Title: Realistic radio distortion for VOX
Post by: Cobra516 on December 31, 2008, 04:06:03 PM
Again, asking for too much,  :lol

I think it'd be really slick to give the VOX a remake and add realistic radio distortion/sound of talking in an O2 mask - maybe randomly throw in some garble/squeals/radio interferance while someone's making a call.

Do many of these wishlist request make it into the game?

I vote no on this one. We already have distortion with people that have the mic in their mouth, or have it to far away, or have the volume set to low or to high. This would just make things worse. :)

Some wishes do, but remember any change takes time to code.

Lately Vox only works about half the time as it is.
Why would we want to make it worse? LOL

I agree with NHawk though for the reasons he votes nay.
Dont know which is worse.
the ones whose volume is set so low you cant hear em.

OR THE ONES THAT JUST ABOUT BLOW YOUR EARDRUMS OUT EVERY TIME THEY KEY UP THE MIC

I have literally had to rip the headphones from my head while in the middle of a fight because it hurt my ears so bad.

Rather have a vox setting where no matter what level they broadcast at. The volume comes through the same on the receiving end.
Based on how loud the individual has it set.

Only if it agrees with HiTech's vision of his game and how he wants it. I would assume they do read the Wishlist, but they are extremely selective as to what ideas have merit.

I see it as a game of bingo, if you call the number you want, the caller wont call it  :lol
same for the wishlist

It's a neat idea, but I say no.  There is enough VOX oddities without adding artificial ones.

Alright so leave out the random squeals / garbled comms, but add a realistic sound to the transmissions, if anyone's flown on VATSIM - the built in voice comm it uses sounds exactly like a real radio - much clearer than the AH VOX, but has that distinct radio quality to it.

Yea, I know they're never going to revise the VOX :lol

Vox can be frustratiing.  Some members of my squad cant be heard (low volume).  Others I can hear clear as a bell.  No ammount of tweaking seems to help the folks with poor volume.  I.E.  ....turn up mic gain ....get closer to mic etc etc.

My issues with people being too loud is mostly because some folks are so quiet I have to turn my overall volume up.  This make the folks with proper gain be too loud.  Mostly I wind up trying to average it out as best i can.

I do like your idea though .

...there is a slider in VOX labeled "effect" that does some of what you ask for.

Helm ...out

LMAO
Paranoid?

Im not sure I even remember how you come across on vox.
But if people are telling you your too loud..or too soft. You proaobly are

I wasnt referring to anyone specifically.
There are lots of people that come across either way.Too soft so I can hardly hear them (sometimes so soft I cant understand a word)
And others like they have a megaphone turned up full blast 2 inches from my ear.
I personally would prefer a setting if its possible to have everyone come in at the same volume that I set it at regardless of how loudly they have their stuff set.

Range vox squelch.  Please!

Yeah that would be a very nice option.  It's nearly impossible to maintain effective comm with squad mates in a hot environment with people jamming the vox.

Luckly you can test how your vox sounds to others by entering your game ID in Radio V and using the T Key.  You will hear your own voice, you can then adjust your sound levels to suite.

It would sound cool if it sounded like Gold Leader in Star Wars...then it could match up w/ my LA7/Xwing fighter sound and lasers. But, probably best left as is.

Have you ever sat behind a radio stack and had to listen to actual radio transmissions?  No thank you.

what we really need is a dot command to set individual vox volumes.

[gameID] is coming through at 110db and everyone else is normal level?    .volume [gameID] 0-100 would set the volume for that person on your computer. 0 could replace squelch function and would reamin next tiem you log in (can i hear, perma squelch at last?). Default setting would be 50, so you have a scale either side to for too quiet or too loud.

 :aok

Radios in airplanes, for the most part they sound quite clear, from my experience, but with that distinct radio quality, occasionally you'll get squeals / garble.

Some peoples mics are bad enough (CR2008)

I think everyone's misunderstanding - if you made it sound like a real radio, the quality would be many times better than it currently is.  It wouldn't help or hurt the issue with people's mics being loud/soft.   They'd just be loud/soft with better quality,  :lol     Doesn't matter, it won't ever be implemented, just fun to kick around.

Thats High Frequency band distortion. I play with the HF set in the plane all the time. Its fun to find some nut paranoid spouting off about racial armegeddon, the illuminati and the CFR and tune a few cycles away and distort him.
