I'm trying to compile a playlist for iTunes, and hoepfully a long enough one to make a full CD or two, full of songs that are obviously (either by title, lyrics, or allegory) about war. Either specific battles and wars, or war in general. Theres actually a lot of them out there, many of them very good ones, but I know I am missing most of them. Looking for help to add more to the list. If you know the artist and specific title, great, if not, even a clue to where to look will be helpful.
And in this list, I do not include lame-o crap like "American Soldier" and "God Bless the USA". Sorry. And I'm trying to keep the songs themselves modern (since the 1950s or 60s) but the subject matter doesn't have to be. Here's what I have so far-
"Paschendale" by Iron Maiden (about the WWI battle now usually known as "Third Ypres")
"Aces High" by Iron Maiden (Battle of Britain. And for those who don't believe me, look up the lyrics)
"The Trooper" by Iron Maiden ("Charge of the Light Brigade" in first person)
"Run to the Hills" by Iron Maiden (Indian Wars of the American West. Counts in my book)
"Goodnight Saigon" by Billy Joel (If you've never heard this one, find it. Its one of my favorites)
"Ballad of the Green Beret" by SSgt Barry Sadler (Lame, but I count it)
"One" by Metallica (the agony of a crippled soldier)
"War" by Edwin Starr (of course)
"Symphony of Destruction" by Megadeth (nuclear war)
"Holy Wars" by Megadeth (self explanatory)
"Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin (Invading Vikings!)
"Zombie" by The Cranberries (The Troubles in Ireland)
"Civil War" by Guns n Roses (Yeah, I included it)
"Road to Moscow" by Al Stewart (trust me)
-
"Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin (Invading Vikings!)
Negatory on the "Invading Vikings."
-
Not in my head. I can see the horned helmets and all in there.
-
Johnny Horton - Battle Of New Orleans

Getting to old to listen to that new stuff. Not my cup of tea.
-
Haven't heard tghe new Disturbed. Have to check that one out.
-
"Unknown Soldier" - The Doors
"Born In The USA" - Springsteen
"Hey Joe" - Jimi Hendrix
"Ball of Confusion" - The Temptations
"War Pigs" - Black Sabbath
"Fortunate Son" - CCR
"Bullet in your Head" - Rage Against the Machine
"Rooster" - Alice in Chains
99% of tunes out there are "Anti-War" tunes. All of the above.
Also, for the clarification of others.
"Immigrant Song" - It is about the Vikings, but merely sailing, not "fighting".
"Symphony of Destruction" - Not about "Nuclear War", it is about the overthrow and assassination of a leader.
-
"Sympathy for the Devil" by the Stones has a few war-related lines...
"War Pigs" by Black Sabbath.
Most anything by Dylan has some sort of reference to war in it, "Blowin in the wind" may be the biggest of them.
The list is very long...those are the first three to come to mind. I'll post some more later.
-
I'm talking songs about war, not really anti-war songs. Theres probably 50 times the ones that are anti-war protest songs than are songs actually about soldiers and battles.
I know theres a few of them in my list, but I figured they were ones that were more about the wars themselves or homages to the men who fought and died than about "war is bad, boohoo" whining. (except "War", which is just cool. Period.)

I like all the Dos Gringos songs; they're more light-hearted than others I see on your list (but honestly, I wasn't sure if I should post that or not, since I'm not sure if you're a teenager or adult, and most of their songs have very foul language).
-
Me? I'm 28 and I work in a prison. I'm betting the language is nothing worse than what I hear all day at work.
-
If you're into Power Metal, then 'Sabaton' is the perfect band! They about all wars, but mostly WWII.

I like that one as well. You'd think after all those years, though, that she'd figure out she needed a bra strap clasp to get those things off her shoulders when she's wearing the wife-beater shirts.

Great Big Sea - Recruiting sergeant
Iced Earth - The glorious burden ...entire album

greatest pro war song ever is Judas Priest "One Shot at Glory".
One Shot At Glory lyrics
(Glenn Tipton, Rob Halford & K.K. Downing)
Let me hear the battle cry
Calling on the wind
Let me see the banners fly
Before the storm begins
Let me feel the spirits soar
Destroy the enemy
Striking at the evil core
For all the world to see
This day will last forever
Deep in the hearts of men
Courage and victory
Remember, remember
One Shot At Glory
In the crossfire overhead
Fate stands before me
Words have all been said
One Shot At Glory
Driving hard and seeing red
Destiny calls me
One night of fire
One Shot At Glory
Fighting on with dignity
In life and death we deal
The power and the majesty
Amidst the blood and steel
I still hear the battle cry
The call goes on and on
I still see the banners fly
The battle's always won
FLOTSOM

LoL, I can't believe I forgot "Mr Custer", we sing that one at encampments. Most of the kids have never heard it before and think we made it up.
Custer had it coming.

Too dam long of a quote Banshee! You forgot to add one song into that list
Nonpoint "March of war"
I don't think Nicklback's new song shouldn't be in there, thats just about sex realy lol, maybe the All American Rejects song "Gives you Hell" but thats more of a relashionship song.
Rooster is probably the most named song in this list, along with Aces High and Metallica "One".
What every one forgot about, and one of my favorite songs from Led Zeppelin, is "No Quarter" now thats a good war song.
Oh, and Atreyu, "Becoming the Bull"
-
A big favorite from WWII.

Here's the lyrics to Col. Potter's shower song. Apparently there aren't any other words (I didn't look much, first few sites showed the same... just repeats). Also the link to a *M*A*S*H* song playlist below. Nice little site as well.
I love to go swimming with bow-legged women,
And swim between their legs,
Swim between their legs,
Swim between their legs...
