Need to see a DXDIAG output.

Also note, if you install the game in another folder, rather than the default "Program Files", then a number of things will work better.  Vista just does a number of bad things to programs installed in the "Program Files" folder.

In fact you will see better performance if you install the game to a second hard drive (not a second partition) if you are using a Vista system. Please tell us you are not using Norton.

Norton + Vista = Well, you might as well rent a wood chipper and toss your computer in it.  It will alleviate a number of frustrations.

DisclaimerThe above is meant to be taken as levity.  Although there is a truth to it, actually throwing a computer into a wood chipper is not advised no matter how irritated you are.  If you chose to do so, it is your choice and I cannot, nor will not, be held accountable.

Thanks for the respone. I'm not sure how to find the dxdiag output. The anti virus is trend and the spy is webroot spysweeper. I do turn both off when I run AH. I had previously installed ah to a non prog file directory. The only thing i may have done wrong was to then copy ALL the files from the original (programfiles) directory into the new one so it would have all my skins and views saved.

Thanks Hodag

Start -> Run. Type in: dxdiag
Press OK. Now wait for the application to load (Loading bar is on the bottom left). Afterward press, "Save all Information..." Now save the file to a location easy to find, such as your desktop. After saving the file, go to the location where you saved it and open the file. Now copy the first third (1/3) of the file and paste it in a response here.

That's your DxDiag.

Bill had little to do with Vista.  Actually he has been one of the opponents against it and has been pretty public about it.

Here are the steps to get the DXDIAG output:

1) Go to "Start" from the Windows desktop
2) Select "Run" from the pop up menu
3) In the Run dialog box, type DXDIAG and press <ENTER>
4) After a few seconds the DXDIAG utility will be ready
5) Press the "Save All Information" button
6) This will save the DXDIAG data to a file of your choice
7) Once you have done this, simply email the file to me and I can look for any issues your system might have.

NOTE:  If you do not see the "Run" option when you press the "Start" button, then right-click on the "Start" button, select "Properties", then switch the view mode to "Classic".  This will allow you to see the "Run" menu option again.

Oh Boy! Integrated stuff! Vista will not run well with all that.

Video card is barely adequate and sound I dont see any details on. 6150 is not a good Vista gaming chip.

Page file should be set manually to Minimum size: 4608 MB and Max size: 9216 MB

Post by: Skuzzy on January 05, 2009, 06:45:41 PM
It is also a dual-core AMD CPU.  You will need to run the game in Windows 98/Windows ME compatibility mode due to a bug in the AMD dual-core CPU's we happen to hit.

Right-click on the game start-up ICON, select "Properties", then select the "Compatibility" tab, check the option to run the application in compatibility mode, then select "Windows 98/Windows ME" from the drop down list.  This will force the game to run on only one core of the CPU.

Next, the 6150 video chip is really a very, very low end video device.  To have a chance at all of running the game decently, you will need to set the game resolution to 800x600, and then set the "Maximum Texture Size" to 128.

To improve the performance, you really will need to spend a lot of time disabling the various amount of background services Vista has running by default.  First off, disable the Aero desktop it if is enabled and running.  Next, kill "Superfetch" as if it a world class resource hog.

To really get the best out of your computer, you should get a decent video card.  The 6150 chip is holding back your computer and its ability to run real-time 3D graphics.

It really is a nice system strapped with a $2 video chip.

Ok i'll try the res setting, I had already read about the win98/me mode and done that. How do you shut off superfetch and the other vista bkgrnd stuff? What video card would you reccomend and roughly what can I expect to spend? I really appreciate all the help.

Thanks

At the top of the Technical Support Thread there is a sticky about how to set up for vista.  I believe that all the "hows" are in there.

There are a lot of different video cards out there. As a rule of thumb I'd spend at least $100 on one. Less than that and you'll get a card that will work, but my give you trouble when you push it in the game. First find out whether our mother board takes AGP, or PCI express. I'm guessing PCI express because you have vista and the PCI express is the newer technology. Once your sure which "type" of card you need, go to Toms Hareware. They are doing write ups on video cards all the time as well as put up nice charts to compare card to card.

Careful about a new video card.  Many HP computers cannot be upgraded as they pull the physical slots off the motherboard to save them money.  If it can be upgraded, your next concern will be the power supply.  All OEM's use just enough power supply to power the supplied components.  Adding a higher power device can cause a lot of problems.

will installing the game in another folder, rather than the default "Program Files", work better with XP too?
