators had leased mostly former converted bomber examples (TT Mk 35) to the RAF for target-towing. Scouring RAF bases at Exeter, South Devon, Henlow, Shawbury and the Central Flying School at Little Rissington provided not only authentic aircraft but also vehicles and equipment of the war.

Eight Mosquitos were primarily used, five airworthy and others that could not fly but could be taxied on runways or used as set dressing. The airworthy TT 35 Mosquitos were converted to resemble a fighter-bomber variant (FB Mk VI). The TT 35 models had their clear nosecones and side windows painted over and dummy machine gun barrels fitted. The fourth airworthy Mosquito was a T3 with a solid nose which only required the fitting of dummy gun barrels. It lacked the two-stage Merlins, V-shaped windscreen and bulged bomb bay of the TT 35s. At least one surplus Mosquito was destroyed in a simulated crash scene.

The Mosquitos used in the film were:

    * RS709 Flew in the film
    * RS712 Flew in the film
    * RS715 Cockpit section only
    * TA639 Flew in the film
    * TA719 Flew in the film
    * TJ118 Cockpit section only
    * TV959 at Bovington airfield, but did not fly in the film
    * TW117 Flew in the film

No original German aircraft were available so Messerschmitt Bf 108 aircraft were used to represent the Messerschmitt Bf 109.[8]

The camera aircraft, a North American B-25 Mitchell, appears in the film, dropping Bergman back into Norway. His original escape from Norway is in a Miles Messenger.

The movie is okay. IMO BoB is the the best old WWII movie.

If you haven't seen it "Saints and Soldiers" is a pretty good film considering (from what Iv read) is was made from under one million dollars.

I can't find that anywhere.  Did you get online or something?  From everything I read about it, it looked to rival BoB's place as #1
