Title: Battle of Berlin (air) 1943-1944
Post by: oakranger on January 01, 2009, 05:46:10 PM
Here is a good FSO event that the FSO staff should make up.  This is the Battle of Berlin, a British campaign from November 1943 to March 1944.  The raids will be on Berlin, Mannheim, Leverkusen, Frankfurt, Essen, Bochum, Cologne,  Düsseldorf, Leipzig and Ludwigshafen.  What make this event a little different is that it will be a night time event, which will make a challenge for all of us, and RAF had 4 types of aircraft in the battle, only two of them we can used.

Aircrafts:
RAF
Lancaster
Mosquito
Handley Page Halifax (but we don’t have these yet, we may substitute something different)

LW
FW 190 A5 (the A3 was originally used as a night fighter, but we don’t have it on AH)
ME 110 C (the G model was originally used because it was a night fighter, but we don’t have it on AH)
JU 88 (the C and D model was used in the battle)
109 G2

The Ju-88 in Aces High has only a single FF MG as armament, it cant be used as a night fighter, sadly. We do have the Bf-110G in AH, btw. The Fw190A-8 was used as a night fighter as well, we also have that, as well as the Bf 109G-6, both were used as night fighters (Wild Boar) in 1944. I would really like to see a Heavy Fighter varient of the Ju-88, like the Ju-88C, which could double as a night fighter Ju-88G in a setup like that.

The RAF used B-25s, and Boston IIIs, I would say they could possibly find a place in that setup as well, depending on the time frame. The Mosquito B.IV bomber is not yet available, but the Mosquito F.B. VI is.

...Its a design that I have on the back burner, but the problems of gamma settings ect do make it a challenge to run. I would like to see it done at some point.

Have you tried Baumers new settings with Fog etc. Gamma cant help at all.

There's no point. The point of FSO is a theme for combat. Night bombing is the focused attempt to avoid detection and contact at all costs.

Oh, and I don't think squire flies LW much. The Ju88 has 1x 7mm MG in the nose. Not a 20mm MG/FF cannon. The Ju88G models also had improved engines and performace, and were much faster than our 1941/42 Ju88. It wouldn't be much of a stand-in either way.

Forward Firing Machine Gun, FF MG, *not* MG-FF, as in the 20mm.

Yes, I am looking at the fog settings, they do hold promise.

A month or two ago after one of the snapshots the CM ran a night mission for fun using new settings. Visibility was nil until the enemy was right on top of you even after adjusting gamma.

My question is, if this night setup gets run for FSO would radar be left on (especially considering radar played a fairly major roll in night action)? Otherwise it's going to be virtually impossible for the Axis fighters to have even a chance of intercepting the bombers before they reach their IPs since you'd have to be in icon range before you'd be able to see them.

I am sure the FSO staff will come up with something.  Turning on the radar would be the way but will you see everyone thats on you side too?
