Yes, we actually are using at the college where I work for a pilot program this semester.

It was Created by CMU.  Lots of schools are using it, and it is a good tool.  I would recommend waiting until the next iteration comes out.  There are supposed to make some drastic GUI changes, and it would suck to just learn it this way, then have to modify that learning.  The text they have put out are great aswell.

I believe it is a step above Squeak, and when I used it, I failed miserably, because I hadn't read enough about what to do. That said, after spending time with Squeak, I want to get Alice again.

As I said above, i highly recommend purchasing the test they have for the grade levels you have.  They are very helpful in teaching the concepts as well as the methods.
