Title: AH not recognizing my ram?
Post by: Delirium on January 08, 2009, 08:50:00 AM
I recently put in 3 gigs of ram into my machine, MB recognizes it, XP recognizes, but AH doesn't via the control panel in the game. It tells me I still have 2 gig and 0 memory used.

Anyone know of a fix?

Applications are limited to 2GB of RAM by Windows.  I believe it is a registry setting, but it has been a long time since I dinked around with that.

Okay, why is it showing 0 memory used and why can't I preload stuff to my ram?

That is just how Windows returns the information.

You should be able to preload textures to system RAM, but if the free RAM is being returned is 0, then you will not be able to.  That is how your system is returning the information.  We have no control over that.

I know quite a few people have more ram that 3 gig, am I the only one with this issue?

All 32-bit programs are allowed a max of 2gb.

If you have 3gb, then other programs can run in the background and AH can fully utilize the 2gb, if you preload textures and skins.

How do you set it up, Kermit?

My system refuses to pre-load the textures when I have 3gig or more in my system.

edit: my system refused to preload textures or state whatever ram it is using within AH when I had 3 gig. My machine was jerky as heck with 3 gigs, when I dropped it to two 1 gig simms, it got a heckuvalot smoother.

When you open Aces High.
Before choosing "online"
select "video settings".

You should have the option to place a check in the boxes next to
preload textures
preload skins

Does the game not let you choose these option?
I sure hope so.  :)

It does have the option (and I have it checked) but the pre-load does not occur when I enter the arenas. When I enter the arenas, my ram is cap'd at 2k (understandable) and mem used is 0.

I was just curious if other people that have 3 gig or more also have the same 2gig and 0 mem used, or even if they preload textures at all.

Heck, it is very possible it is trouble with my system, I ended up taking out 1 of the simms for 2 gig and even stuff not AH related seems to be running smoother. The main reason I posted was to garner more information. I didn't intend to say it was a fault in the programming for AH, or anything else of the kind.

In retrospect, AH may of been uploading the textures but I didn't see it, probably because I was operating on no sleep for almost a 32 hour stretch.

Let me screw with it today/this evening and see if I verify.

Skuzzy, Kermit, et al, will the 3gig switch in the boot.ini address the 32 bit 2 gig limitation?

Just got 4G ram. System reports 2G available total. Usage is now down around 300-600Megs and used to be about 1.7 when I had 2G ram. I also pre-load all textures and am satisifed this is happening at first load of game.

If I quit the game and come back, the textures are already in memory and I enter arena instantly.

Delirium, I do not know the answer.

I had this same problem back in March 2007.

I have 2GB and I'm able to preload textures and preload skins.

33vortex also had same problem.

No solution posted.

 :(

Edit:

Also GixxerJr had same problem.

I have 4 gigs of ram on an XP machine, so it only recognizes 3 gig. In the game it shows I have 2 gigs or ram and I pre-load textures only.

Should I preload textures?

Wait, when you had 3 GB of RAM in your system, were you using 3 sticks of RAM or only 2? If you were using 3 sticks, that might be your problem. From what I've been told you can only have even amounts of RAM in your system (1 is the exception). So that would mean you either use 1, 2, 4, or 6 sticks of RAM.

That might have been why your system was jerky with 3 gigs.

I think that is the case if you want to take advantage of dual channel ram, but I may be wrong.

As they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing and I am proof positive.

Well, you could always buy yourself a single 2GB stick, then you can use one of your 1GB sticks and have a total of 3GB.

Del.....denholm asked a good question. Are you filling 3 slots out of 4 with memory? Dual channel?

The slots are matched....and when you place memory in the system on some PCs you just can't fill the slots.

You have to place the ram in the proper slot. I'm using 4meg of ram DDR2.

In some or most of the machines in filling two slots they go in alternate slots.  1 and 3 for example.

Some machines won't use 3 slots out of the 4....the 3rd stick of ram will foul the system.

I'm using 4 gig....all 4 slots filled and everything works fine.

I reload all textures and skins into cache with no problems at all.

this might explain your 3 gig problem.

Some motherboards can support uneven amounts of memory in Dual channel, so the only way to tell is by knowing your motherboard model number.
So post the model of your motherboard for further help.

Deli, you are still talking about preloading TWO items?  Preloading TEXTURES and preloading SKINS right?

Hajo, when you press CONTROL + I, what does AH report for USED SYSTEM MEMORY?
