Title: What is it with this smoke?
Post by: Baine on October 01, 2001, 09:39:00 AM
Why is there such a big FR hit in smoke and clouds in AH? Other games I play create a hit, but not nearly as large as in AH, where my machine pretty much falls to its knees and begs for mercy.
My machine isn't the best  800 amd, 256 megs ram, Voodoo 3 16 mb card, but that should be good enough for a game that supposedly requires a P266.
My frame rates are 60-70 without smoke, 10-15 with it.
Maybe I'm whining, but the number of people who complain about the smoke would seem to indicate that something needs to be done.

That is a big true even with top of the line systems. The eyecandy of actual smoke and clouds doesn't compensate in any way the tremendous hit in performance.

Totally agree.  Changing view to look around in smoke is MURDER!  Even from the tower.

Time for an adjustment in smoke code, I agree.  Its been a constant thorn, and there must be a method which won't hit frames so hard.

Hop in a tank or an osty when there is any smoking structure and look towards it.. even on the best systems its a slideshow..

My system must be a lucky fluke. I haven't really noticed a smoke hit more than 3-4 times in the past 3 months, though I'm just going by look and feel and not a fps counter. Warping, jerking, shudder all seem relatively minor except in huge furballs over built-up areas, and not that often then. Could it be a network connection issue more than a graphics processing issue?

My system: P3 800E, 256mb SDRAM, Geforce256 32DDR (the Geforece "1") with a cable modem.
